Former Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) is seriously mulling a rematch against the man who defeated him in 2006, two-term Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.). The Allentown Morning Call reported Friday that a source close to Fitzpatrick said he was poised to get in the race by the end of the month. Murphy defeated the then-freshman Fitzpatrick by a slim 1,518-vote margin 2006. CQ Politics currently rates this general election contest as Safe Democratic.

Dear ------, Today, President Bush announced his choice to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as the next Supreme Court Justice: Harriet Miers. Ms. Miers is the third woman to be nominated for the Supreme Court, and like Justice O'Connor is a legal trailblazer. Ms. Miers is an extremely well-qualified and fair-minded individual who is committed to interpreting the law instead of legislating from the bench. President Bush selected Ms. Miers after embarking on a thorough and deliberate thought process. This confirmation however promises to be much more contentious than the confirmation of Judge John Roberts. Before Ms. Miers was even...

There is a certain cockiness (what do they call that in Texas?) beginning to creep into some corners of the Bush camp as the president's campaign suddenly has the Big Mo (Big Mo as in Momentum, Big Mo as in Missouri). The president was gaining rapidly in August, took a slight lead just before the opening of the Republican National Convention, and is now beginning to pull away from John Kerry in battleground states like Missouri and Ohio. Even New Jersey, where John Kerry once had a 20-point lead, is witnessing a Bush surge. According to a poll by the...

Sorry in advance to anyone who's upset by this "vanity" post. (Is that what this is called? Because I've never done one of these.) Anyway... Is it just me, or are we hearing next to NOTHING about how this convention is being received by the folks in flyover country? I seem to recall, at conventions past, that every morning brought new polls and analysis. Should I assume that this information is out there -- but it's being stifled because it reflects positively in George W's favor? Anyone have any thoughts?

A Sad Day for Artistic Freedom ...Barbra Streisand Posted on November 4, 2003 I am deeply disappointed that CBS, the network that in 1964 gave me complete artistic control in creating television specials, now caved in to right wing Republican pressure to cancel the network broadcast of the movie The Reagans. (And I say MOVIE - because this is NOT a documentary - it's a television drama.) The movie will now be aired on Showtime, where the difference in viewership is in the millions. One can only imagine the kind of pressure that would compel CBS to take such an...

I apologize if this has already been posted... or if I'm posting this on the wrong board... but I thought it was worth spotlighting. Tonight I was poking around on Barbra Streisand's webpage (I know, I know... no rebukes please!) and I found the following: "Vote No on Recall ...Barbra Streisand Posted on October 3, 2003 Regardless of what you think about GREY Davis, we should all be able to agree that we must now stop this attempted hijacking of the democratic process." Ummm... hello, Babs? The soon-to-be ex-governor's first name is spelled GRAY! You'd think this ninny would've learned...

Republican first-term Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, whose Illinois seat is considered key to the GOP's chances to maintain its majority in the Senate in 2004, will not seek re-election, state Republicans said Tuesday. Fitzgerald called close supporters Monday night to inform them of his decision, said a source close to the lawmaker who spoke only on condition of anonymity. The source, who was among those called by Fitzgerald, said the senator was to announce his decision Tuesday afternoon. Neither Fitzgerald nor his aides returned repeated phone calls Tuesday. Aides at his Washington office declined to comment. State Sen. Dave Syverson, treasurer...

Rep. Sue Myrick (R) took herself out of contention for the 2004 race against Sen. John Edwards (D) on Tuesday. "I learned a long time ago never say never in this business, but honestly, my concentration is on what the people elected me to do right now," Myrick told a local television station. Myrick has held the Charlotte-based 9th district since 1994. She ran for the Senate in 1992, losing the primary to Lauch Faircloth, who went on to win the seat. In a poll conducted in mid-October by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Myrick ran strongest against Edwards. Edwards led...

Cheney starts GOP parade BATON ROUGE - Vice President Dick Cheney is leading the parade for Republican Suzanne Haik Terrell, whose pollster said she is now leading the U.S. Senate race runoff campaign. Terrell said Monday the White House had confirmed Cheney would campaign for her Monday at stops in Monroe and Lafayette, two key areas for her runoff campaign against Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. Other national Republican figures expected to come to Louisiana to campaign for and with Terrell include President George W. Bush, whose schedulers must work around the president's European trip planned for next week. "It...

Outgoing Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy defended his handling of the Committee this week in a statement. "During these 15 months, we joined forces with the House Judiciary Committee to enact the first new charter for the Justice Department in two decades, and we launched the first comprehensive oversight of the FBI in just as long. We enacted new anti-terrorism laws, and I hope our close oversight of these laws, and of the FBI, will continue," said Leahy in a statement. President Bush and the Republicans had been accusing Senate Democrats of unfairly blocking his judicial nominations for months,...

Claiming that a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll this week has unfairly influenced the campaign for governor, an Independence Party leader has filed a complaint against the newspaper with the Minnesota News Council. Following a one-day poll conducted Monday, the newspaper reported on Wednesday that IP gubernatorial nominee Tim Penny had fallen well behind Republican Tim Pawlenty and DFLer Roger Moe. Peter Tharaldson, IP chairman for the Fifth Congressional District, said Friday that the poll should not have been conducted at a time when all campaigns were shut down during the period of mourning for U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone. "This haste...

Johnson versus Thune, Daschle versus Bush, Democrat versus Republican control of the United States Senate; there are several reasons why the country's watching South Dakota voters. To no one's surprise, this race is still too close to call, it's within the tight margin of error. However, in our latest scientific poll Johnson is maintaining a slight edge. It's crunch time. With just three days until the election, both Tim Johnson and John Thune are vying for more votes. Each handshake could be the difference, that's how close the race for South Dakota's Senate seat is. According to the KELOLAND News...

The president's rally has a very real political purpose. But today, some bipartisan supporters held a rally of their own to show they support the Republican president and Democrat Tim Johnson for Senate. John Thune's campaign hopes tomorrow's rally will convince Bush supporters to also be Thune supporters. But, not everyone who likes the President plans to vote for Thune. Some registered Republicans who plan to vote for Tim Johnson held a rally in Aberdeen today. Registered Republican Tom Aman thinks highly of the commander and chief. He voted for him in 2000, and has contributed to every one of...
