Rolls-Royce isn't limiting its robotic transportation plans to luxury cars. The British transportation firm has outlined a strategy for deploying remote-controlled and autonomous cargo vessels. It's working on virtual decks where land-based crews could control every aspect of a ship, complete with VR camera views and monitoring drones to spot issues that no human ever could. Accordingly, Rolls is designing boats where humans wouldn't have to come aboard. In theory, one human would steer several boats -- crew shortages would disappear overnight. The move to crew-free ships promises more than a few advantages, Rolls says. You wouldn't need a bridge...

I carried a 1911 then an M9 in the service. Carried a 1911 commander for a while as a civilian but as I got older and attire for work changed, I switched to a subcompact 9mm. Last year, the world started feeling more dangerous and I upgraded to a 10mm double stack pistol, bag carry. But in a world where the bad guys show up with rifles and today with rifles, armor and bombs, any pistol seem pretty anemic. I'm curious what other freepers carry or are thinking about self defense in the world that Zero has given us.

So what do you get when an airman and weekend warrior go on vacation? Spencer lets go. I am so proud of these two service members I could burst. These aren't special ops guys, they are your neighbor's son or the buddy that can't make the game this weekend because he has guard duty. They are the day to day Americans that the media never notices. Spencer lets go, is a picture of what normal American citizens can do if they choose to take responsibility for the world around them, even when that world has suddenly turned very dark and...
  • U.S. Military Makes Monumental Shift To Hollowpoint Pistol Ammunition

In a significant doctrinal shift, the U.S. military is relegating full metal jacketed (FMJ) pistol bullets to a training role, and will be adopting modern hollowpoint designs similar to those used by most domestic law enforcement agencies and citizens who carry handguns for self-defense. The stunning announcement was made at the U.S Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey yesterday during the military’s two-day “industry day” for the Modular Handgun System (MHS), which will conclude today. A military lawyer who made a presentation during the Industry Day noted that the United States is not a signatory to the Hague Conventions which...

Shot the Glock 20 today. It will be carried as a trail gun for mountain use. I was amazed by the lack of kick. Even the Buffalo Bore was very controllable but kicked the brass out about twice as far. Over 700 lbs. of muzzle energy and perceived recoil was less that some 9's I've fired. Anybody else carrying a 10mm on the trail?

Is iOS spying on you for Apple? According to forensic scientist Jonathan Zdziarski, quite possibly: Several undocumented services run regularly in the background on over 600 million iOS devices, which could be sending data to Apple. At a recent talk at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference in New York, Zdziarski identified “a number of undocumented high-value forensic services running on every iOS designs” and “suspicious design omissions in iOS that make collection easier.” What does that mean? In short, Zdziarski showed that these services could be used to take forensic artifacts off an iPhone or iPad that should never...

Inspired by Apple CEO Tim Cook, Virgin founder Richard Branson has taken to his blog to say that businesses should begin standing up against climate change deniers. "While Tim told sustainability skeptics to 'get out of our stock,'" Branson writes, "I would urge climate change deniers to get out of our way." Cook's statements came at a recent shareholders meeting, where he soundly shot down a proposal rooted in climate change denial that would have had Apple putting its bottom line above its interests in sustainability. Cook said that those who would prefer Apple do everything purely for profit simply...

Even airport TSA agents don't really believe they're making much of a difference. Or so suggests Jason Harrington, a former Transportation Security Administration employee who's written a revealing piece for Politico on what it's like to work for the agency on the ground floor. Harrington writes that many of his coworkers found their orders questionable, from selecting people for enhanced screenings based on their nationality to the broad use of full-body scanners. Harrington also writes that he hated that the job made him pat down children and the elderly and confiscate everything from nail clippers to homemade jellies under the...
  • US police deploy 3D scanner to capture accidents and crime scenes (video)

Once was one of the coolest gadgets on CSI, but now one New Mexico police department has it. The Roswell Police Department has recently acquired a Faro 3D scanner which will be utilized in major accidents and crime scenes. The 3D scanner utilizes a laser which "captures" information. Once the information is downloaded into the computer, the software creates a 3D image, which essentially allows officers to "fly" through scenes, said Roswell Police Detective Scott Stevenson. All police have to do is turn the scanner on, put in the distance they want to scan and technology does the rest. After...

HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HP’s website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsoft’s touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

  • US federal judge rules Apple conspired to raise e-book prices

Following a non-jury trial that ended on June 20th, US District Judge Denise Cote has ruled that Apple conspired to raise the retail prices of e-books, according to a Reuters report published this morning. Apple has been at the focus of the Manhattan-based antitrust trial, which began last month, with publishers Macmillan and Penguin Group named as co-defendants. The violation here centered on Apple's agency pricing model, in which publishers set the price of each book and give sellers a 30 percent cut, rather than a traditional wholesale model in which retailers set the pricing at their own stores. Eddy...
