U.S. officials are in discussions to temporarily shelter unaccompanied immigrant children on the campus of shuttered Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville. Faced with a surge in the numbers of minors arriving on their own from Central America, representatives of the federal Department of Health and Human Services visited the campus this week and are nearing an agreement to use Saint Paul’s facilities for at least six months, sources in Brunswick County said.

Despite a recent strongly worded clarification from Rome, confusion is continuing to be stirred up over the Catholic Church’s practice of refusing Communion to those who are divorced and remarried. A prominent curial cardinal, and favorite of Pope Francis, has defied the Vatican’s doctrinal office, saying that he expects a change. Cardinal Walter Kasper has said bluntly, and in direct opposition to the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), that the rules will shortly be changed to allow divorced and remarried Catholics to be admitted to Holy Communion.

When we first meet Karen, star of a new Channel 4 documentary, she is driving a huge, silver Nissan people-carrier. The 54-year-old grandmother is smartly dressed in fashionable clothes, jewellery and sports an immaculate manicure. But neither her car nor her clothes are paid for by her wages. Instead, Karen is among the 20 million people claiming benefits in Britain. ... Now, a Channel 4 series, Benefits Britain 1949, explores exactly that question by challenging claimants — including Karen — to live on what they would have received when the welfare state was born.

An ongoing Justice Department investigation into Henrico County's denial of a Muslim mosque three years ago was weighing on county planners and supervisors when they reversed course and approved the mosque this summer. Federal documents released Tuesday, which announced a settlement of allegations that the county had violated federal law in rejecting the mosque in 2008, show that Planning Commission members and supervisors as well as staffers had been interviewed by Justice Department investigators months before backers of the mosque submitted a new application.
