Police yesterday were searching for multiple suspects who fled the scene of a fatal predawn shooting at the Holiday Inn Express in Dorchester. Police responded to the hotel, located just steps from Interstate 93 South, at 4:15 a.m. yesterday after receiving a call that someone had been shot. When they arrived, they found a man in his mid-20s in a fifth-floor room suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts’ lone Confederate memorial will be removed after Columbus Day weekend. The Boston Globe reports that the memorial will be removed from Georges Island and temporarily placed in storage at the Massachusetts Archives. Thirteen Confederate soldiers who died while imprisoned at Fort Warren during the Civil War are commemorated on the headstone.

WASHINGTON — On the first crisp fall day in Washington, thousands of anti-racism marchers proved that the capital’s summer of protests had not yet come to a close. Two separate rallies — the March for Racial Justice and the March for Black Women — converged in Lincoln Park, a picnic-and-birthday-party plot nestled in the heart of the gentrified eastern part of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The stepfather of a teenage boy who was stabbed to death in high school after allegedly harassing a 'flamboyant' fellow student has said his stepson was no bully. Kyle Victor, 34, said 15-year-old Matthew McCree was 'in no way bad'. McCree was allegedly stabbed in the chest by 18-year-old classmate Abel Cedeno at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in New York City on Wednesday.

Baseball's popularity in Latin America has swelled the number of Spanish-speaking players to nearly 30 percent, MLB statistics show. That's a far cry from the post-World War II era when only 1 percent of players primarily spoke Spanish, according to the Society for American Baseball Research. By the late 1990s, the language barrier had become such a problem that MLB started offering classes in English as a second language in 1997, with the teams' covering the costs. Former NFL player Albert Haynesworth accused his ex-girlfriend, former basketball player Brittany Jackson, of repeatedly physically abusing him and calling him racial slurs in a string of tweets today. TMZ reported that Haynesworth tweeted in response to Jackson’s accusations that he wasn’t paying child support for their son, although TMZ doesn’t say where those accusations came from—none of Jackson’s social media accounts made any reference to that as of Wednesday night, and TMZ doesn’t refer to any court records. Haynesworth labeled his tweets “The Ugly Truth about Brittany”:

A oup of teachers and Florida's teacher union are going to court to stop the state's "Best and Brightest" teacher bonus program. The Florida Education Association and seven teachers filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against the Florida Department of Education and the state's school districts. The lawsuit alleges that the bonus program discriminates against older teachers, as well as black and Hispanic teachers.

UPDATE, 1 a.m., Sept. 14: The protest group member who spoke to CSNNE said Antifa Boston's claim of responsibility for hanging the banner at Fenway Park is "ridiculous." "The five of us are in no way associated with Antifa nor did Antifa Boston have anything to do with the action," the group member wrote via text. As proof, they provided an image of the banner when it was being unfurled ahead of the demonstration, as a test.
