NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A woman is in critical condition after she fell down an elevator shaft on board the USS Kearsage. The Navy says the incident happened Thursday around 11 a.m., when the sailor was working near the shaft and somehow fell down several decks.

A North Carolina country club turned into a fight club early Sunday morning after a brawl broke out that left one person dead and several others seriously injured. Deputies responded to the Lakewood Country Club, near Salemburg, N.C., about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving multiple calls reporting gunshots and a fight at the clubhouse, according to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office. “Responding deputies discovered several groups fighting upon their arrival and attempted to break up the fights,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

CHICAGO -- New statistics out Friday show there is an average of 10 shootings in Chicago a day. There were 355 shootings and 429 shooting victims in June. There were also 72 murders last month, up from 46 in June of 2015. At the halfway point for the year, homicides citywide have jumped 49 percent, hitting levels unseen since the late 1990s. Through June 19, Chicago had more homicide than New York City or Los Angeles combined. Chicago police are blaming repeat offenders with illegal guns and ties to gangs. A New Hampshire woman was arrested and charged with assault after police say she attacked a bank manager with a hole punch on Thursday. Leanne E. Yerian, 35, of Salem, allegedly attacked a Bank of America manager just after 4 p.m. when the manager refused to cash a check for her. Yerian picked up a metal hole punch from the desk and hit the manager on the head, according to the Salem Police Department. “The woman then jumped on the manager, pulled her hair, and slammed her up against the wall,” said police.

A man shot and killed his wife and three children at two north valley locations before turning the gun on himself Wednesday night, according to Metro Police. The man shot his wife at a Walgreens back parking lot, at Lake Mead and Jones boulevards, Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said. The woman, Phoukeo Dej-Oudom, 35, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including one in the head. His body, along with those of his children — Anhurak Jason Dej-Oudom, 9, Xonajuk J.J. Dej-Oudom, 14, and Dalavanh Ariel Dej-Oudom, 15 — were found in a nearby apartment. They all suffered gunshot wounds, McGrath said.

WORCESTER — A grandmother and her 5-year-old granddaughter were seriously injured Wednesday, police said, when an SUV driver chasing a truck outside St. Vincent Hospital lost control and struck the two on the sidewalk. The woman, identified as Cassandra M. McAuliffe, 33, of Channing Street, Worcester, was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. She was arrested at the hospital and charged with domestic assault and battery; two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a motor vehicle; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under the age of 14; reckless driving;...

With Congress lined up for a battle over whether women should be required to register for the draft, there’s one group that is solidly against the idea, a new poll suggests: women themselves. Women are much less likely than men to say women should be required to register for Selective Service when they turn 18, according to a poll conducted earlier this month by The Economist/YouGov. Thirty-nine percent of women supported registration for women, compared to 61 percent of men.

In early June, distraught over a shooting inside his home that left two children with gunshot wounds and a third child dead, Tremelle Raymond Sr. vowed he was moving out of Liberty City. He did. It didn’t matter. Early Tuesday morning, his fourth child, 16-year-old Jemelle Raymond was shot dead inside a car in a quiet Miami Gardens residential neighborhood. Also killed was 18-year-old Dre’quan Burnett. A third person, Rodney Goree, 20, was shot but is expected to survive.

A Milwaukee woman is on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list, and a reward of up to $100,000 has been offered for information that leads to her arrest and conviction. Shanika Minor is wanted in the shooting deaths of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. According to a criminal complaint, . Minor is the seventh person from Wisconsin and the first from Milwaukee to make the list. She is only the 10th female to appear on the list since its creation in in March 1950, FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Shields said.

DENVER, June 28 (UPI) -- Hillary Clinton pledged Tuesday she would bring "affordable" broadband Internet access to all U.S. homes by 2020 as part of a series of proposals to increase web access and bolster the tech sector of the economy. Presently, the Federal Communications Commission reports 10 percent of Americans, roughly 34 million people, do not have access to broadband Internet. The vast majority of them are people living in rural areas, where tech companies have declined to install the infrastructure necessary to bring high-speed Internet to a small number customers due to the cost.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A former college student who gave birth in her sorority house was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole for killing the newborn by throwing her in the trash. Emile Weaver, 21, was found guilty by a jury last month of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities are searching for a woman who was caught stealing from a home while clad in a bikini. Surveillance video showed the woman, who wore a yellow bikini bottom and a green bikini top, entered a locked property in the 28000 block of West Avenue in Lancaster Saturday and “took items,” according to Shirley Miller of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Later that day, the same woman took valuable items from an unlocked residence home in the 47000 block of Three Points Road in Lake Hughes, Miller said.

In a TV spot debuting today, Seth Rogen says "women don't get paid as much as men and that is wrong." Before the violence erupted Thursday afternoon, Jones and Hampton moved several times to different train cars, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Bob Groebner said in court. At one point, Groebner said, the two were sitting facing each other across the aisle and he asked her: "Are you going to have my baby?" Hampton shook her head no and he got up and began repeatedly stabbing her until she fell to the floor, authorities allege. He then dragged her body and slashed her neck several times, authorities say.

CHICAGO -- 28-year-old Antonio Perkins was hanging out with friends he hadn’t seen in a while Wednesday night in North Lawndale. Two of his three young children joined him to enjoy the warm weather. The sun was just setting around 8:45 p.m. as Tony recorded himself and his friends on Facebook Live. He wasn’t saying much. Then, a sudden blast of gunfire. Tony fell on the grass after two shots. A flurry of up to ten shots followed. He was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m. from gunshot wounds to his head and neck.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 has learned a state worker was arrested for kissing a patient at a center for mentally ill teen criminals. Investigators found that state worker, Amber Lucero, 35, was having an ongoing relationship with Nehemiah Griego, 19, who murdered his parents and three of his siblings. Lucero is a psych tech the Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center, an in-patient facility for boys 13 to 17-years-old. Her job is to make sure teens are following their treatment and doing what they’re supposed to do, but police say she was busy falling in love with a teen...
