Well, I uses to think of myself as a libertarian but I do not anymore. That said, I have to agree that arguing from libertarian principles; if it ethical for an individual to put up cameras to surveil his property it is ethical for that property owner to delegate that power to someone else. Just because that someone else is the State does not invalidate the original individual right to delegate a just power. However, I think there is something -- well, sick -- about a culture that tolerates this kind of thing.

I feel so much better now that Goldberg's Ministry of Truth's has stamped out the pernicious notion that there is an American Big Brother. Isn't it nice knowing that the freedoms of Americans (and the British, too) are more secure than ever? I know I will sleep better knowing our glorious government is monitoring our lives for the noblest of ends.

Now that a Republican is in charge, gun control doesn't matter so much to conservatives any more.

Bush and Ashcroft have both already refused to support "national ID cards."

Bush has, Ashcroft has not. In October, Ashcroft had a meeting with Larry Ellison to discuss the possibility. To date he has refused any comment on the subject except to say nothing is off the table. Nor have Bush or Ashcroft done anything to thwart the standardizing of drivers licenses to federal standards. A measure that its supporters frankly admit is to make the drivers license a better ID card.

This isn't about gun control.

Yes it is. It is about getting pro-gun people to buy into even more restrictions on gun sales. The best and probably only way to be sure foreigners are not buying guns in the US is to control private sales as well as gun store sales. Also permanent records will have to be kept so the FBI can track any possible gun sales to foreigners.

I'll bet Sarah Brady is having an orgasm over this new rule. She has been pushing the terrorist 'connection' since September.

This will require even more strict background checking, too. Gotta have that National ID to make sure you're a citizen, citizen.

Usama bin Laden was/is a figurehead. He was never a real leader but merely a convenient figure for Americans to focus their hatred on while the real work of terrorism goes on elsewhere. It is classic misdirection. These guys have done their homework and they understand Americans a whole lot better than Americans understand them.

What was done was completely acceptable.

Very good. It is essential to the goal of a Socialist America that government at some level have the power to ban inappropriate political speech and to suppress displays of support for officially banned behaviors.
