Officials said the victim, from Guilford County, died after developing primary amebic meningoencephalitis, an illness caused by an amoeba that is naturally present in warm freshwater during the summer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that the individual’s illness was caused by Naegleria fowleri, which is an amoeba (one-celled living organism) commonly found in warm freshwater. The amoeba does not cause illness if swallowed but can be fatal if forced up the nose. Infections usually occur when it is hot for prolonged periods of time, which results in higher water temperatures and lower water levels.

Two former St. John the Baptist Parish utilities workers were convicted Tuesday of lying about collecting and recording water samples at a site where a potentially deadly brain-eating amoeba was found in the water system, the state Attorney General's office announced Tuesday (May 12). However, former inspector Kevin Branch, 55, of LaPlace and Danielle Roussel, 43, of Paulina will avoid jail after accepting a plea agreement to a lesser charge that includes a suspended one-year sentence in parish jail, six months probation and a $400 fine. According to the news release, both pleaded guilty before 40th Judicial District Judge Sterling...

A horde of decaying zombies invaded San Francisco's downtown Apple store on Friday evening, hunting for brains, terrifying the customers, and gnawing on iMacs. Zombie gnaws on iMac but prefers human brains (Credit: Declan McCullagh) I've placed some photos here. I'm pleased to report that the zombies ultimately decided human brains were tastier than plastic iMacs, although it wasn't for lack of effort in trying to vary what must be a monotonous diet. It was difficult to judge the exact number of zombies that shuffled through the city's shopping district, losing limbs, blood, and unmentionable body parts along the way,...
