SAN ANTONIO — One of the great upsides to a national book tour is the chance to break out of television's cocoon and interact directly with the American people. Don't get me wrong; I love what I do at Fox News. My "beat" is keeping company with soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen, Marines, special operators and others who protect us from harm. Though I live with these American heroes for weeks at a time overseas, I rarely have the opportunity to look their loved ones in the eye without visiting our wounded at a military hospital. A book tour completely alters...

A Fox News anchor abruptly ended an interview when the guest criticized the news network. Jon Scott was interviewing Thomas Ricks about his book, "The Generals" when Ricks accused Fox News of hyping up the recent attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi. According to the AP, Scott questioned Ricks as to why he would make such a claim when the attack resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Christopher Stevens - the first U.S. Ambassador assassinated in more than three decades. Ricks asserted the incident amounted to a "small firefight" and said, "I think that the emphasis on...

Although I understand why Cain supporters feel let down and disappointed, I don't understand those who are thowing up their hands, conceding the election to 0bama, and declaring the end of the Republic. Where was there any evidence that Cain had capabilty and experience to lead the Nation? Did he have years of fighting the good fight with the scars to prove it? No. Compare the battles Sarah Palin fought even before 2008. Since he is a radio commentator, was he a leading voice of conservative thought? No. If you want a radio host with a thorough understanding of the...

Herman Cain, the insurgent populist whose candidacy has been ensnared by allegations of sexual impropriety, said Saturday that he is leaving the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying that the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign." "As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said at an event in Atlanta. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not...
-
By suspending his campaign instead of quitting his campaign, Herman can still get federal matching funds in 2012. But the campaign is over. Even had it continued, it was over. I had thought and expected that Cain would continue until Iowa. He had enough money. Dropping out after losing in Iowa would have distracted from the present issues. Dropping out now will be viewed by a great many as an admission against interests that Herman Cain did have a 13 year affair.

Herman Cain has surged into the lead in several national polls of GOP primary voters, but he remains in second place in most polls of early voting states. That difference points to the challenge faced by Cain, who lacks the ground troops important in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, if he wants to turn his momentum into victories in early 2012. In the Iowa caucuses, Real Clear Politics's average of recent polls show Romney leading Cain 22 percent to 18 percent. Cain is further behind Romney in New Hampshire, where the former Massachusetts governor is a heavy favorite....

Herman Cain tested the national spotlight Sunday as the Republican presidential primary’s newest front-runner. Facing tough questions during a 25-minute one-on-one interview on NBC’s "Meet the Press," Cain acknowledged that his plan to simplify the tax code would raise taxes for “some” people and clarified his position that he doesn’t believe abortion should be an option in instances of rape and incest. Scrapping the current federal tax code — which he described as a “10-million-word mess” — would eliminate a host of invisible taxes and eventually reduce prices, Cain said. Some economists have pointed out that Cain’s plan would shift...
-
When pressed for answers today on Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq, the best Cain could do was to repeat his mantra that he would consult experts and then figure it out. Which is to say that he knows he hasn’t a clue but hopes no one will care. The program also produced Cain’s admission that he had no familiarity with the neoconservative movement. While being a subscriber to COMMENTARY isn’t a requirement for the presidency, the idea that someone running for that office had not even heard the term suggests that Cain is not only bereft of foreign policy experience, he...

Cain: Move ‘Occupy Wall Street’ to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue By Elizabeth Harrington October 7, 2011 (CNSNews.com) - Republican presidential nominee candidate Herman Cain called for the Occupy Wall Street protestors to relocate to the White House, in remarks he made Friday at the Family Research Council’s annual Values Voter Summit, in Washington, D.C. “When a reporter asked me the other day, well, what do you think about those demonstrations up on Wall Street, I said, first of all, Wall Street didn’t write these failed economic policies -- the White House did,” said Cain. He then added, “Why don’t you move...

Poll: Cain surges, opens up 20-point lead on RomneyBy Alexis Levinson - The Daily Caller 1 hr 9 mins ago In news sure to inject shock and awe into the Republican political primary season, a Zogby poll released Thursday showed Herman Cain leading the Republican field, topping former front-runner Mitt Romney by an astonishing 20 points. Cain would also narrowly edge out Obama in a general election, the poll found, by a 46“44 margin. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, would lose by a point to the president, 40 percent to 41 percent. Texas governor Rick Perry, who has slipped in...

Herman Cain, the man who has pulled even in the GOP presidential polls with Texas Gov. Rick Perry was in the governor’s backyard Thursday, signing books in College Station and The Woodlands and giving a speech in Houston. The former pizza executive has climbed from interesting also-ran to top-tier candidate in the last few weeks, buoyed by strong debate performances, a congenial public persona and conservative voters’ reluctance to give their heart to the long-running frontrunner, Mitt Romney. In the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, Cain is tied for second place with Perry with 17 percent of the vote. Romney...

Mr. Cain, a contender for the Republican presidential nomination, did all but one thing — campaign. Not in the traditional meet-the-public and kiss-the-babies sense, anyway. And according to his public campaign calendar of events, where 19 of the 31 days of October are blank, there will not be much glad-handing in the immediate future. That is just fine with Mr. Cain, a former business executive who has recently surged to the top tier of candidates in early polls. The latest Quinnipiac University poll, released Wednesday, found Mitt Romney and Mr. Cain essentially tied within the poll’s margin of sampling error....

CAIN: So we get to the fountain, my brother and I, and we look around, there wasn't a lot of people there and I said to my brother, "You go first." He tasted the white water and then we looked around and says, "Your turn." We tasted -- I taste the white water. Then we both taste the colored water and we looked at each other, six and seven years old, the water tastes the same. What's the big deal? We had not been taught segregation at the age of six and seven. We wondered what the big deal was...

*** Raising (and lowering) Cain: After his straw-poll win in Florida, Cain is getting a second look from conservative opinion-makers. The Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger has called Cain “a credible candidate” who “deserves a serious look,” while Michael Barone now labels him “a contender.” And over the weekend, Cain won another straw poll, this one sponsored by the National Federation of Republican Women. One reason why he’s resonating with conservatives is that he’s a non-politician with a business record (which might explain why Cain’s getting a second look but Rick Santorum isn’t). So Cain now has his moment, and...

Joe McGinniss complained to lefty blog Firedoglake yesterday that almost everyone is canceling interviews in which he was to have discussed his book, The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin: Terry Gross [of NPR's Fresh Air] has declined to have me on her show. Here he comes... Dick Cheney offers no regrets about his controversial role as one of America’s most influential vice presidents or his 40-year career. 'This is not an apology tour. The sign outside the ballroom was matter-of-fact: "Unsigned $20. Signed $15. No Haggling." That matter-of-fact sign was next to a matter-of-fact pile of books, which sat on a matter-of-fact folding table. And sitting behind it was a matter-of-fact man, whom you might walk right past without so much as a glance. That's too bad, because he could become the next President of the United States. The man was Michigan Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, and he was signing copies of his new book, "Seize Freedom! American Truths and Renewal in a Chaotic Age," outside the Conservative Principles Conference in Des Moines late...

PHOENIX - Sarah Palin kicks off her nationwide book signing tour in Phoenix this evening at 6 and dozens of her fans have been lined up for hours outside of Barnes & Noble at Desert Ridge. Dozens of people in lawn chairs bundled up and braved cold temperatures. That didn't stop 18-year-old Hayden Bradley from showing up at 1 a.m. "Definitely worth it." Greg Goulet from Portland and his son got in line at 4 a.m. to meet the former Alaska Governor and get a copy of "America By Heart." "It's still cold. I mean 45 is 45. It's worth...

Sarah Palin — accompanied at times by family members — later this month will launch a nine-day, 16-stop signing tour for her new book, “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag.” Among the destinations sure to get buzz: Des Moines and Spirit Lake, Iowa. Palin’s strategic schedule includes a stop in Tulsa, Okla., on “Black Friday” — the day after Thanksgiving — and then four more stops during that big shopping weekend. The tour has more of a heartland concentration than the 35-city tour for her memoir “Going Rogue” (the best-selling nonfiction book of 2009) and adds...

NEW YORK, N.Y. For her next book tour, Sarah Palin will again skip some of the nation's biggest cities. HarperCollins announced Wednesday that the former Republican vice-presidential candidate and Alaska governor will be on the road from Nov. 23 to Dec. 3, with a break for Thanksgiving, to promote "American by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag." The book comes out Nov. 23 and is her first since her memoir, "Going Rogue." As with "Going Rogue," Palin will not make appearances in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco or other cities where Democrats are more in favour....

We misunderestimated the date of his book release. Friends of former president George W. Bush said he pushed back the launch of his memoir "Decision Points" out of fear that the book could negatively affect the outcome of the midterm elections, the Financial Times reported. Initially Bush was going to launch the book in September, which is a better time from a sales perspective. Instead, the book will hit the shelves on Nov. 9, a week after Election Day, when the GOP is expected to make large gains. Unlike other officials from the Bush Administration, the former president himself has...

Former Alaska governor has earned roughly $12 million since stepping down from her job as Alaska governor at the end of July, according to a "conservative estimate" on the part of ABC News. Palin had been making $125,000 per year as Alaska's governor. The controversial 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee was reportedly paid $7 million for her book "Going Rogue," mostly after she stepped down. She is said to be getting $250,000 per episode for her television series on the Learning Channel and charge up to $100,000 deliver a speech, which she does regularly. ABC News writes that Palin's earnings...

Pundits can debate the political costs and benefits of Sarah Palin's decision to step down as Alaska governor, but the monetary advantages of leaving her $125,000-a-year public service post are beyond dispute. Since leaving office at the end of July 2009, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee has brought in at least 100 times her old salary – a haul now estimated at more than $12 million -- through television and book deals and a heavy schedule of speaking appearances worth five and six figures. That conservative estimate is based on publicly available records and news accounts. The actual number...

LA JOLLA — Protesters lined up in front of Warwick’s bookstore in La Jolla yesterday evening as Karl Rove, one-time senior adviser to former President George W. Only two people were allowed inside at a time.

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross. My guest, Karl Rove, was called the architect by President George W. Bush, the architect of Bush's successful reelection campaign. A critical bestselling book about Rove used the nickname "Bush's brain," and described Rove as the co-president. In the Washington Post, reporters Peter Baker and Michael Fletcher describe Rove as, quote, "the primary author of President Bush's two successful national campaigns and perhaps the most influential and controversial presidential strategist of his generation," unquote. Karl Rove ran George W. Bush's campaigns beginning with his run for governor of Texas. Rove served as senior...

Will Sarah Palin play in Peoria? Except for a brief stop in Chicago to tape an Oprah Winfrey show last November, Palin's first public appearance in Illinois will be April 17 in Washington, a town of about 14,000 near Peoria. The local community center -- called Five Points Washington -- booked Palin for a speech and a dinner to raise money for a parking lot, youth scholarships and other projects. The 1,000 tickets sold out in a day. With VIP receptions thrown in, the center's gross -- according to my calculations -- should be about $235,000, minus Palin's fee, which...

Critics of Michael Steele's tenure as Republican National Committee chairman are motivated by racism, Steele suggested in an interview published on Tuesday. Speaking to Washingtonian magazine (no online version), Steele wondered why his Democratic National Committee counterpart doesn't get the same criticism he does. "I don’t see stories about the internal operations of the DNC that I see about this operation," Steele said. "Why? Is it because Michael Steele is the chairman, or is it because a black man is chairman?”

Young said what he did was not morally right but he said that he had "responsibilities."

CNN spiked a hot story on Sunday. But if their plan was to keep a lid on a heated and unflattering Christiane Amanpour interview, it didn’t quite work out. Christiane Amanpour interviewed author Marc Thiessen about his hot new book, Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack last Wednesday, January 20. But Thiessen turned the tables on Amanpour and instead confronted her about her biased reporting. The show broadcast to CNN’s international audience, as planned. The piece was then to air in the large U.S. market Sunday. However, it appears...

She is persuasive, influential and does a lot of good, but Christians should be careful when Oprah speaks about spirituality, warned two apologists who recently co-authored a book on the subject. Excepting her bang-up performance at the Gridiron Dinner this month, Sarah Palin has an infamously fraught relationship with the media. On the one hand, frenzied coverage of her memoir ginned up sales. On the other hand, non-stop scrutiny of her clothing choices allegedly ruined a family vacation. There are costs to being constantly in the spotlight. Now she's taken some measures to control the message. Three Alaska bloggers who crossed Palin while she was governor have found themselves banned from attending her book signings. Jesse Gryphen, Dennis Zaki, and Shannyn Moore--plus an unknown fourth--are blacklisted at Palin events. Gryphen tells...
