Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Saturday he will request a Major Disaster Declaration for Broward County due to the catastrophic impacts of unprecedented flooding in Fort Lauderdale.

The announcement comes 10 days after heavy rainfall caused historic flooding that damaged countless homes and left residents reeling in the devastation.

DeSantis' request comes after Florida Democrats criticized his response time and claimed he went missing in action while people in Broward County suffered.

I know, federal disaster declarations can be requested up to 30 days from an event.

So, maybe desantis was busy doing stuff, like campaigning, and he forgot something happened in Ft Lauderdale?

What would you have him do? Not request federal disaster assistance for the flooding?

The problem for DeSantis is Trump broke the cozy system the elites had set.

In the time of Clinton and Bush it was accepted for a Governor to take an entire year off to campaign for president. Who cared if the little people back home suffered! Much more important was personal ambition.

It was just as accepted for their state’s taxpayers to fund all that travel.

DeSantis and his ilk desperately want to return America to that pre-Trump era where elites could do as they please.

Trump broke a lot of things, including himself and his administration.

I know, desantis was busy working on his stealth presidential run, and campaigning in ohio, virginia, and new hampshire...

So, why take time and ask for a pesky little thing like a federal disaster declaration right away, when he has more important things to do, right?

But he did it, so what are you complaining about?

“But he did it, so what are you complaining about?”

Exactly. Gotta give him credit for eventually getting around to doing his job.

Better late than never!

You're right... that's what desantis is thinking...

Why try to quickly get money and other federal aid to the people who were affected? They can wait till he gets around to it...

he's trying to raise millions in campaign donations!

All I know is it’s still a week and gas is scarce here.

I wish I had an electric car right now. Of course in addition to the 4x4 Jeep. Seriously, after the water recedes and nobody has gas an electric car would be handy now.

I see DeSantis as running his governorship as a guy already also running for POTUS. He reacts by sticking his finger in the air to see which way the wind blows. By not actually declaring, he can, and does, stay away from hot button issues like the war in Ukraine. We all saw what happened when he was confronted with that issue. He employed the flip flop, next time if he is asked he might employ the weasel words or the deflection strategy.

He appears to stay on topics we all agree on like tranny and grooming issues.

As Governor there in Florida, he has a legislature that gives him what he wants. That won’t be the case if he were to be POTUS.

Trump directly goads Desantis on purpose to get a rise out of him and he does get a rise from a PAC, not Ron who appears to hide behind the PAC.

Primary season is on the horizon. Don’t think the democrats aren’t already playing. Bobby Kennedy was making his speech after declaring and someone set off the fire alarm.

Re: "All I know is it's still a week and gas is scarce here."

First problem - severe flooding at Port Everglades, where almost all of the gasoline in Broward County is stored. The Port, obviously, is just 3-4 feet above sea level at high tide.

Second problem - panic buying.

Regardless - DeSantis needed to be on site in Broward County continuously until all utilities were restored, all roads were open, and all the people who got flooded out of their homes were securely housed elsewhere.

Politically, his failure to do that is incomprehensible.

My niece was caught trying to get through the flooding to get home. There was no where for the water to go. The ground was saturated.

Trump was simply the best president of the last 50 years.

He broke nothing except spoogies.

Yep, Ft Lauderdale wasn't the rodeo he's been in.

He's had experience with several hurricanes and other weather event so he knows the process to get federal aid.

There's no explaination for the delay in the request, other than he was too busy campaigning and didn't get around to doing it.

It’s inexcusable. Trump almost immediately went to East Palestine and he’s not even the president. What a contrast. DeSantis wants to go where the oligarchs tell him to.
