  • Why Are 2 Different Popes Telling Us to Read “Lord of the World”?

It’s a somewhat obscure apocalyptic novel, much overlooked since its publication in 1907, and yet it comes with a recommendation that just about any best-selling author would covet: the spiritual leader of the whole world says it’s a good read. And not just the current pope, the previous one too.Pope Francis raised eyebrows in 2013 and again in 2015 when he recommended Robert Hugh Benson’s Lord of the World to the faithful as a book that depicts a “globalization of hegemonic uniformity.” Similarly, then-Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, referred to the Universalism depicted in Lord of the...
  • Italy Bookshops Refuse to Stock Mafia Family Book

Bookshops across Italy are refusing to stock a new book written by the son of one of the country's most notorious Mafia bosses. Signs have appeared in store windows from Sicily to Milan advising customers that the book - called Riina Family Life - won't be found on the shelves and can't be ordered either. It's written by Giuseppe Salvatore Riina, whose father, Toto, is serving multiple life sentences for murder. On Wednesday, state broadcaster Rai provoked outrage by airing an interview with the younger Riina, himself a convicted mobster. The first sign was posted in the Sicilian city of...
  • Anyone Familiar Books of Dr. Anthony Napoleon?

I have been following Dr. Anthony Napoleon @Napoleonlegal on Twitter. He is a forensic psychologist and author of a few books, one of which I am currently reading called Shadow Men. It's a very interesting read about those who really have been pulling the strings throughout history. I was just curious if any other Freepers out there have stumbled upon him. His tweets are interesting and thought provoking. Maybe worth a "follow".

There has been a reoccurring thought- that POTUS would declare martial law if he saw his legacy about to go down the drain. So, I wrote a book along this line. Essentially, I believe that there would be a schism, with much of the south and midwest declaring their allegiance to the Constitution and resisting the Washington dictates. Some states would sit it out, others, like California, would support martial law. If interested, the book is out there on Amazon Unlimited. Those that have read it think it is a good read.

During a national emergency, a liberal Marxist-leaning political leadership takes absolute control of the United States. Martial law is declared and elections are suspended. This leadership morphs into a complete Communist-style government. All dissent is brutally repulsed. Two young university students, Peter Blake and Natalie Biriukova, become active leaders in the resistance movement. They soon fall in love. In time they are targeted by the government and forced to go on the run. A feared and notorious Compliance Officer, Nicholas Snoopczech, is hot on their trail. He is hated and feared by Americans, especially those who are brave enough to...

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. That may be true, but disregarding it entirely is equally as big of a mistake—especially when the cover has a dude rocking a windbreaker so fly that an Urban Outfitters employee would be jealous (see below). We’ve spent the last several weeks (yesterday afternoon), searching the labyrinth-like halls of the world’s most intricate libraries (Google) to create this list of mind-bending (somewhat entertaining) Christian book covers.A Potato That Wasn’t a Christian As the subtitle makes clear, this is actually serious business. Editor's note: This column was co-authored by Elizabeth Edwards Spalding. It is just as true today as it was more than a century ago when the philosopher George Santayana wrote: "Those who cannot learn from history are condemned to repeat it." That is why the history of the Cold War--the most protracted conflict of the 20th century--is critical to today's war on terrorism. Here are ten things to understand about the Cold War: 1. It was a war. The Cold War is sometimes referred to as World War III, which is apt. At its quietest moments, the Cold War was...

For almost a quarter of a century I have spent my days working with utopians. The utopian is motivated to create heaven on earth because he is convinced that there is no other option. Put simply, the utopian believes there can be no heaven in the sense that it is described in the Bible because there is no supernatural realm. This commitment to naturalism is a philosophical commitment. It isn't based on science. In fact, it flies in the face of science. To paraphrase Josh McDowell, we only have three options when it comes to the origin of the universe....

I have a new book out this week titled "You Will Be Made to Care." I chronicle the disturbing trend of persecution in the United States against people of faith. Several years ago, I had an encounter with a young man who told me in no uncertain terms that he did not care about the rapid movement to legalize same sex marriage in the United States. It did not affect him, would not affect him and he did not care about the issue at all. I replied to him that he would be made to care by the secular left...

Nearing the end of her long, arduous journey, she finds herself "without shoes or gloves, in the middle of the freezing icebound Finmark."When Gerda tries to run forward towards the Palace, an army of snowflakes arises in front of her. They grow larger and larger, and she...

Five Books that illustrate why America is Exceptional I just watched -In the Heart of the Sea- based on the book of the same name, and it started me thinking about just what kind of men it took to make America the greatest nation on earth. Here is my list of five non-fiction books that I have greatly enjoyed that tell of a time when men were MEN. I have placed them in chronological order of when the event began. 1799: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex By Nathaniel Philbrick. The Essex, stove by...

... I launched a book this week and I went Indie with it. Indie means I released it on Amazon via Kindle Direct Publishing. I had to. My Publisher, HarperVoyager, refused to publish it because of some of the ideas I wrote about in it. In other words, they were attempting to effectively ban a book because they felt the ideas and concepts I was writing about were dangerous and more importantly, not in keeping with their philosophical ideals. They felt my ideas weren't socially acceptable and were "guaranteed to lose fifty percent of my audience" as related back to...

This sounds like a great book - thought you guys might be interested. In The Devil’s Pleasure Palace, Walsh brings his substantial erudition to bear on his best nonfiction work so far, a tour de force about how the “new nihilists” of the so-called Frankfurt School and their philosophy of “Critical Theory – like Pandora’s Box – released a horde of demons into the American psyche.” Disguised as a utopian dream, it– like Satan, a key figure in the book – instead sowed “destruction, division, hatred, and calumny.” This is not a casual beach read. It’s not even your typical...

As we know from the stupendous BBC adaptation of Tolstoy's epic novel, War And Peace, the Russians are very good at war, not so pie-hot when it comes to peace. Military parades, manoeuvres and a good scrap are what they like best - and as Simon Sebag Montefiore says in this panoramic study, to Tsar Nicholas II, even World War I, in which Russia fielded more than 1.2 million men, was nothing more than 'a bracing national rite'.

Take a look back at some of the most popular TV programs of the mid-1960s -- "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Bewitched," even "The Beverly Hillbillies" -- and what do you see? Like today, middle-class Americans typically had washing machines and air-conditioning, telephones and cars. The Internet and video games were not yet invented. But life, over all, did not look that different. There were TVs and radios in most homes. Millions of people worked in downtown offices and lived in suburbs, connected by multilane highways. Americans' average life expectancy at birth was 70, only eight years less than it...

The author of the Game of Thrones series, George RR Martin, has confirmed he missed the last deadline that would have allowed the sixth novel in his fantasy series to be published before the next TV series begins. The failure to meet the 31 December deadline will mean the sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones series will appear on screen before its source material. Martin has been working closely with HBO writers and producers to help the series mirror the books, but the next season is due to start in early 2016 and Martin's sixth book, the Winds of...
