Ed Pierson was flying from Seattle to New Jersey in 2023, when he ended up boarding a plane he’d never wanted to fly on. The Seattle resident booked with Alaska Airlines last March, purposefully selecting a flight with a plane he was happy to board – essentially, anything but a Boeing 737 Max. “I got to the airport, checked again that it wasn’t the Max. I went through security, got coffee. I walked onto the plane – I thought, it’s kinda new,” Pierson told CNN. “Then I sat down and on the emergency card [in the seat pocket] it said...

Air Canada grounded a pilot after social media sleuths revealed he posted a string of anti-Semitic messages across his various accounts, which have since been deleted. The outrage comes in the aftermath of Hamas's brutal assault on Israel last weekend. First Officer Mostafa Ezzo, who is based out of Montreal, even posted a photo showing him in his uniform with a Palestinian flag. Ezzo piloted a B787 aircraft. 'We are aware of the unacceptable posts made by an Air Canada pilot. We are taking this matter very seriously, and he was taken out of service on Mon, Oct. 9. We...

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Friday it will require operators of Boeing 787s (BA.N) to take additional precautions when landing on wet or snowy runways at airports where new wireless services are deployed from next week. The FAA said 5G interference could prevent engine and braking systems from transitioning to landing mode, which could prevent an aircraft from stopping on the runway. On Jan. 7, the FAA disclosed the 50 U.S. airports that will have 5G buffer zones, including in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Detroit, Dallas, Philadelphia, Seattle...

US air safety bods call it 'potentially catastrophic' if reboot directive not implemented The US Federal Aviation Administration has ordered Boeing 787 operators to switch their aircraft off and on every 51 days to prevent what it called "several potentially catastrophic failure scenarios" – including the crashing of onboard network switches. The airworthiness directive, due to be enforced from later this month, orders airlines to power-cycle their B787s before the aircraft reaches the specified days of continuous power-on operation. The power cycling is needed to prevent stale data from populating the aircraft's systems, a problem that has occurred on different 787 systems...

Federal prosecutors have subpoenaed records from Boeing relating to the production of the 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina, where there have been allegations of shoddy work, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. The subpoena was issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the sources said. DOJ is also conducting a criminal investigation into the certification and design of the 737 MAX after two deadly crashes of that jetliner. The 787 subpoena significantly widens the scope of the DOJ’s scrutiny of safety issues at Boeing. The two sources who revealed the subpoena spoke on condition of anonymity because of...

About a year ago, a Boeing 747 operated by Delta Air Lines DAL, took off from Atlanta for a three-hour flight to Pinal Airpark, a boneyard for unwanted aircraft in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. The once celebrated giant of the sky, which had transformed international travel with its size and range, had flown its last flight for a U.S. airline. Delta has replaced its fleet of jumbo jets with Airbus A350s, one of a new breed of smaller, ultraefficient long-range airliners. Nearly every other airline in the world is doing a version of the same thing, replacing huge jets with smaller...

Norwegian is running direct, low-cost routes on a new Dreamliner plane between Gatwick, New York, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale. As with other budget flights, seat reservations, checked-in luggage and food will cost extra. The carrier suggests the flights will help spark competition between airlines—Ryanair and easyJet have both previously talked about going transatlantic—and perhaps even start a price war, but the launch has not been without hitch. Norwegian encountered fierce opposition in America over the proposition, with several US airlines, unions and the Airline Pilots Organization (ALPA) teaming up to run a media campaign over the last few months,...

A scale model of a Reaper drone rumbled down the runway and lifted into the gray Canadian sky, powered by a plastic propeller and a lithium-ion battery. When the tiny plane crashed back to earth a few seconds later, white smoke began rising from the wreckage. “Why is it on fire?” one of the hobbyists asked the other, moments before bright orange flames began shooting from the crash site. The weary reply, captured on video, was: “Battery.” Small, potent lithium-ion power packs have transformed the world of radio-controlled model aircraft, much as they have allowed smartphones to get thinner, power...

The Dreamliner, with passengers, has finally landed. United Airlines landed its inaugural domestic flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft Sunday morning at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, becoming the first U.S. carrier to fly the composite-plastic-fuselage aircraft. The twin-aisle plane, delayed more than three years by production problems at Boeing Co., was designed to be about 20% more fuel efficient and less costly to maintain than similar-size planes. Half the plane is made of strong and light composite materials, including the fuselage and wings, instead of metal. …

Boeing Co. said Wednesday that some kind of foreign debris probably caused the electrical fire aboard a test flight for one of its new 787s earlier this month. The company said is making "minor design changes" to the plane's power-distribution panels and is working on a plan to resume test flights of the much-delayed plane.

From a distance, it almost looked like one of my old plastic Airfix kits - smooth, flexible and light. And as it glided into view, zooming across the leaden skies, I realised I was almost as excited about this as I used to be about constructing miniature Harrier jets on the kitchen table. But jet engines have always made my heart race, and yesterday, in a windy field in Hampshire, was no exception.

EVERETT, Wash.—Boeing Co.'s long-delayed 787 Dreamliner made its first flight on Tuesday morning under cold, cloudy skies, marking a milestone for the company's marquee commercial jetliner program that is running more than two years behind schedule. The first Dreamliner test aircraft rolled down runway 34 Left at Paine Field at 10:28 a.m. and smoothly lifted off, heading northbound. Thousands of people, including hundreds of Boeing employees, plane enthusiasts and media, gathered at the airfield, which is also the site of Boeing's wide-body jet factory, where the Dreamliners are assembled.

Boeing set for first flight of 787 Photo 8:13am EST By Bill Rigby SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co is set to make the first test flight of its 787 Dreamliner on Tuesday, almost two and a half years after the new, fuel-efficient plane, which is key to the company's financial future, was supposed to leave the ground. The lightweight carbon and titanium plane, promising to save airlines million of dollars in fuel and maintenance costs, has been hampered by a shortage of bolts, faulty design and a two-month strike, and it still has a long way to go before it...

Dow Jones)--Boeing Co. on Wednesday announced it would build a second final assembly line for its troubled 787 Dreamliner jet in South Carolina, a move that spurns the powerful aircraft machinists' union that had been negotiating with Boeing to locate the work at the current factory near Seattle. Boeing has been laying the groundwork for a new factory in South Carolina for months and could begin construction at a facility it owns in North Charleston, S.C., as early as Nov. 2. The factory is expected to be operational by July 2011.

Discussions between the Machinists union and Boeing over the second 787 production line for Everett are effectively dead, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. Boeing now appears close to choosing Charleston, S.C., as the location of the second line. The person close to the negotiations said an announcement could come within days. Boeing management has turned down further talks over the potential 10-year no-strike agreement the company had sought, the person said. "The union wants to continue talking," said this source, who is not aligned with the union. "The Boeing Co. does not want to talk any further....

EVERETT, Washington (AP) — A fuselage section of Boeing Co.'s new 787 jet has passed a series of stress tests that had to be done before the plane can begin flight testing, the company said. The Chicago-based aircraft maker put a composite fuselage barrel through tests that simulated the most extreme conditions the airplane is expected to experience over its lifetime. Engineers also subjected the fuselage section to 150 percent of its so-called ''limit load,'' then pushed it to the point of destruction. Boeing, which assembles its commercial planes in the Seattle area, said the fuselage did not suffer as...

Piece by very large piece, Boeing's 787 is arriving at Boeing's Everett plant. The Large Cargo Freighter known as the Dreamlifter has delivered nearly all the major 787 sections. Final assembly of the first plane will begin soon, once the wings come from Japan and the rest of the fuselage arrives from South Carolina. The latest Dreamlifter shipment came early Friday morning. The modified 747-400 carried the forward fuselage manufactured in Wichita, Kan., and the two aft fuselage sections manufactured by Vought in South Carolina. The first 787 special delivery was April 24, when the Large Cargo Freighter arrived in...

With the first flight of The Boeing Co.'s 787 only about six months away, the new General Electric engine that will power the Dreamliner made its first flight Thursday -- on the wing of a 747. "The engine performed extremely well, and we look forward to gaining additional valuable information on the engine's capabilities from flight testing," Tom Brisken, general manager of the GEnx program, said in a statement. "Today's flight puts us another step closer to certification later this year on the GEnx-1B engine for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner." The engine is being tested on what's known as...
