A purported conversation captured on a YouTube video apparently shot in the immediate aftermath of the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown has a possible witness saying the unarmed 18-year-old charged at the officer who fired the shots that have led to more than a week of sometimes violent demonstrations in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced Monday morning that he would call in the National Guard to Ferguson after Sunday proved the worst night of violent clashes since the shooting of Michael Brown last week. The governor's executive order came just moments after Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said new security measures were under discussion but did not include bringing in National Guard troops. But Nixon, who declared a state of emergency in Ferguson Friday, said the move was necessitated by "the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from...

CNN Wolf Blitzer: Why Don’t Cops “Shoot to Wound?” By Robert Farago on August 17, 2014 “On Thursday, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer asked guest [lawyer] Jeffrey Toobin why police weren’t instructed to “shoot to injure,” instead of kill,” talkingpointsmemo.com reports. “Blitzer’s questions arose during a discussion on the unfurling conflict in Ferguson, Mo. over the fatal police shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. ‘They often shoot to kill,’ Blitzer said of police. ‘Why do they have to shoot to kill? Why can’t they shoot a warning shot in the air, scare someone off if they think they’re in danger. Why...

After a week of riots and looting in Ferguson, Missouri, Charles Ogletree, the Harvard Law professor who was President Barack Obama's mentor, predicted that this is just the beginning of more unrest. After police shot and killed Michael Brown last weekend, Ogletree said the problem is, "you have these white officers who don't live there, who aren't a part of the community, who don't know the community, and yet they're given all the power to make things happen." "We need to have a change in that sense right now," Ogletree said on Meet The Press. "And I'll tell you what,...

FERGUSON, Missouri (CNN) —The Ferguson, Missouri, police officer who killed Michael Brown says the teenager rushed at him full speed in the moments before the shooting, according to an account phoned into a St. Louis radio station and confirmed as accurate by a source with detailed knowledge of the investigation. According to the account on KTFK, phoned in by a woman who identified herself as "Josie," the altercation began after Officer Darren Wilson rolled down his window to tell Brown and a friend to stop walking in the street. When Wilson tried to get out of his cruiser, Brown first...

In Ferguson and many towns like it, majority African-American communities most grapple with mostly white county governments. How this leads to dysfunction, racial tension, and a skewed justice system. As we watch Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson bumble his way through press conferences, let’s take a couple steps back and think about how this two-thirds African-American town has retained such a nearly complete all-white power structure. It is partly, as Slate noted, a question of voting power, as whites are more entrenched and vote in greater numbers. But there’s a larger story here about race in America that involves the...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)Each day when the nightly violence in Ferguson, Missouri, subsides, Erma Dupree and other volunteers descend on the tense town's streets to sweep up the broken glass, shell casings and flung bottles. Dupree, 55, has been driving from her St. Louis home to Ferguson every day since last Monday. “I clean up the streets for about three hours during the day. I don’t want to be around that area at night because of the tear gas being fired at the riots,” Dupree said. “It was just horrific. There was more broken glass than I’ve ever seen in my life,” Dupree...

Bundy engaged in armed resistance to avoid paying fees. Compare that to peaceful protests responding to a lost life. Last Wednesday night, I had snarked on Twitter about the lack of so-called “Tea Party” “patriots” — like those brave boys and girls who, earlier this year, pointed their big assault-rifles at federal officials to protect the “right” of a scofflaw rancher in Nevada to illegally graze his cattle for free on land that he did not own — failing to show up to protect the actual rights and freedoms of so many being denied them by actual Big Government Tyranny...

Via Mediaite, maybe there’s more out there but this is just the second clip I’ve seen of the crime scene and the first that (allegedly) includes footage of Darren Wilson, the cop who fired the shots that killed Brown. That’s him on the right in the clip below according to the eyewitness, Piaget Crenshaw.Crenshaw’s account of what happened starts at around 3:00. She’s right in line with the other three eyewitnesses on Brown’s general movements: He ran from Wilson initially, Wilson fired at him, then Brown turned back to face him. Crenshaw thinks the shots fired at Brown while...

The Brown family legal team discussed the independent autopsy conducted on Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was shot by a Ferguson police officer over one week ago. The attorneys said that the autopsy report was consistent with eyewitness accounts that Brown was attempting to surrender, and that the back-to-front path of the two head shots should have led to the arrest of the officer. Attorney Daryl Parks said that the two head shots, one of which was considered not survivable, both entered from the top of Brown’s head and exited out the front, one through his forehead and one...

Nixon also said that a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew, which had been in place for two nights, would be lifted. Police and protesters clashed both nights, with looting, vandalism, an attempt to overthrow the law enforcement command center and law enforcement officers targeted by gunfire, the governor said.

The Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave "no heads up" to the White House before deploying The National Guard and has now made another abrupt decision as The National Guard closes in on Ferguson: *NIXON'S CALL TO HALT CURFEW TONIGHT MADE IN E-MAILED STATEMENT We presume when there are military tanks rolling through the streets of a town, there is no need for the actual implementation of a curfew... This once again rubs the administration's nose in it as AG Holder's comments from last week hang in the air: "get those damned tanks out of there." The neighborhood has been under...

At least two more people have been shot as more violence has erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, where there have been several days of rioting in response to a police shooting of a black teenager. Officials overnight said a police officer shot a man who pointed a handgun at him, and a woman apparently was shot in a drive-by shooting. At KTVI-TV in St. Louis, some of the details were emerging. The station reported it was about 1 a.m. when four men, masked and carrying shotguns, approached a crowd. The report said when police arrived they heard shots fired and saw...

A woman who says she witnessed the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown has released video to CNN that shows Brown lying in the street as officers stand by. The shooting has spawned a week of protests in which demonstrators have demanded an explanation for Brown's killing. Police in Ferguson, Mo., say officer Darren Wilson opened fire because Brown tried to take his gun during an altercation. Piaget Crenshaw said she has waited until now to release the video because she feared for her safety and was waiting for police to release Wilson's name, which they did Friday. She...

Via WaPo: Michael Brown was shot in the head and chest multiple times, according to Mary Case, the St. Louis County medical examiner. While Case declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation into Brown’s death, another person familiar with the county’s investigation told The Washington Post that Brown had between six and eight gunshot wounds and was shot from the front. In addition, Brown had marijuana in his system when he was shot and killed by a police officer on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, according to this person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing...
