The ruling came after secret negotiations Tuesday between Paul Denyer and prison officials in Australia's southern Victoria state. Denyer, 31, was convicted of stabbing and strangling three young women during a three-week killing spree in Melbourne in 1993. Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Former WorldCom Inc. Chief Financial Officer Scott Sullivan, who's accused of leading a multibilliondollar accounting fraud, says he should get no more than 12 1/2 years in prison if convicted, about half what's called for under U.S. guidelines. As part of its crackdown on corporate fraud, Congress in 2001 adjusted the guidelines to increase sentences for whitecollar criminals who plead guilty or are convicted at trial. As a result, Sullivan says he might receive as much as 24 1/2 years in prison if he's found guilty. Sullivan now wants a judge to rule that the guidelines...

And now here we are, at a shimmeringly historic moment where we cannot help but note the delicious irony, the divine karmic genius of it all.

When we cannot help but notice how millions of progressive love-minded Gay Pride folks across America, from S.F. to N.Y., from Atlanta to Seattle to Chicago, were actually cheering on the Supreme Court last week -- the same crusty bunch that snuck BushCo into office in the first place -- for slapping the tragically heartless GOP right across its wan butt with a leather whip and a shocking 6-3 decision, stunning the Christian right into disbelief and abject terror.

Gay ex-Falcon comes out -- but is he famous enough to change anything? Bryant Gumbel let me down. For at least a week, Gumbel has been promoting his HBO show's "coming out" interview next Tuesday with a former NFL player. Speculation sprouted all over Internet chat rooms and even in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, where rumors had been whispered about a former Viking. Who would it be? Gay folks are always hoping celebrities will come out of the closet publicly. We get downright giddy about a glamorous, male athlete doing so because -- well, because it's never really happened before....
