NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Though the wine and spirits markets have grown during the last few years, Americans' love of beer still hasn't reached last call. Americans put down 28.2 gallons of beer per capita last year, according to Washington, D.C., beer industry group The Beer Institute. That's nearly two 15.5-gallon kegs apiece, or nearly six of their buddy's five-gallon homebrew kegs. It's also well up from the 20.8 gallons they put down last year, which is saying far more about the health of the industry than it lets on. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD_) and MolsonCoors (TAP_) have seen their U.S....

Hong Luo doesn't drink beer himself—he's allergic to alcohol. But Luo, chair of the University at Buffalo's physics department, knows all about the secrets of pouring a smooth brew. That's because it's just basic physics. "You see so many things in everyday life that seem simple, but if you look at the physics more closely, it's really quite neat," he said. "There's science everywhere." So as fall gets underway and tailgating parties abound, drink safely and take note: Cans with significantly wider mouths or two holes—which some brands are newly marketing—really do cut down on foam and awkward glugging, Luo...

A wild boar in Australia caused a ruckus in a campsite when the swine stole and drank 18 beers from a camper. The pig then got the drunk munchies and rooted around various campsites for food, the Metro reports. The pig apparently then decided to pick a fight with a nearby cow, however the fight didn’t turn out the way he probably imagined it would. A camper said, “There were some other people camped right on the river and they saw him being chased around their vehicle by a cow.” Authorities searched for the boar only to find him passed...

In an incredible story from the USA Today, a man and his son were kicked out of an Arizona Cardinals football game after the man asked his 15-year old son to hold his beer so he could retrieve his camera from his pocket. That is all it took for two undercover Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control officers to descend on those “criminals”. They threatened to arrest the man, but ended up throwing him and his son out of the game instead for the crime of asking his son to temporarily hold his beer. Officials for the Arizona Liquor...

A Polish archaeologist at the Jagiellonian University Institute of Archaeology has made a 3D reconstruction of a 5,500-year-old brewing installation which was found at Tell el-Farcha, an archaeological site in Egypt dating back to approximately 3700 BC when it functioned as a centre of local Lower Egyptian Culture. The virtual reconstruction has brought to life the ancient scene in which Egyptians practiced a traditional form of beer making. The reconstruction was created based on preserved structures of similar analogous buildings at both Tell el-Farcha and other brewing centres in Upper Egypt. The Tell el-Farcha brewery, the oldest ever brewery found...

John Morillo, a 47-year-old Canadian man, acknowledged that it was "really stupid" of him to drink eight beers and swim across the Detroit River on Monday night. However, he is glad that he actually made it. “If I’m going to be in the paper, I’d at least like them to say I actually made it, even though I got in trouble and everything,” he told The Windsor Star Tuesday. “I gotta pay fines and stuff. But I don’t want it to sound like I didn’t make it, because then my buddies are going to say ‘ha, ha, you didn’t make...

The White House will announce today that a truce be called between DOJ and the failed conviction of that *%&$##@* White-Hispanic, George Zimmerman, by calling on both sides to meet at the White House Rose Garden for a few beers. It is said a few feathers got badly ruffled by the whole ordeal, especially since the weight of the government and the media lap dogs could not sway the general public to disregard fact and the law and convict on emotion alone. In essence, their strategy to ignite a raging fire across the land was unsuccessful, at least to the...

Regulation: No longer the stuff of science fiction, a little-noticed change in energy-efficiency requirements for appliances could lead to government controlling the power used in your home and how you set your thermostat. In a seemingly innocuous revision of its Energy Star efficiency requirements announced June 27, the Environmental Protection Agency included an "optional" requirement for a "smart-grid" connection for customers to electronically connect their refrigerators or freezers with a utility provider. The feature lets the utility provider regulate the appliances' power consumption, "including curtailing operations during more expensive peak-demand times." So far, manufacturers are not required to include the...

I realize you're going to spend Independence Day happily drinking whatever cold adult beverage you're served, because you're polite and you're an alcoholic. And I trust you'll have a fine old time no matter what you drink. But that doesn't mean America's sh**brews are all the same. The list below breaks down 36 of them, from worst to least-worst. 36. Keystone. This is the worst beer currently sold on American soil. It sits behind chilled glass in a convenience-store fridge like a dumb rebuke to the explosion of American beer variety all around it. In 1978 there were 89 breweries...

This weekend I saw a commercial for Sam Adams beer that upset me. The commercial is called "Independence". It featers a guy ostensibly quoting the Declaration of Independence, except he deliberately omits a key phrase (just like Obama). Have you seen this commercial? Did you catch what was deliberately omitted?

You can't brew beer without malt, which is something Ted Hawley thinks legislators forgot about when they passed a farm brewing bill last year that will eventually require ales and lagers labeled "New York Beer" to contain 90 percent locally grown ingredients. "They just thought they could grow barley in New York," Hawley said. "They didn't know there was another step, which is malting. It has to be malted before you use it in a brew. So it was kind of interesting that they put this huge amount of effort into requiring 90 percent ingredients from New York, but there's...

TUCUMCARI – A Tucumcari man’s five-year effort to be exonerated of charges for having an open container of O’Doul’s non-alcoholic beer in his car ran into a procedural hurdle Tuesday in 10th District Court. Judge Albert Mitchell threw out Gary Southern’s motion to have his conviction for having an open container of an alcoholic beverage in his car set aside because it was based on a writ of coram nobis, a procedural device that has been abolished in New Mexico courts. Mitchell then advised Southern that he had two options: He could appeal Mitchell’s decision of Tuesday or file a...
