WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda says he's not surprised by his friend Donald Sterling's racist remarks. The former Dodgers manager tells West Palm Beach station WPBF after 30 years of friendship with Sterling, "It doesn't surprise me that he said those things. And he shouldn't have said it." Lasorda also offered his thoughts on the woman Sterling was talking to on the tape, V. Stiviano, saying: "I don't wish that girl any bad luck, but I hope she gets hit with a car."(continued)

For the baseball fan who loves history, this is pretty awesome. From Dawson City Museum and Historical Society Collection as well as Library and Archives Canada comes some actual video footage of the notorious 1919 World Series (or the "world's series" as it was known at the time) between the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. It's difficult to tell what exactly in happening in several portions of the video and there is no audio, but that's not really what it's all about, is it? Check this out:British Canadian Pathé News, 81A: [1919 World Series excerpt]Great stuff. Seasoned baseball minds...

Over the last two weeks, we polled the Awful Announcing readers on their opinions of each local broadcast team around the majors. The polls were broken down division by division to gain the perspective of both fans and rivals for each broadcast team. The votes are in, and we weighted your grades on a four point scale for each broadcast crew and sorted them to determine who your favorite and least favorite broadcast teams were. Each “A” vote received 4 points, 3 points for a “B” vote, down to 0 points for an “F” vote. The total points scored were...

After taking a 90 mph fastball to the face during a Friday game, Houston Astros prospect Delino DeShields Jr. showed off his injuries online this weekend — and they’re not pretty. The minor league center fielder was struck by the ball on the right side of his face during a game in Frisco, Texas. Miraculously he managed to walk off the field after sustaining the blow. Cereal eaters, terrible dancers, and latex salesmen will be especially welcome in Brooklyn in early July. Jerry Seinfeld wore his Mets fandom on his sleeve during the long run of his eponymous sitcom, and now, one of the team's minor league affiliates is returning the favor. Quite literally, in fact. The Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ short season single A team based in Coney Island, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original airing of the “Seinfeld” pilot with a night filled with festivities about nothing, so to speak. On July 5, the team is transforming MCU Park into an arena...

Yesterday wasn’t just tax day, it was the 67th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the baseball color barrier by playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. For those games not washed away by rain or snow, teams wore #42 jerseys in his honor. ESPN, as usual, used the anniversary to lament the dwindling number of black baseball players. The number of blacks playing major league baseball has gotten extremely low in recent years. It goes right along with a massive decrease in the number of black kids playing baseball and going to baseball games. In many ways the decrease in black interest...

As a scheduled part of their home opener, the Atlanta Braves set off fireworks before their game against the New York Mets on Tuesday. As an unscheduled part of their home opener, the fireworks set fire to the American flag that flies above the Braves Vision video screen in center field. "It happened because of new pyrotechnics," Braves spokesperson Beth Marshall said. "For the first time, they put pyrotechnics on Braves Vision. One of the pyrotechnics flew at the flag and lit it on fire." Marshall added that the material of the flag is flame retardant, so it went out...

He won the hearts of San Francisco five months ago, when the city morphed into Gotham City to lift the spirits of a 5-year-old battling leukemia. And Batkid still evoked strong emotions when he took the mound at the Giants home opener at AT&T Park on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The tiny superhero, aka Miles Scott of Siskyou County, threw the first pitch at the game, where the Giants were victorious, 7-3. An especially poignant image was when the little boy dressed all in black held hands with pitcher Matt Cain on the field. SF Morphs Into Gotham City...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)On the 40th anniversary of his momentous 715th home run that broke Babe Ruth's MLB home run record, which is the most meaningful in all of sports, Hank Aaron equated Republicans who oppose President Barack Obama's policies to the KKK. Aaron implied that conservatives are racists who now wear "neckties and starched shirts" instead of hoods. In an interview with USA Today's Bob Nightengale on Tuesday, "Hammerin' Hank" lamented that the country has not progressed far enough on race relations, saying that though the nation has a black president, "President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud...

Went to the first Royals game today (office thing) - great game, 7-1 (yes it was Tampa, but I'll take it). They have potential, back to 4-4 and still even with this game - (28th in runs...30th in slugging). If they can find some bats, we might be decent. All that being said, they are now wanding you to get into the games and you have to take everything out of your pockets. Anyone know if this is everywhere (MLB thing) - or KC being stupid. How long 'til the shoes come off and they're fondling your junk?

...Hank Aaron compared Republicans that oppose President Barack Obama to the Ku Klux Klan.... “Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated,” Aaron told USA Today Sports. Aaron continued: “The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.”

"Nobody out, men on 1st & 2nd. Batters hits a pop up, umpire calls infield fly rule, batter is out (1). Man on first accidentally runs past the runner on second. He is out (2). The man on second gets hit by the falling pop up WHILE he is off the base. He is out(3). Triple Play. BONUS--Which fielder(s) get credited with the 3 outs? The defensive player closest to the play gets credited for all three outs though he never touched the ball.

Being a sports radio host sometimes means being full of hot air when white noise would be preferable, as in the case Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason. The big names showed their small attitudes when New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy chose to be with his wife rather that at opening day of baseball season. Esiason said: “I would have said, ‘C-Section before it starts. I need to be at opening day. This is how we make our money; this is how we live our life. This is what is going to give our child every opportunity to be...

"Andre Dawson," Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully once said, "has a bruised knee and is listed as day-to-day. Aren't we all?" Yes, so use some of your remaining time constructively by identifying the player or players who: (1) Won three batting titles by at least 44 points (two players)...

September 6, 1995 I flew to Austin, Texas to watch a baseball game on TV with The Lad who was then an undergrad at the University of Texas. The occasion was Cal Ripken's 2,131st consecutive Major League game, breaking Lou Gehrig's record. Baseball has been a bond between us. When the Lad played Little League I rarely missed a game. In McLean, Virginia it was not at all noteworthy to see national leaders - Administration and Congressional, Democrat and Republican - working in the snack bar or helping prepare one of the fields. I remember leaning on the centerfield...
