The far-right Austrian presidential candidate Norbert Hofer’s campaign manager, Herbert Kickl, has conceded his candidate’s defeat to former Greens leader Alexander Van der Bellen, Reuters reports. Kickl told the state broadcaster: The bottom line is it didn’t quite work out. In this case the establishment - which pitched in once again to block, to stonewall and to prevent renewal - has won. Also: If confirmed, the margin of Van der Bellen’s forecast win over Hofer in Austria is a major surprise. Polls in the run-up to the vote had the two candidates neck-and-neck, with several putting the far-right Freedom party’s...

Far-right candidate Norbert Hofer has lost Austria's presidential election. His campaign manager said he had conceded victory to independent candidate, Alexander Van der Bellen. The Austrian presidency is largely ceremonial but the vote had been seen as a sign of how well populist candidates might do in upcoming elections in the European Union. The result is sure to be welcomed by establishment parties and officials in the EU. The election was a re-run of May's poll which suffered irregularities. Former Green Party head Mr Van der Bellen had a clear lead, according to projections.

Vienna (AFP) - Austria's long and ugly presidential campaign drew to a close Saturday, with the far-right aiming to emulate Donald Trump and Brexit campaigners by dealing a hammer-blow to Vienna's centrist establishment. A victory on Sunday for Norbert Hofer from the anti-immigration and EU-critical Freedom Party (FPOe) would make him Europe's first far-right elected president since World War II. The presidency is largely ceremonial but it would be another triumph for populist politics a month after Donald Trump's US election victory and barely five months since the British chose to leave the European Union. The election comes on the...
  • Is this weekend the EU DIES? Major votes in Italy and Austria could spark end of the bloc

THE EUROPEAN UNION looks set to be shattered by a potential influx of Eurosceptic country leaders who refuse to toe the line of the Brussels elite This weekend Austria could be set to elect its first far-right leader while Italy could simultaneously lose its Europhile Prime Minister. Both outcomes would be a massive blow to the Union as fear begins to spread around the the corridors of Brussels - both nations have put a vote to the people and could start the process of engineering themselves out of the EU. The beleaguered EU boss Jean-Claude Juncker is watching his superstate...

Can far-right, anti-immigrant, gun-loving politician Norbert Hofer become the next anti-establishment figure to lead his country? Norbert Hofer is the friendly face of far-right politics in Austria. The 45-year-old engineer is well-tailored and gun-loving - and he sells anti-immigrant policies with a smile. Mr Hofer has also struck a chord with an increasingly polarised electorate. The senior member of the nationalist 'Freedom Party' told a packed audience at his final campaign event for the presidency that the time had come to put ordinary people first. "Austrian men and Austrian women have a strong will to succeed - to make this...

They say the third time is a charm and for the third time this year, a runoff election for president of Austria is set for tomorrow, December 4th. The first runoff earlier this year resulted in victory for leftist candidate Alexander van der Bellen over Nationalist candidate Norbert Hofer. But Hofer's Austrian Freedom Party challenged the election in court alleging irregularities in postal ballots (absentee votes). And they won. A second election was set for early this fall but the government decided to cancel the vote when early postal ballots were discovered to have irregularities in them. Polling data at...

How many like him have entered the West? How many will Obama allow into the US before he goes? This jihad murderer was a member of one of Obama’s partners in Syria, the “Free Syrian Army.” That tells you everything about his “vetting” process. ... Austrian prosecutors have charged a member of a Syrian rebel group with 20 counts of murder for allegedly executing wounded government soldiers in his home country. The 27-year-old man was arrested in a refugee shelter in western Austria in June after being denounced by a fellow Syrian. ... The prosecutors were able to bring charges...

Austria’s Chancellor Christian Kern has denied that Austria is a country full of racists, ahead of the upcoming presidential election which could see the far-right candidate win. People will vote because of what they are afraid of, said Austria’s Chancellor Christian Kern, adding that Austria is not a country full of racists. He was commenting on the upcoming presidential election in which the far-right candidate, Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party (FPÖ) could win. A Muslim driver screaming “Allahu Akbar” tried to mow down people walking in the street in Vienna, Austria — and police, who’ve taken the 21-year-old into custody, are now investigating his motive, various media report. Investigating his motive? […] Nobody was injured and police nabbed him almost immediately. But to dither over motive at a time when terror attacks are sweeping across the globe does nothing to protect the innocent. After all, it seems pretty straightforward, with the call of “Allahu Akbar” followed quickly by an act of attempted murder that radical Islamism might have played a role, right? Right....

A Bosnian migrant in Austria traveled back to his homeland to blow up his ex-girlfriend with a hand grenade when he found out she was seeing somebody else. Bosnian migrant Dalibor Gavric, 42, lived in the Austrian capital of Vienna where he met waitress Miljana Malesevic, 24, also from Bosnia. The couple started a relationship and even though he was married and had two daughters, he divorced his wife so that he could live with the younger woman. But he was always jealous, and frequently the jealousy turned to violence which resulted in Milijana, with whom Gavric had a 4-year-old...
  • Austria Lays Groundwork For Hungarian Border Fence

Austria has begun laying a base on which a fence could quickly be erected along a 1.2 mile stretch of its border with Hungary, next to the crossing that hundreds of thousands of migrants used during a wave of arrivals a year ago. The preparations, which involve burying vertical pipes in the ground into which fence poles can be inserted, began on Monday, but a decision whether to put up a fence has not yet been reached, a police spokesman said. The fence near the crossing in the town of Nickelsdorf would be erected if Austria decides to activate tough...

MUSLIMS want to eradicate Christianity and conquer Europe - the Catholic cardinal tipped to be the next POPE has incredibly claimed. Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn gave the unexpected warning on Sunday during a special celebration for the Church festival "Holy Name of Mary". According to the Archdiocese of Vienna, the Cardinal said: "Will there be an Islamic conquest of Europe? Many Muslims want that and say: Europe is at its end." He asked God to have mercy on Europe and to show mercy to its people, which he said "are in danger of forfeiting our Christian heritage." Cardinal Schoenborn, who...

An embarrassing postponement of Austria's high-stakes October 2 presidential election looked all but inevitable Saturday, because of technical problems involving glue failing to stick on postal votes. The last election result from May was annulled after Austria's highest court upheld claims of procedural irregularities made by the narrowly-defeated far-right. This necessitated fresh elections but this time there appear to be problems with glue on postal votes not sticking, making them invalid. On Saturday independent ecologist Alexander Van der Bellen joined his rival in the vote, Norbert Hofer from the far-right, in saying he now expects a postponement. "I don't believe...
