The offices of the Atlanta Braves have been flooded with racist letters, emails, and phone calls attacking Hall of Famer Hank Aaron after his interview comparing the way Republicans treat President Barack Obama to the Ku Klux Klan. USA Today writer Bob Nightengale said the "sheer racism" of the attack against Aaron was similar to the racist onslaught that the African-American star faced in 1974 when he broke Babe Ruth's home-run record. Nightengale noted that the new hate mail messages came as baseball was celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, on Tuesday. One bigoted writer named Edward wrote an email...

Jere Brower, his wife Clara, and his 4-year-old daughter Ana, have a very good reason to believe Texas Congressman Ron Paul when he said people view his supporters as "dangerous." The 38-year-old Atlanta man and his family have been targeted by militant Ron Paul supporters, one of whom threatened to "kneecap" him, then rape his wife and young daughter. Mr. Brower said he has also received death threats from supporters of Ron Paul. The trouble started when Brower and some of his Facebook friends decided to have a laugh over Ron Paul's ties to racist and anti-semitic groups. He wrote...

As you read the following, keep in mind that this happened three weeks ago. The only reason I know about it is because Glenn Reynolds linked to it this morning.WXIA in Atlanta, Feb. 5: The FBI says a Georgia Tech graduate student was burned by a Molotov cocktail at his apartment in the 200 block of 10th Street, not far from Piedmont Park. Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Saamer Akhshabi suffered third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body. Lighter fluid and a charred pillow and mattress were found inside the apartment, along with the Molotov cocktail and several...

They can make fun of us if they want. Georgians know that grace and generosity are more important than blame. While others may make fun and cast blame, the important stories are not about how weather happens, snow comes and we get caught in traffic jams for hours or how we abandon cars and pick them up a day to two later. The real stories are about strangers handing out food and water, stores and restaurants welcoming those who are stranded, providing them shelter for the night. They are of neighbors getting together for large dinners, friends walking miles to...

Atlanta won't get fooled again. The South is bracing for another blast of winter weather starting Monday night, and Georgia and its biggest city are determined to avoid a repeat of last month's disaster. Cold will meet precipitation, creating an icy mess from northeast Texas to the Carolinas through Wednesday, according to Weather.com. After 2 inches of snow in late January debilitated parts of Georgia — particularly Atlanta — leaving kids stranded in schools and cars stuck on highways overnight, the state’s transportation department cried wolf last Thursday when declaring a winter weather storm watch for Atlanta that wasn’t. But...

NEW YORK (AP) -- CNN's Carol Costello was more than prepared for her contentious live interview with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on Wednesday, having spent frustrating hours caught in the epic traffic snarls caused by the rare Southern snowstorm. Unlike other motorists, Costello wasn't stranded overnight in her car, but it took two tries and more than three hours for her to drive two miles to her home Tuesday from the news network's Atlanta headquarters.

Bad storm. Terrific people. The whole country is talking about the Atlanta Ice Down, and I know you've all heard the stories of people being stuck in traffic for 11 hours. The way the story is being told, it must sound like those of us in the Southeast have no idea what to do when a few snowflakes start coming down. But the main national stories didn’t tell the whole story about what happened. The problem was not that two or three inches of snow fell. Believe it or not, southerners can handle driving in two or three inches of snow....

It was a winter storm response described as an "epic failure" of government by one national news network. A midday winter storm struck Atlanta's metro population of nearly 6 million on Tuesday. By early afternoon, hundreds of thousands of commuters had taken to the streets, all at once, in a desperate effort to get home. At the same time school systems dismissed an army of students, many on buses. Government got into the act too, telling workers to hit the road. But by the time everyone started out, what began as flurries became several inches of snow on the highways...

Thousands of Atlanta students stranded all night long in their schools were reunited with their parents Wednesday, while rescuers rushed to deliver blankets, food, gas and a ride home to countless shivering motorists stopped cold by a storm that paralyzed the business capital of the South with less than 3 inches of snow. The result was gridlock on freeways that are jammed even on normal days. Countless vehicles were stranded and many of them abandoned. Officials said 239 children spent Tuesday night aboard school buses; thousands of others stayed overnight in their schools. One woman's 12-mile commute home took 16...

The blizzard of '93 brought more snow than most Atlanta natives had ever seen or will see. The floods of 2009 brought an unexpected rush of water that submerged interstates. The winter storm of 2011 took an entire week away from the city. But the Snow Jam of 2014 might be the single craziest weather day in Atlanta in a generation. 1-to-3 inches of snow, mixed in with an afternoon drive that still hasn't ended has brought Atlanta to its knees again. “There are certain things we don’t have control over and one of those is the weather. This came...

Slippery, snowy roads left students stranded in school late Tuesday night as parents waded through paralyzing traffic and buses struggled to arrive, hours after school was dismissed early. Some schools and their employees braced for the possibility that students might have to sleep at school overnight if no one could reach them on slick roads. “We definitely might be pulling an all-nighter here,” said Thomas Algarin, spokesman for Marietta City Schools. “We have been trying to transport students all afternoon, into evening and up to about 30 minutes ago, Cobb school spokesman Jay Dillon said in an e-mail send to...

The (light) snow started about 11:00 AM, schools were shutdown at 1:00, but nobody down can drive in anything white. People are taking 3-4 hours to get from downtown to even the expressway around Atlanta I-285. One baby was delivered on the side of Loop 285 - parents couldn't get to the hospital. Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport had a "ground stop" from about 15:00 (3:00 pm) to 17:30. It's now just lifted, but the planes aren't taking off yet. That will plug all arriving flights for many more hours.
  • Man Who Slapped Toddler on Flight from Mpls. Sentenced to 8 months

A federal judge on Monday sentenced a man who pleaded guilty to slapping a crying toddler on an Atlanta-bound flight to serve eight months in federal prison. Joe Rickey Hundley was accused of using a racial slur to refer to the 19-month-old boy, who's black, and hitting him under the eye as the flight from Minneapolis descended to the Atlanta airport last February. He pleaded guilty in October to simple assault after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors. As the plane descended into Atlanta, the child started crying. Hundley leaned over to Bennett and "told her to shut that (N-word)...
