    10/18/2016 9:16:38 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 12 replies
An AR-15 that was used as a photo prop for a Saturday wedding in Laurel Hill was taken from the owner's vehicle over the weekend. The Crestview man told Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office deputies that he left his car unlocked for a period of time during the event. The gun is one of at least two taken from unlocked vehicles in north Okaloosa County in the last few days. The man said that the DPMS AR-15 was valued at about $1,000 with a $500 scope. He discovered it missing Sunday. There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle....

Bob Dylan, regarded as the voice of a generation for his influential songs from the 1960s onwards, has won the Nobel Prize for Literature in a surprise decision that made him the only singer-songwriter to win the award. The 75-year-old Dylan — who won the prize for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition" — now finds himself in the company of Winston Churchill, Thomas Mann and Rudyard Kipling as Nobel laureates. The announcement was met with gasps in Stockholm's stately Royal Academy hall, followed — unusually — by some laughter. Dylan's songs, such as "Blowin'...

A federal appeals court Tuesday called out a lower-court judge for tossing a copyright infringement lawsuit over the 80-year-old sketch “Who’s On First?” — but upheld the dismissal anyway. A three-judge panel from the Second Circuit Court of Appeals said Manhattan federal court Judge George Daniels erred in throwing out the lawsuit brought by the kin of Abbott & Costello, who claimed they owned the copyright to the famous comedy routine.

he footage of this albino bull moose is as rare as wildlife footage gets. Since Alaska’s human population is extremely low, an encounters with albino bull moose almost never happen. This rare footage shows what looks like a respectable bull moose still wearing it’s velvety antlers. I Love Alaska originally shared the video on their Facebook page and received a lot of positive feedback. One person commented, “WOW it’s like our own Alaskan unicorn!!” Watch the video below to see this amazing animal for yourself.Video: http://www.wideopenspaces.com/albino-bull-moose-alaska-caught-film/
  • Raphael Painting Valued at $26M Once Thought to Be $25 Copy

A painting once believed to be a $25 copy caught the eye of an art historian during the filming of a new BBC series — and turned out to be a $26 million Raphael. The Madonna composition had been covered in dirt and hanging above a door in the dusty corner of a room in the Haddo House, one of the National Trust for Scotland’s 18th-century homes in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. “I thought, crikey, it looks like a Raphael,” the historian, Bendor Grosvenor, told The Guardian. “It was very dirty, under old varnish, which goes yellow.”

Police carrying out a crackdown on the Camorra organised crime group have recovered two Van Gogh paintings stolen 14 years ago. The masterpieces - Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuene and View of the Sea at Scheveningen - were painted by the Dutch artist early in his career. "They're safe," said Van Gogh Museum director Axel Rueger. "I no longer dared to hope that I could ever say that, after so many years."

“Wonder Woman” just became wonderfully inclusive. In an interview with Comicosity, Wonder Woman comics writer Greg Rucka discussed the new thematic elements his comic series following the superhuman Diana, including the much talked-about sexual orientation of its titular character. When asked about the subject, Rucka confirmed that his Wonder Woman is, indeed, queer. “When you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is, ‘How can they not all be in same-sex relationships?’ Right? It makes no logical sense otherwise,” he

A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student had a serious complaint for his campus’ official “Hate Response Team”: he was “very upset” by a Harry Potter mural in a college dorm. The mural, in the Laux Residence Hall, depicts Neville Longbottom, a character from the Harry Potter films. The nerdy Neville was played by actor Matthew Lewis, who blossomed into a notable hunk post-puberty. The mural shows him as both a geeky boy and an attractive young man — transformed, according to the mural’s caption, by a stay at the Laux Residence Hall itself. The depiction of this metamorphosis “represents our...

MOSCOW, September 25. /TASS/. The Officers of a Russia's non-governmental organization have blocked the entrance to the exhibition of the U.S. photographer Jock Sturges in Moscow in a protest against promoting his works, the organization’s head, and chair of the Public Chamber’s defense commission, Anton Tsvetkov said on Sunday. "If considered in Russia, the works by Jock Sturges could be qualified as a crime." "Right, he could have become famous by good pictures, but remember, this man used to participate in crimes. And he likewise was brought to responsibility also in the United States, though later on was justified. But...

When the Beatles visited New Orleans for their now-legendary City Park concert in September 1964, they had two primary requests. Following the show, they wanted a day off from their grueling 25-concert, 30-day tour, in order to bask in the music of one of America's most soulful cities; and they wanted to meet local musician Fats Domino, one of their major influences. As far as that day off goes, it was scheduled – and then un-scheduled when the band was offered a reported $150,000, which is said to be about six times their normal fee, to add a last-minute concert...

  • Was This Masterpiece Painted With Ground Mummy?

    09/19/2016 11:07:43 AM PDT · by BenLurkin · 43 replies
Eugene Delacroix's most famous painting, "Liberty Leading the People," hangs in a revered spot in Paris' Louvre Museum. Inspired by the 1830 Paris Uprising, it has been held up as an embodiment of the French national ethos, and most recently as a justification for the country's controversial burkini ban. But "Liberty Leading the People" may also have been literally painted with people. From at least the 16th century until as late as the early 1900s, a pigment made from mummified human remains appeared on the palettes of European artists, including Delacroix. Painters prized "mummy brown" for its rich, transparent shade....
