As throngs of Kentucky Derby-goers packed Churchill Downs on Saturday, Kentucky Democrats are enjoying another race that could come down to the wire later this month: the Republican gubernatorial primary. “It’s a lot of fun,” House Speaker Greg Stumbo said of the four-way GOP primary. Gov. Steve Beshear added: “They’re having a good time it looks like among the four of them going back and forth.” This year’s race for the governorship is an oddity, with only Attorney General Jack Conway seeking the Democratic nomination among prominent contenders after a rich history of competitive primaries when that office is open....

~ McConnell said he expects a lot of gender-based attacks coming from Alison Lundergan Grimes, the secretary of state and frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. But he said that isn’t what the 2014 election should be about. “What you are going to see by my opponent obviously is the Barack Obama playbook to try to divide people with gender based attacks. We have seen that all too often and some of it has started already,” McConnell told the crowd. “But look, this campaign is about what kind of America do we want to have and what kind of Kentucky do...

Republicans battled Tuesday to retain control of the House as Democrats pinned their longshot hopes of capturing the chamber on sweeping the lion's share of the few truly competitive races. Among the evening's earliest returns, four-term veteran Rep. Anne Northup, R-Ky., once again survived a determined Democratic attempt to oust her from her Louisville-area seat. And Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., a contender to chair the House Appropriations Committee in the next Congress, was elected unopposed to his 12th term, as were nine other uncontested representatives from Florida.

A former campaign aide to Rep. Anne Northup (R-Ky.) embezzled $20,000 from the congresswoman’s re-election campaign in 2002, a senior campaign official has confirmed. The embezzlement allegations will be revealed next week when the campaign files its fourth-quarter fundraising report with the Federal Election Commission. The woman, Stephine Stottmann, stole the money over several months by cashing her paychecks but telling campaign officials she had lost them and obtaining reimbursement checks, the official said. There was a delay in discovering the duplicity, the official said, because the money came from two different sources: first the payroll service and later the...

OPERATION INFINITE FREEP opened a new front tonight in Louisville, KY!! My thanks to bluesagewoman, Trteamer and all the honored FReepers out there who gave me great ideas and advice for tracking down the website of our local peace wackos. Their http://www.louisvillepeace.org site gave me all the intel I needed to get us organized. They conducted a rather quiet candlelight vigil/war protest in front of U.S. Rep. Anne Northup's house. I met up with a fine young man from Bellarmine University who is the President of the campus Republicans and we got our FReep on. Thanks to the Colorado FReepers...

Tonight Pres. Bush came to campaign for Rep. Anne Northup (KY-03) and Mike Sodrell, the challenger to Baron Hill (D-IN district 9). As always the President was brilliant and he energized the crowd with pretty much the standard stump speech. But it was the action outside that I longed to get out to. Coming in to the International Convention Center my wife and I saw the protesters gathered at the southwest corner of the Center across the street with police keeping them from crossing the street to harass the 4,000 people lining up to go through security. They were the...

The tickets for the President Bush/Anne Northup rally at the International Convention Center in Louisville are all gone. However, if you can make it we need any available FReepers to counter the protesters that are sure to show up. I don't know where the protest area will be but I'm sure the police will point you in the right direction. If it was anything like Cincinnati there will be a huge crowd of Osama/Saddam loving 'RATs that will need a gooooooooood FReeping! Rally is on Friday, Nov. 1st. Doors open at 3:00PM. "We will not tire. We will not falter....
