Despite progress in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the U.S. since its peak during the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital-acquired AMR infections remain well above pre-pandemic levels, according to a major new study examining AMR before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic in 120 US hospitals. The study was led by Dr. Christina Yek from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and is being presented at this year's ESCMID Global Congress (formerly ECCMID) in Barcelona, Spain (27-30 April). It reveals that AMR rates remain high largely due to the persistence...

Candidate Donald Trump said of Hillary Clinton’s e-mail scandal, “This corruption and collusion is just one more reason why I will ask my attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor.” He later upped the ante with the declaration, “She has to go to jail.” Now, it appears that the Trump State Department is working to keep the e-mails secret. On May 5, Judicial Watch issued a press release announcing that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered the U.S. Department of State to turn over to the watchdog organization "eight identical paragraphs" of previously redact material in two September 13,...

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi on Saturday called on US President Barack Obama to be "proactive" in ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his forthcoming term, according to AFP. "We hope that the new American administration adopts a policy of conflict resolution rather than conflict management," Arabi said during a visit with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr to the Ramallah headquarters of Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmud Abbas. Arabi said that in the four-hour meeting with Abbas they discussed the Arab League's promise to provide an economic "safety net" of $100 million a month to alleviate the effect of Israeli...

NBC 5 has learned that Fort Worth-based American Airlines may cut between 10,000 and 15,000 jobs across the company. A meeting where AMR executives are expected to lay out the company's plan for moving forward began mid-morning Wednesday. The plan is expected to include layoffs, pension and pay cuts, and the possible closure of an airplane maintenance facility at Fort Worth's Alliance Airport. SNIP-------- American Airlines' parent company AMR filed for bankruptcy in November of...

American Airlines went bust this morning, which should have come as a surprise to no one who has followed the company and airline industry over the years. (The company recently denied bankruptcy rumors by stating that bankruptcy was "certainly not our goal or preference," which is about as close as a corporation will ever come to saying "Of course we're going to declare bankruptcy, you idiots, why are you even bothering to ask?") But the bankruptcy WILL come as a surprise to the millions of Americans who have repeatedly been exposed to one of the consensual hallucinations that bullish investors...

Just Whose Neighborhood Is It Anyway?by Daniel Sargis26 January 2004Through a succession of CEO’s starting with Robert Crandall, American Airlines has demonstrated its grit to become a case study in mismanagement. Always beware of a company that tells you they want to be, “a good neighbor!” If I learned one thing in my M.B.A. program...a company is in business to serve the long-term best interests of its owners. All of this “good neighbor” tripe is...well, just tripe. And American Airlines (AA.) keeps making that point. That “something special in the air” does “what they do best” by “fly(ing) naked”...

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR - News) announced that due to the state of current market conditions, it has decided not to sell a convertible debt offering launched earlier today. "With the significant improvement we have seen in AMR's operating results beginning in May, and with our strong cash balance of more than $2.7 billion, we felt it made no sense to proceed with this transaction in market conditions as they evolved today, and which are at odds with the growing improvement of our company," said AMR's Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer...

Monday Hot Flash - April 21, 2003 Until late last week, American had it made. They had engineered an out-of-bankruptcy turnaround that put them eons ahead of the competition. With tough and direct bargaining, management and labor jointly crafted a plan to posture American to not only survive, but grow and prosper. It really looked like they had pulled it off. Now, by trying to hide a measly few million in cushy executive perks, AA management has single-handedly torpedoed the entire deal. American had been extorting the troops to believe that the airline was in deep into the financial weeds,...

After Employees Agree to Cuts, American Airlines Discloses Trust to Shield Executives FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- One day after American Airlines employees agreed to annual cuts of $1.8 billion, the cooperative spirit turned acrimonious Thursday as union leaders expressed outrage over newly disclosed perks granted to executives. One angry union leader said if workers had known earlier about a pension trust created last year to protect executives' benefits in the event of a bankruptcy filing, they might have voted against the steep concessions intended to keep the world's largest carrier out of Chapter 11. The executive perks, which included...
