Canadian authorities yesterday declared they had foiled a chilling bomb plot aimed at several targets in their country - busting an al Qaeda-inspired cell with likely connections to a pair of Atlanta-area men indicted on terror charges. The 17 suspects - including five youths 18 or under - were busted Friday night and yesterday morning at locations in and around Toronto, following a delivery of three tons of ammonium nitrate and other explosive components. The tonnage was three times the amount used in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. New York City police said they were...

Authorities investigate theft of possibly explosive chemical Last Update: 11/26/2003 4:29:42 PM By: Todd Dukart Federal and local authorities are investigating 350 pounds of a potentially explosive chemical stolen from a Bernalillo County company. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department say seven 50-pound bags of ammonium nitrate were stolen from Titan Energy, located off an Interstate 40 frontage road near Nine Mile Hill. The chemical is not volatile by itself, but it can be dangerous. It’s commonly used as fertilizer and a component of explosives for mining and construction. “There is a concern...

This is my first post (not reply), so please be kind... Anyway, I was reading here at FR about the missing Amonium Nitrate. Several people commented about how it was a "slow" explosive material (when made to be one). Does that also imply that it burns at a low temp? The reason I ask is this. You know that low level radiological materials have been reported missing here and there. Would such a slow incindiary device be more condusive for a dirty bomb, or would optimum dispersal come from a quick, hot burning device? I'm concerned about this aspect... I...

FoxNews is reporting that Feds are investigating the theft/disappearance of 1100 pounds of amonium nitrate (remember Murrah Federal Building) from two construction work sites--One in Colorado and the other in California. Apparently the explosives were taken over the past week/weekend.
