Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has announced that she will retire after her current term expires. In a letter released Thursday, Hutchison said she will not run for re-election in 2012. Hutchison has said she might retire and then changed her mind several times in the last few years. In 2010, she challenged Gov. Rick Perry in the Republican primary for governor, but lost. Hutchison has been in the Senate since 1993.

SANTA ROSA -- Days after massive bird die-offs in the south, Sonoma County officials Tuesday had a mystery of their own as more than 100 bird carcasses were discovered near Geyserville. California Highway Patrol Officer Jon Sloat said the birds were discovered on to Independence Lane at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The California Department of Fish and Game was notified and a local warden responded. A worker at a KFC restaurant in Sydney has been suspended after he was filmed screaming vicious insults and threatening to attack a customer. ROME — A parcel bomb exploded in the Swiss Embassy here on Thursday, seriously injuring a diplomatic employee, the police and embassy officials said. The attack, which the Italian foreign minister called a “deplorable act of violence,” rattled a city already on edge after violent student protests last week and ongoing security alerts across Europe this month. The embassy said in a statement that a package containing a hidden explosive device detonated around noon when an embassy employee opened it, causing injuries to both of his hands.
