Child miners aged four living a hell on Earth so YOU can drive an electric car: Awful human cost in squalid Congo cobalt mine that Michael Gove didn’t consider in his ‘clean’ energy crusadePicking through a mountain of huge rocks with his tiny bare hands, the exhausted little boy makes a pitiful sight. His name is Dorsen and he is one of an army of children, some just four years old, working in the vast polluted mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where toxic red dust burns their eyes, and they run the risk of skin disease and...

Zimbabwe receives $150 million in U.S. aid funding annually to combat food insecurity and support climate resilience programs for 2.1 million people. A narrow dirt road snakes along the banks of a small river and leads to the remote village of Birirano. Marked by baobab trees and drought-tolerent shrubs, this small community is sandwiched between desolate mountains in Zimbabwe’s eastern district of Chipinge. Far from the main highway, it is largely cut off from the rest of the country and the world. With limited livelihood possibilities, villagers here have long been locked in an unending cycle of poverty. Over the...

It is not very common for Europeans to move to African countries. However, in the wake of the economic crisis of 2008 many Portuguese have sought a better future in former Portuguese colony Angola. Previously, many Angolans went to Portugal, but now labour migration is going in the opposite direction. Figures from 2014 show that between 100,000 and 150,000 Portuguese live in Angola and the migration does not seem to be subsiding. NAI researcher Lisa Åkesson is writing a book about this reverse migration. “The book has attracted a lot of attention, because it is a new form of migration...

BEIJING (Reuters) - China formally opened its first overseas military base on Tuesday with a flag raising ceremony in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, the same day as the People's Liberation Army marks its 90th birthday, state media said. Djibouti's position on the northwestern edge of the Indian Ocean has fueled worry in India that it would become another of China's "string of pearls" military alliances and assets ringing India, including Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

U.N. document reveals 2000 plan to push massive migration! Millions of migrants mostly from Africa and the Middle East have swarmed Europe in the last three years – the result of what has been explained by world leaders as a war-driven “refugee” crisis. Yet, a United Nations document, prepared in the year 2000 and rediscovered by WND, reveals the U.N. was already promoting the notion of “replacement migration” in Europe with the support of open-borders non-governmental organizations and “progressive” politicians. The document – “Replacement Migration: Is It a Solution to Declining and Aging Populations?” – details the plunging birthrates across...

Ghana has successfully launched its first satellite into space. GhanaSat-1, which was developed by students at All Nations University in Koforidua, was sent into orbit from the International Space Centre. Cheers erupted as 400 people, including the engineers, gathered in the southern Ghanaian city to watch live pictures of the launch. The first signal was received shortly afterwards. It is the culmination of a two-year project, costing $50,000 (£40,000). It received support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The satellite will be used to monitor Ghana's coastline for mapping purposes, and to build capacity in space science and technology.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has warned that Africa’s population explosion will overwhelm Europe unless the continent makes it more difficult for migrants to reach its shores. In an interview with the German Welt am Sonntag newspaper, Gates said massive population growth in Africa will result in “enormous [migratory] pressure” on Europe unless countries increase overseas development aid payments. Praising Germany having achieved its commitment to devote 0.7 per cent of GDP to foreign aid as “phenomenal”, the 61-year-old called on “other European nations to follow its example”. But Gates also spoke of a dilemma caused by ‘the German attitude to...

    News 24 ^ | July 1, 2017 | Frank Chikowore
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, 93, on Friday told unemployed youths to "go and herd cattle" in the rural areas amid a critical shortage of jobs in the southern African country. During his election campaign of the 2013 polls, Mugabe promised Zimbabweans that his government would create more than 2.2 million jobs. However, latest statistics indicated that Zimbabwe had a formal unemployment rate of around 80%. Addressing his supporters at a rally at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo, Mugabe said Zimbabwean youths who had no jobs should look for ideas so that they became entrepreneurs. “We always hear youths from the (opposition...

The White House usually picks a photo of the day. On June 28, the image they chose showed two girls from Nigeria who were abducted in 2014 by Boko Haram but managed to escape: Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu. They're flanked by President Donald Trump and his daughter, Ivanka Trump. The photo had been taken the day before. Trump is giving a thumbs up. The meeting was not publicized in advance. NPR's White House correspondent Tamara Keith says the administration didn't notify the press corps about it, it didn't appear on the White House daily schedule and it was not...
  • Stop being selfish: Why women in Central Kenya are being urged to embrace polygamy

The ‘single mother epidemic’ in Central Kenya has seen wazee advocating for the re-introduction of polygamy, a widely frowned-upon practice in the region. While men in Central Kenya are known to have mpango wa kandos, there are calls to re-embrace polygamy after Joseph Kaguthi, the head of Nyumba Kumi Initiative in the country recently caused a furore when he asked women to accommodate their husbands’ lovers as co-wives. Kaguthi, the one-time no-nonsense provincial administrator, told The Nairobian that one of the reasons he advocates for polygamy is because “it is selfish and inconsiderate of women not to share their husbands”....

Image from theguardian.com: In this widely circulated image of Aisha Gombi Bakari, you can see the homemade revolving shotgun that she uses to hunt Baka Haram Islamic terrorists.  The lock up does not look impressive, but it will do for a small number of shots.  The cylinder is probably turned by hand. There are index cuts to make sure it is lined up with the barrel.  Aisha is supposed to be paid about $25 a month, but the payments are spotty.  An official has recently been indicted on embezzeling 1.8 billion dollars marked for anti-terrorism efforts. That might explain...

German Development Minister Gerd Muller warned Sunday that up to 100 million Africans could head north as economic and climate refugees. Germany is making a push to promote peace and investment in Africa at the G20 summit in Hamburg in July. Muller believes unprecedented migrant populations could head for Europe if climate goals aren’t met and the economic outlook in Africa remains the same. “If we continue as before, people in many parts of Africa have no other chance than to get to us,” Muller, a member of the Christian Social Union, told German tabloid Bild am Sonntag. “If we...

Lupita Nyong'o, the Oscar award-winning actress, once said every dream is valid. It has become one of the most original quotations from Kenya. Without being so scientific, could we try to falsify this proposition and ask: Is the American dream valid? First, what is the American dream? The Collins Dictionary defines it as, “the notion that the American social, economic and political system makes success possible for every individual”. Another definition is “the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and initiative.” Kimberly Amadeo traces the term to...

Between Saturday and Sunday, some 2,850 African migrants were shuttled to Italy in 23 different rescue operations carried out by the Italian Coast Guard and various NGOs. Eleven different rescue operations were carried out Saturday, resulting in a total of some 1,200 migrants being brought to Italian shores, while on Sunday another 1.650 more were added to their number in the course of 12 different interventions. The operations took place amid a brewing conflict between the Libyan Navy and various NGOs. On Sunday, the Navy announced it had driven a number of NGO vessels out of Libya’s territorial waters and...

In a passionate speech on Feb. 28, 2017, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, encouraged members of South Africa’s Parliament to stand for radical change and take back their land from the whites. Malema encouraged the people to vote in favor of amending the constitution in order to allow the land to be expropriated without compensation. Whites originally took the land during colonialism and still own a majority of it. Malema incited Black people to fight against the white dominance and take back the land that is theirs. This Atlanta Black Star video highlights the EFF’s determined efforts...
