BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- Investigators in Germany have arrested a 24-year-old man on terror-related charges. Authorities arrested the man "on suspicion of spreading al Qaeda propaganda online and for procuring materials which could be used to make a bomb," prosecutors said Friday in a written statement. Searches of a flat in Offenbach, Germany, and a business in Frankfurt, Germany, turned up a small amount of an "explosive substance" and a home-made electronic device. An initial assessment suggests that the items "could be used to ignite explosives," prosecutors said. The man holds dual German-Turkish citizenship, they said. The statement from prosecutors...

new information about the Reuters Photoshop scandal: Reuters fired a top photo editor for the Middle East during an internal investigation of two doctored photos from the Israel-Lebanon war that were published last summer. The editor was the second casualty of the photo manipulation controversy surrounding Reuters freelancer Adnan Hajj. Two of Hajj’s photographs showed obvious signs of digital alterations. Facing a storm of criticism last August, Reuters terminated its relationship with Hajj and pulled more than 900 of his photos from its archive. A Reuters spokesperson said Thursday that the company would not release the name of the editor...

Adnan el Shukrijumah possesses the uncanny abilities to blend into a crowd, to alter his looks, and to assume a multitude of identities. He is the proverbial Mr. Cellophane. Few things about Shukrijumah indicate his radical Islamic orientation. He is often clean-shaven and never wears a long shirt or chews a toothpick. He has been known to have a beer on occasion (like an average American Joe), to smoke an occasional Camel, and to carry rosary beads in his pocket. He has posed as an Italian-American, a Mexican-American, a Canadian, a Saudi, a Jamaican, and a Latino from Trinidad. He...

Israel raid 'kills Hamas chief' A senior Hamas figure was among two militants killed in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials say. Medics say one of the men killed may have been Adnan al-Ghoul, a senior figure in militant group Hamas. Adnan al-Ghoul had been on Israel's wanted list for over 15 years, news agencies reports. There was no immediate word from the Israeli army, which has often targeted militants in missile strikes in Gaza. But Reuters quoted Israeli security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, as saying the air strike may have targeted Mr Ghoul....

Around 50 retired US diplomats have written to US President George Bush to complain about America's policy towards the Middle East. The letter is similar to one written by 52 former British diplomats to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair last week. The former US diplomats complained that President Bush's approach is losing the US "credibility, prestige and friends". They criticised what they say is Washington's unabashed support for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. The American diplomats said they were deeply concerned by Mr Bush's endorsement last month of Mr Sharon's plan to withdraw unilaterally from Gaza. 'Great danger' They were...

COALITION commanders were optimistic yesterday the battle for Saddam Hussein’s birthplace, Tikrit, could be won quickly. Unmanned Predator surveillance aircraft have flown over the last big Iraqi city not under coalition control and revealed few defences and no sign of the Adnan Republican Guard Division or regular army troops. Those left may not have much fight in them, said Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, a coalition forces spokesman at Central Command in Qatar. “We know there is still military equipment in Tikrit area off to the west and in the east,” he said. “It may be there is not much fight left...

THE family of an Iraqi man hauled from the vehicle of a UN inspector in Baghdad have appealed to Amnesty International to help to save him. Like television viewers around the world, Adnan Abdul Karim Enad’s relatives were shocked to see him clambering into a UN inspector’s jeep on January 25 clutching a notebook and screaming “Save me! Save me!” in Arabic. A UN inspector sat motionless in the front seat as Iraqi guards pulled the 29-year-old man out of the car and carried him away by his arms and legs. Abidalrahim Al-Nuimi, a relative living in America, said the...
