A meta-analysis has found a possible role for nutraceutical supplements in treating acne, one that will require better research practices to reveal their effectiveness. In a paper, the team reviews 42 articles encompassing various nutraceutical effects on acne. The collective meta-analysis included 3,346 participants across diverse methods and treatments tested. Zinc was the most studied nutraceutical, with approximately half of the studies showing efficacy, especially at higher doses. Zinc also had the highest rate of adverse effects, primarily gastrointestinal. Vitamins A and B5 showed some effectiveness. The vitamin dosages in the studies analyzed were often well above daily recommended use,...
  • Antibiotics for acne: Study shows why one works best (Zinc and/or sarecycline are helpful)

A new study brings precision to the understanding of which antibiotics work best for acne treatment and why. This is important for two key reasons. Acne affects nearly everyone at some point in life—it is, in fact, the eighth most common disease for all humans, affecting more than 85% of adolescents and young adults. And second, because antibiotics have long been an important go-to treatment for acne, dermatologists write more antibiotic prescriptions than any other specialty in medicine. Broad-spectrum antibiotics do not distinguish between good and bad bacteria, so they try to inhibit them all. In contrast, narrow-spectrum antibiotics target...

t was on a family holiday that Kali Kushner discovered, abruptly, just how others viewed her skin. “At the end of the day I washed off my makeup,” she recalls. “My nephew said: ‘Why is your face so dirty?’ It took me a minute to realise he saw my foundation as a ‘clean face’ and acne as dirt.” Soon after, Kushner, 23, from Cincinnati, Ohio, began documenting her struggle with acne on the Instagram account @myfacestory – her experience with the drug Accutane, dermarolling, makeup, scarring, hyperpigmentation, alongside all the ways people have responded to her acne, from her husband,...

A Florida man was arrested for popping zits on his back at a McDonald's restaurant, according to a report. Owen Lemire Kato of Port Charlotte stood in front of one of the entrances and repulsed customers by squeezing the pimples for more than 10 minutes, the police report cited by news-press.com said. Kato, 23, gave a fake name to an off-duty officer who tried to intervene, then gave his real name before bolting out of the restaurant, news-press.com reported. Another officer in the area heard the call go out, spotted Kato and tackled him after a brief chase on foot,...

A proposal to make preexisting health conditions irrelevant in the sale of insurance policies could help not just the seriously ill but also people who might consider themselves healthy, documents released Friday by a California-based advocacy group illustrate. Health insurers have issued guidelines saying they could deny coverage to people suffering from such conditions as acne, hemorrhoids and bunions. One big insurer refused to issue individual policies to police officers and firefighters, along with people in other hazardous occupations. Some treated pregnancy or the intention to adopt as a reason for rejection. *snip* Kristin E. Binns, a spokeswoman for parent...

Screaming and covered in blood, Demi Cuccia ran from her Monroeville home to the arms of neighbor Gayle Slomer. "I held my hand on her chest, trying to stop the blood from flowing out of her body. I cradled her and talked to her. I said, 'Stay with me, Demi. Stay with me,' " Slomer told an Allegheny County jury Tuesday. "She lifted her head, she must have seen John coming out. She screamed at him, 'Get away from me. I hate you. Get away from me. I hate you." She was running from John Mullarkey, her on-again, off-again boyfriend...

LONDON: Karl Marx, who complained of excruciating boils, actually suffered from a chronic skin disease with known psychological effects that may well have influenced his writings, a British expert said on Tuesday. Sam Shuster, professor of dermatology at the University of East Anglia, believes the revolutionary thinker had hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in which the apocrine sweat glands — found mainly in the armpits and groin — become blocked and inflamed. "In addition to reducing his ability to work, which contributed to his depressing poverty, hidradenitis greatly reduced his self-esteem," said Shuster, who published his findings in the 'British Journal of...

Online Video: Noted Endocrinologist Dispels the Myth of Health Benefits of the Pill - Part 2 By Elizabeth O'BrienOTTAWA, August 9, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The lecture of noted endocrinologist Dr. Maria Kraw, speaking at the Humanae Vitae Conference "A New Beginning" last year, described the serious medical risks involved in taking hormonal birth control. It also debunked the common myths of the so-called "health benefits" of the pill. She began by noting that one of the major risks of taking hormonal contraceptives is an increased risk of cancer. Looking at 54 studies of the pill, she observed that researchers found...

ACAPULCO, Mexico --A 14-year-old boy was detained after allegedly killing a 4-year-old girl because her father made fun of his acne, Mexican prosecutors said Monday. Yurani Yuliec Garcia Organes was killed on March 16 in the Pacific resort town of Zihuatanejo, where the victim and her father lived just a few yards from the boy's house. Authorities said the boy, who was detained Saturday, told police the girl's father had called him "graniento," or "zit-face."

FDA Puts New Restrictions on Accutane By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer WASHINGTON - The thousands of Americans who take the acne drug Accutane — and people who prescribe and dispense it — must enroll in a national registry, part of a major government program to tighten access to the medicine that causes birth defects. Food and Drug Administration enacted unprecedented curbs Friday in trying to keep Accutane and its generic competitors on the market while ensuring that women who use the risky pills don't get pregnant. Critics see it as the drug's last chance, after two decades of safety...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The activity of male hormones, androgens, can give rise to acne during adolescence, but may also protect against coronary heart disease in adulthood, UK researchers report. However, androgens also appear to be associated with an increased risk of dying from prostate cancer, the study in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests. "Androgen level or androgen activity is implicated in several health outcomes, but its independent role remains controversial." Dr. Bruna Galobardes, from the University of Bristol, and colleagues note. The investigators examined the association between history of acne in young men and cause-specific mortality in...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/health_acne_dc Study says acne drug does not cause depression CHICAGO (Reuters) - A popular acne-fighting drug that has been linked to birth defects and is being monitored for ties to suicide did not cause depression in a group of adolescents, a study said on Monday. Roche's Accutane, which is also sold in generic versions as isotretinoin, was given to 59 patients and their overall incidence of depression declined. There were only a few new cases of depression that showed up among those taking the drug, about the same as in a control group receiving a more conservative acne therapy, the...

Women who drink more than three daily servings of any type of milk are 22 per cent more likely to have suffered from acne. The study was based on responses to a survey from 47,335 women involved in an...

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a midnight showing of The Two Towers. What follows is my attempt at a spoiler-free review. Of three books of the trilogy, "The Two Towers" was always my favorite - I looked forward to the movie in fevered anticipation. I decided to throw caution to the wind and go to the midnight showing; I knew I would be hurting at work today (quick nurse, my caffine IV is low!) I was very surprised to get to the theater in our small city and find it utterly packed, my friend and I were...
