--SNIP-- This comes as two NYPD officers were yanked off the street Friday as cops and the Staten Island district attorneys investigated the stunning death of a suspect placed in a banned chokehold. The officers were slated for desk duty pending completion of the probe into Thursday’s death of Eric Garner, 43, as he was brought down by five NYPD officers outside a Tompkinsville beauty parlor. “Loss of life is always a tragedy,” said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton at a City Hall news conference. “Nobody began the day with the expectation it would end the way it did.

CLAIRTON, Pa. —A 17-year-old girl says she was beaten by police in Clairton after she and her friends were stopped for a curfew violation Wednesday night. Merceedez Wright admits she and her friends were out a few minutes after the city's 10 p.m. curfew, and that she both ran from officers and resisted them after being tackled, but she doesn't believe she deserves the injuries she suffered. "I didn't think cops would do that to me because I'm a girl. And I didn't have anything on me. I was just trying to walk away from the situation," Wright said from...

I remember growing up and always hearing my parents and their friends talk about one pivotal moment in their lives. They remembered exactly where they were at that point. Exactly who told them the news. Exactly how they felt once it all sunk in. When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, everyone who was alive during that time remembers. One year ago, today, was our generation’s moment. It was late on a Saturday night. Some of us were out to dinner. Some of us were home with our families. Some of us were still shopping. Some of us...

The Environmental Protection Agency has quietly floated a rule claiming authority to bypass the courts and unilaterally garnish paychecks of those accused of violating its rules, a power currently used by agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service. “The EPA has a history of overreaching its authority. It seems like once again the EPA is trying to take power it doesn’t have away from American citizens,” Sen. John Barrasso, Wyoming Republican, said when he learned of the EPA’s wage garnishment scheme.

Let's give him that one. After all, Officer Brett Olsen, the shooter...

As it turns out, a number of SWAT teams in the Bay State are operated by what are called law enforcement councils, or LECs. These LECs are funded by several police agencies in a given geographic area and overseen by an executive board, which is usually made up of police chiefs from member police departments -------------- Some of these LECs have also apparently incorporated as 501(c)(3) organizations. And it’s here that we run into problems. According to the ACLU, the LECs are claiming that the 501(c)(3) status means that they’re private corporations, not government agencies.
