<p>Mike Haynes remembers when he would have sounded a lot like Garrison Hearst.</p>
<p>There was the day Haynes swore at his mother, the first time he dared to treat her so disrespectfully. They were arguing about a homophobic insult he had tossed at one her co-workers, a gay man she considered a friend. She insisted that her son apologize. He refused. He was 14.</p>
