After the astounding victories by Republicans last night, it was only a matter of time until liberals tried to make sense of it all, while still not admitting that they were defeated. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC earned the gold medal for mental gymnastics last night, however, by claiming that Democrats “won the argument” when it came to their policies by… losing the Senate. This sentiment was then echoed on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC blog, in a post titled, “A Win? Yes. A Mandate? No.” The piece says that, with an overwhelming victory, Republicans will say the election was “an endorsement from...

As of just after midnight Tuesday night, Republicans had already gained a net seven Senate seats and control of the chamber, with Virginia likely going to a recount, Alaska pending, and a probable runoff win in Louisiana. Already it seems that they’ve gained at least a net of twelve House seats. Back in May, we felt there could be a Midterm Tsunami. In August we again speculated about it. But how did Republicans pull it off? Our last national poll, in October, showed that the president had significant disapproval – 56 percent of Americans disapproving of the job he’s doing...

Even as they turned against Obama and Democrats, voters also expressed scant confidence in Republican leaders, underscoring the increased pressure that Republicans will face to deliver next year when they control both houses of Congress.

Having emerged from an Election Day that many Republicans only dreamed of, the Senate Republicans’ campaign chairman was already looking forward to a Senate starting to function again. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., told a home state radio station that frustration with the lack of legislative activity contributed to his seeking the campaign job in the first place. “This place has been run, for the four years I’ve been in the United States Senate, with the goal of doing nothing,” the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee said on KNSS. “Boy, this place better change. It’s why I was willing...

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s re-election victory in a state that twice voted for President Obama instantly catapults him to the top tier of contenders for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, should he choose to run. But beyond the boost to his political career, his win also represents victory for conservative governance. When Walker took over as governor in 2011 after being elected during a wave election year for the GOP, he could have pursued the easy path, as Republicans often do — passing a few safe, small-bore policies without upsetting established order. Instead, facing gaping budget hole, he attacked the...

In addition to the GOP gains in the U.S., Senate, House and governorships it was an historic night for the party in state legislatures. Here is the summary by Tim Storey of the National Conference of State Legislatures: The Republican wave that swept over the states left Democrats at their weakest point in state legislatures since the 1920s. Everything went in the direction of the GOP as Republicans seized new majorities in the West Virginia House, Nevada Assembly and Senate, New Hampshire House, Minnesota House and New York Senate, The West Virginia Senate is now tied. Control of several legislative...

In an interesting coincidence, in a number of precincts, Republican Ed Gillespie received fewer than 10 votes. Yet, this was not because of a lack of eligible voters. Instead, Gillespie's opponent, Mark Warner, did extremely well in such precincts, drastically out-gaining his opponent. Warner went on to win. Added together, the precincts that Gillespie received 9 or fewer votes adds up to 98. In those same precincts, Warner received an astounding 5,657 votes. Even stranger is the fact that a number of these precincts were near each other and drastically favored Warner. In Newport News City, there were seven precincts...

Democrats on Wednesday morning began sorting through the wreckage of disastrous midterm elections in which losses eclipsed even their worst fears. The scale of the defeats, taken together, was breathtaking: a Senate majority lost, over a dozen House seats swept away, and Democrats ousted from governors’ mansions across the country. The drubbing is sure to spark a round of soul-searching as Democrats ponder whether President Obama is to blame — or whether something deeper has gone wrong in the party that could threaten its chances of retaining the White House in 2016. “This is where the administration has to take...

If President Obama suffered a “shellacking” in the 2010 elections, then what he endured Tuesday night was nothing short of a vicious gangland beatdown the likes of which have rarely been seen before in the history of electoral politics. This, of course, is a wonderful and well-deserved outcome. But beware: America now enters the two most dangerous years of her existence — or certainly the most dangerous since the Great Depression and possibly going all the way back to the Civil War. Not to dismiss the promising results of Tuesday’s election. Voters clearly and forcefully rejected the party, politics and...

President Barack Obama's home state of Illinois elected a Republican governor on Tuesday night. Massachusetts will have its first Republican governor since Mitt Romney. Stunning Republican victories came in reliably Democratic states, including those won overwhelmingly by Obama in 2012. Illinois ousted Democrat Pat Quinn in favor of Republican Bruce Rauner, while Maryland voters opted for Republican Larry Hogan over Democrat Anthony Brown. Republican Charlie Baker won a Massachusetts match-up against Martha Coakley, the state attorney general who lost a special Senate election to Scott Brown in 2010. Republicans also continued their dominance of governors' mansions when a number of...

Republicans scored a stunning electoral rout in the midterm elections, taking control of the U.S. Senate after a bitter campaign in which anger at Washington gridlock was turned against a president who took office promising to transcend it. Full article here ===================================================== Tonight we saw nothing short of a historic outbreak of mass sanity across America. Sooooo, to gloat or not to gloat. That's the question tonight. I'm leaning heavily against any gloating. It's not an easy decision because the shellacking the Democrats took across the country tonight -- a magnificent display of Democrats' Electile Dysfunction -- presents such a...

While it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of yesterday's victories, the only reason that we won so decisively yesterday was because a small group of DETERMINED REPUBLICANS in Virginia decided that the country couldn't take anymore of Eric Cantor, and somehow, beyond all expectations and all precedent, sent him packing to K-Street, on June 10, 2014. That set the stage for yesterday. Earlier, the US Senate had passed a horrendous Amnesty Bill (the prior summer, 2013), worse than anything than even Bush had pushed for. The House Leadership was ready to act on the advice of their...

Republicans stormed to victory in US midterm elections, thumping rival Democrats to clinch control of both houses of Congress and assuring a fractious final two years of Barack Obama's presidency. Riding a wave of voter frustration with Washington incumbents and the unpopular policies of the Obama administration, Republicans seized at least seven seats from Senate Democrats to claim total congressional control for the first time since 2006. "The American people have put their trust in the Republican Party," Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said shortly after the Democratic implosion. Mitch McConnell, the Senate's top Republican, brushed aside the toughest...

You almost never see this in politics. David Krone, the chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D), launches a major attack on the White House in this blockbuster story by my colleagues Philip Rucker and Robert Costa: At a March 4 Oval Office meeting, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and other Senate leaders pleaded with Obama to transfer millions in party funds and to also help raise money for an outside group. “We were never going to get on the same page,” said David Krone, Reid’s chief of staff. “We were beating our heads against...
