Republicans may yet win the elections in November. They may end up in control of both houses of Congress come January. But in the final week before a lengthy August recess, they have shown a remarkable capacity to complicate their path to victory.

Rally the base. Raise cash. You'd think the last thing any president would do is to constantly bring up his own name in connection with the idea of impeachment. It's not exactly a positive association. But why would that matter to President Persecution Complex? We're way past the point where anyone believed he could govern the nation effectively, so his only political play at this point is to make you feel sorry for him, and the way to do that is make the case that those mean old Republicans want to persecute him. How? By impeaching him! Obama is trying to...

The Defense Department’s inspector general will review the academic investigation of plagiarism allegations against Sen. John Walsh. The Montana Democrat is accused of not properly attributing certain material in a paper to complete his master's degree at the Army War College. Carol Kerr, the school’s spokeswoman, said it would launch an Academic Review Board to look into the matter. The results and any recommendations will be forwarded to the Defense Department IG for its “consideration.” The New York Times first reported last week that a review of a 2007 final paper suggests the decorated Iraq war veteran “appropriated at least...

Republicans on K street are helping members of their party shift their stance on gay rights issues. Kathryn Lehman, a top GOP lobbyist and partner at Holland and Knight carries a list of 40 to 50 Republican offices in the House and Senate she visits on behalf of Freedom to Marry, a group that backs same-sex marriage. "The issue is losing its toxicity from a Republican perspective," she said, mentioning that the list was a fraction of that size when she first took on Freedom to Marry as a client in 2011. Lehman... helped to write the Defense of Marriage...

July 29, 2014 Head of Benghazi probe says no witnesses off limits, including Clinton by Catherine Herridge The Republican head of the Benghazi Select Committee warned Tuesday that no witnesses would be off limits in its upcoming probe and that he would consider going to court, if necessary, to compel testimony. "I can't skip over a witness that I think we ought to talk to simply because there is an assertion of either privilege or immunity,"Chairman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina told Fox News in an exclusive interview. He said that while he has received good cooperation to date, and...

July 23, 2014 Rep. Carolyn Maloney United States House of Representatives 2308 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Ms. Maloney:alt It has recently come to my attention that you have levied baseless accusations against me to the Capitol Police and House Sergeant-at-Arms, claiming that I have “called for death threats against elected officials.”[1] Specifically, you alleged that “Mr. Pratt is actively encouraging his members to threaten violent action against members of Congress....” Your baseless charge apparently rests on your outlandish interpretation based on the Rolling Stone report on my comment, that “The Second Amendment is not for hunting,...

Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) denounced the House Republican border bill as a “surrender to a lawless president” because the legislation does not include any language to prevent President Obama from expanding his unilateral legalization of illegal immigrants. Here’s the statement: The Obama Administration has openly declared its plan to implement a unilateral executive amnesty for 5–6 million more illegal immigrants. This unlawful amnesty—urged on by congressional Democrats—would include work permits, taking jobs directly from millions of struggling American citizens. Any action Congress might consider to address the current border crisis would be futile should the President go forward with...

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Sunday did not rule out impeaching President Obama after he was asked three times by "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace. When first asked whether he would consider impeaching Obama, Scalise dove into a response pinning impeachment talk on the White House. “This might be the first White House in history that’s trying to start the narrative of impeaching their own president. Ultimately, what we want to do is see the President follow his own laws,” Scalise said. "The Supreme Court unanimously said 12 times the President overreached and did things he doesn’t...

Border Crisis: A new report shows the vast majority of unaccompanied minors aren't unaccompanied at all, have family members inside the U.S., are not victims of human trafficking and thus can be deported immediately. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois and other Democrats have repeatedly made the argument that Republicans shouldn't complain about the current border invasion since it was a 2008 law that automatically entitles minors from noncontiguous countries to asylum hearings before they face deportation. Gutierrez and his liberal colleagues in Congress and the media should read the law to find out what's in it. As the Center for...

When writing about politics, it's all too frequent to use terminology that often obscures more than elucidates. That's especially true when it comes to the word "wave"—shorthand for a landslide victory for the winning party. I've argued before that the likelihood of 2014 being a wave election has been rising, given the president's consistently low approval ratings and the fact that Republicans are running evenly on the generic ballot (which usually translates into a clear GOP edge) and that the right-track/wrong-track numbers are near historic lows. All these big-picture signs are ominous for the party in power.

Well, it seems “Papergate” just ensnared Montana Democratic Senator John Walsh. Mr. Walsh was appointed by Gov. Steve Bullock to replace outgoing Sen. Max Baucus, who decided to become the Obama administration’s Ambassador to China. Walsh is described by the New York Times as having something the Democrats lack in their political ranks: a seasoned military record. Walsh is a decorated Iraq War veteran, but his reputation might be marred by a final term paper he wrote in obtaining his master’s degree, where a substantial portion was written without crediting anyone (via NYT): An examination of the final paper required...

Rep. Wolf from Virginia made a speech yesterday at the House of Representatives in which forewarned the country on the current genocide of Christians in Iraq. He stated:Mr. Speaker, the international legal definition of the crime of genocide is found in article II of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. It says:Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the...

The notion that Elizabeth Warren should challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party presidential nomination has been optimistically tossed around in left-wing circles for a while now. Activists at Netroots Nation recently chanted â€Run, Liz, run.†And no doubt, the excitement generated by Warren is a function of her ideological sincerity—a sincerity thatÂ’s most obvious when contrasted with Hillary ClintonÂ’s lack of earnestness and pandering.Still, it seems to me that a lot of people are overestimating the appeal, uniqueness, and popularity of Warren. WhatÂ’s most enticing about Warren right now is the perception of her, not the reality. For starters,...

It’s a taboo subject among Senate Republicans but one that’s on many senators’ minds: What if Mitch McConnell loses his reelection bid? There appears to be no clear answer to that question, at least not right now. In interviews and private conversations with more than half of the 45-member Senate Republican Conference, there is a split over a potential McConnell successor. His top deputy, John Cornyn of Texas, is favored to succeed him, several GOP senators said. But others ranging from John Thune of South Dakota to Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander — or a dark horse — are among those who...

EXCERPT Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz from Texas were quick to pounce on the decision as one that reveals the Obama administration’s ongoing attempts to implement the law in a way that exceeds the parameters set in the law that Democrats themselves devised and passed. Cruz called the ruling a “repudiation of Obamacare and all the lawlessness that has come with it.” “The Obama administration, through the Internal Revenue Service, has attempted to dispense revenues to the states without proper congressional authorization, robbing Congress of its constitutionally-provided power of the purse,” Cruz said. “This decision restores power to Congress and...

Pew Research poll also shows Israel as staunchly pro-U.S. and most supportive of drones and surveillance in the fight against terrorists. A federal judge said Monday that Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) cannot challenge the Obamacare policy that lawmakers and their staff obtain health insurance through the exchanges. The ruling could prove ominous for House Republicans as they prepare to file suit against the Obama administration, also against Obamacare. That suit would focus on a different issue, the president’s delay of the employer mandate. Judge William C. Griesbach, a George W. Bush appointee, said that Article III of the Constitution prevents Johnson’s lawsuit from moving forward and suggests that any remedy must come from Congress. He said that the Wisconsin Republican cannot...

At a press conference in Peoria for former congressman Bobby Schilling, new House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy stated that the House of Representatives will pass measures in the coming days and weeks that will help secure the southern border with Mexico and that the thousands of illegal immigrant families will be reunited. Estimates are that 57,000 unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors have entered the US in the last few months, many coming believing that the Obama administration won't deport them and will instead grant them amnesty, and that doesn't even include the much larger number of adult illegal immigrants that have...
