Army picks new vehicle to replace the Humvee

(CNN)—The Army this week selected the company to build its much-anticipated new vehicle to replace the Humvee -- a multibillion dollar contract.

Oshkosh Corporation, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the $6.7 billion contract to produce the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will also be used by the Marine Corps.

The initial order will be for 17,000 vehicles, with production set to begin next year. The Army expects to have its first JLTV unit ready to go in fiscal year 2018, according to a release from the Army.

Oshkosh beat out two competitors for the final contract: defense giant Lockheed Martin and AM General, which manufacturers the Humvee. The tactical vehicle-maker will produce a two-seat and four-seat version of the vehicle, as well as a corresponding trailer.

I got out of the Army before the HUMVEE was in use.

Looks like it might be narrow enough to be carried aboard a CH-47 *Chinook* helicopter. Which the Hummvee wasn't.

The vehicle will be capable of traveling one terrain feature after having endured a single small caliber arms sized perforation to the fuel tank, engine oil reservoir, or coolant system.[48] It will be able to run on two flat tires.[48][49] The JLTV must also operate in altitudes from minus 500 feet to 12,000 feet and maintain full mission capability in temperatures from −40 to 125 °F (−40 to 52 °C), according to established requirements. When temperatures drop well below zero, the JLTV must start within one minute with no external aids, kits or prior warming of the batteries. The vehicle must be capable of traveling 350 paved miles at 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) or 300 miles (480 km) in operational terrain on a single tank of JP-8 fuel. Acceleration from 0 to 30 mph in seven seconds on dry, level, hard terrain is required, as is the ability to ford 60 inches (150 cm) of saltwater without a fording kit, in forward and reverse, while maintaining contact with the ground.[50] Other tactically driven mobility requirements include a 25-foot turning radius and the ability to climb 24-inch vertical obstacles in forward and reverse. JLTV must be able to drive off an 18-inch vertical step at 15 mph and sustain no mechanical damage. It will be capable of traversing a 20-degree V-ditch that is 25 feet wide at an approach angle of 45 degree. It can 'jump' a 6-inch parallel curb at 15 mph and traverse a 20-foot flight of stairs at 5 mph. It must climb a 60 percent dry, hard-surfaced gradient and traverse a 40 percent sideslope with no degradation in driver control.[50]

Humvees were GREAT in the woods. small trees were no problem. However, most of the time, I had to drive them on the road (National Guard weekend duty), and they were loud and uncomfortable.

Not much fun in the snow, either. The Humvee wasn't as bad about rolling over as the old Ford M151 series *roly-Poly* jeeps were, but when a 151 flipped, three or four guys could usually turn it back over. Not so with a Humvee, and it looks like this thing won't be any better- and it's got a high center of gravity too.

Of course it's not amphibious. When we come to a blue line on a map, that's where we stop to wait for the helicopter lift across.

Looks like a great little companion piece for the Stynker [officially, Stryker]

That will be a handy feature if the vehicle encounters a roadblock staffed by Revolutionary or Civil War soldiers equipped with single-shot muskets.

So, a total of 68,000 maximum possible troops will have these. For $6.7 billion I think the taxpayers could do much better.

If you’re talking those little (by modern standard) Jeeps based on the 1940’s design, those things are vulnerable to a IED using a 3/4” ball of any known plastic explosive like C-4, Semtex, etc.

The HMMWV was an improvement over the Jeep, but sucked as a garrison vehicle. I used a CUCV pickup truck around post (Bragg), and went to DS/DS with it, and got a HMMWV on returning. I still miss that ol’ “cut-vee” !

This monster will be definitely too much for garrison duty.

I guess I’m a little surprised. We already have the MRAP to move troops around - so I don’t see a HMMWV, or this new vehicle, being used in an assault. The vehicle is supposed to shuttle people around in rear areas. So I see this new vehicle as an admission that our fighting forces cannot secure their own rear areas. Part of our doctrine is to attack the enemy ‘in depth’ to leave the enemy no safe haven, not even rear areas...but it looks like the enemy has been able to turn the tables on us on the cheap, with IEDs. And our response is $400k people movers.

...When they worked. They were also rollover prone. I had three of these as a Wpns PLt Ldr for my mortar section. I was lucky to have one out of three operable on any given day.

Regarding the 2,000 or whatever number of Humvees that ISIS reportedly captured from the Iraqis. An officer friend of mine, who had 4 tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2011, he said there were easily 1-2,000 Humvee hulks left in Iraq by the US Army because they were just so much junk or the source for an occassional spare part when we pulled out in 2011. those Humvees were written off due to IEDs, other battle damage or wrecks.
