M-1 Garand Question

Posted on 03/13/2015 1:53:45 PM PDT by elder5

My Father in law passed away and left me his M-1. I'm ex-army (M-16 days) and other than the time I spent in the military I haven't had too many weapons in my hands.

The weapon is in great shape except for a small amount of rust in front of the rear site.

My question is how to remove the rust without damaging the weapon.

Thanks.

“WD40 takes rust off pretty well.”

The problem with WD40 is that there is water in the formula. That would create further rust.

Be sure to use the correct M1 Garand .30-06 ammo for it. Heavy hunting loads might be too much for it.

Correct. It likes 147 grain ammo. It can shoot heavier ammo, but if you get close or above 180 grains there is a probability of excessive bore pressure, the barrel can handle it, but the excessive pressure will cause the operating rod to slam home to hard and possible bend it. I have 3 garands, 2 in 30:06 and one barreled for 7.62-51, i.e. .308. Every time I fire them it brings a smile to my face.

In the 80’s Woolworth in downtown Houston sold them for $100.
I bought and sold so many the ATF paid me a visit.
Only got one left. Those were the days.

You got me. It’s a pain to post images from my iPad. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it.

Mate?

My Mates in the UK not only despise gun ownership, they think it’s barbaric.

Never mind that they need to buy a license to watch TV.

Tools from fools is no way to get the real work done.

Mate.

WD40 and #0000 grade steel wool

I put my 770 away in the case after a day of shooting and didn’t let it cool.

The handle on the bolt started rusting.

Took it to local gun shop and they recommended what I wrote above.

Worked...

What a great gift. But you must immediately go boating. Guns sink right to the bottom. Guns are dangerous and should not be in any houses period. Especially a military assault rifle like the M1 Garand.

That being said. If you have a piece of steel that needs some light rust removed a little elbow grease, some lightweight oil, and a scotch bright pad (I use the brown ones I have in my machine shop which are a lesser grit than green) will take care of it. Only rub as hard as necessary. You may find you hardly apply any pressure. Then, wipe off with a clean rag, I prefer flannel. You’ll then want to rub the entire piece of steel with some protective oil as well. Also, it would be a good idea to dissasemble the entire assmbly and clean and oil all the steel bits.

I have a paste called “Gun Brite” which is pretty good for removing rust. It is full of grit tho so it might not be exactly right for your purpose. If it gets into the sight it has a tendency to gum up the works.

I sometimes use a penny to remove rust. It leaves a copper colored smear but you can remove it easily with one of the blitz cloths.

Then I use Duro or some other rust converter. It turns the bare metal into a blackish looking coating. Then just cover it with 30 weight non detergent motor oil. Any other oil will work too but the 30 weight is really cheap and as good as anything I have tried.

Before you do anything to that sight, REMOVE it from the rifle first!!!

If the rust remove task goes afoul, at least the rest of the rifle will not be damaged. Replacement front sights are not very expensive. An original replacement does not detract from collector's value.

that thing kicks like a mule!

I was in basic training in 1958. When we received our first introduction to the M1, the Sergent giving the instruction put his handkerchief on the butt of the stock and then placed the M1 on his chin and fired it.

That was to show that the kick wasn't all that much.

I am sure it was part of the normal instruction as he didn't appear to enjoy it.
