I feel the same way.
I’ve seen this gradually increasing for years but it’s going full bore now, and they’re not really even disguised anymore.

Their parents raved that their kids were “finally reading” and dragged little kids to the midnight premier selling of every new book.

I would reckon that most are people who have opened themselves to dark spirits, knowingly or otherwise.

Add to that the bizarre impromptu Masque of The Red Death thing we’ve got going on, the silence in the stores, no more conversations, no more connections, no more infectious laughter from somewhere out of sight.
The stiff and suspicious posture of everyone, looking at everyone else like they’re possibly rabid.
The only expressions we see are the angry/frightened/paranoid eyes without a face.
It’s a breeding ground for creeping darkness.
