Miami Archbishop: Trump is “Archie Bunker Without the Charm”
Crux ^ | 1/12/18 | Christopher White

NEW YORK - President Donald Trump is “channeling Archie Bunker without the charm,” says Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami in response to Trump’s alleged comments that African nations are “sh*thole countries.”

Trump’s remarks are said to have come during a Thursday meeting with lawmakers regarding DACA and immigration reform.

Bunker is the popular 1970s sitcom character from the television show “All in the Family,” which often used bigoted remarks and salty language as a source of humor for the show.

In an interview with Crux, Wenski said the president’s remarks were “disappointing” and likely came in an effort to assuage his critics after holding a bipartisan meeting on Tuesday where he signaled a willingness to sign comprehensive immigration reform into law.

Following that meeting, the U.S. bishops issued a statement saying they were “encouraged” by its outcome and hoped the president would work “expeditiously” with lawmakers on the matter.

Wenski said that he actually believes there is a silver lining in the president’s actions on ending DACA and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in that it will finally force Congress into action.

“By rescinding DACA and ending TPS, he’s basically thrown the ball back into Congress, which is where the solution has always lied,” said Wenski.

“Both DACA and TPS were temporary solutions forcing people into limbo,” Wenski told Crux. “If Congress acts - and acts in a right way - the DACA people and TPS people will end up in a better position.”

Ok, seriously Mr. White, with your M.A. in Ethics and Society from Fordham University and a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from The King’s College, you apparently failed basic research:

Turns my stomach that a Catholic Bishop feels free to comment. As a Catholic. Must be modeling his ‘career’ on the Pope’s. ;(

ABp Wenski seems to be channeling Judas Iscariot without the coin purse.

I’m doubtful yet about the reports. There are a number of ways that something like this could have been attributed wrongly to Donald. As in a reference to someone else’s remarks that did include the word.

The problem with snap judgments is that they become easily unfastened. If a place is in a hell of a mess, that alone doesn’t tell us how it got that way, what the prospects are for a change (and what that change might be), or especially how the people there are weathering it or what it might be like if they came as visitors or immigrants to America. All those are conclusions being jumped to.

The banter seems to have descended to a schoolyard level. I really don’t believe Donald is that shallow. I thought at first he might have trotted the word out as rhetoric to provoke Democrats to reveal their own cards. And I’ve seen enough of how God has been using Donald to believe that could be a valid move. But I can’t see Donald lying on purpose here and now.

What happened to the old, well thought out, well pondered conservatism? If our dirty minded left has managed to spread its pollution to the minds of the right, then maybe something else has become, well, a pit for feces too.

With one very big difference.

African-Americans have gained more jobs as percentage of their population during 1st year of presidency than any other ethnic group.

Archie did not create a single job for African-Americans.

I always agreed with Archie Bunker. Donald Trump, however, is far more intelligent than Archie, has far more charm, is far wiser, and is a great president.

What's more, DJT is a *real* person....

Another pompous hypocrite bishop in the Catholic hierarchy. What a surprise. With the exception of abortion the Catholic hierarchy’s policy on everything could be lifted directly from the Democrat party platform or Karl Marx.

Sickening.
There is more pedophilia in Non-Catholic Churches than in Catholic Churches.

Check out the statistics.

Actually, I’d say that Norman Lear portrayed Archie Bunker as a guy, who underneath it all, was a decent person, but was programmed to be a bigot by his upbringing.

The message of All In The Family was that prejudice is learned behavior, which is why it’s so important to not expose children to bigotry.

On one hand, I think All In The Family was very nasty in it’s partisanship. Yet the fact that, in the end, Archie usually wound up doing the right thing, contributed to the show’s popularity, as viewers saw him as a complex and conflicted character.

If anything, Norman Lear may have questioned if viewers were sympathetic to Archie for the reasons he wanted them to be sympathetic, or if they simply cheered on his bigotry.

Hmm...Rob “Meathead” Reiner has yet to weigh in on the current s***storm debate.

And let’s remember that Carroll O’Connor was a flaming liberal determined to make Archie Bunker look evil. He must have suffered the same chagrin as Norman Lear as the audience laughed with Archie & not at him.
