Also, islam wasn’t the threat it became after the fall of the Soviet Union. I remember Gore Vidal writing that the fall directly influenced the rise of islam which was why he continued to support the iron curtain. He was a strange man, very left-wing, but sometimes he found his way to the truth.

Have you read Belloc’s predictions about the resurgence of Islam? His observations were prescient.

It is unusual for a Pole to appear accommodating to Islam. That may be because people of JPII’s generation saw communism as the primary threat.

And even canonized saints are not perfect human beings. Unfortunately, commentary like that in the posted article actually tends to support the current pope’s endless hectoring about rigid Catholics.

We have a contingent of them right here on FR.

Tell that non threatening Islam thing to the Christian majority population of Lebanon, who dwelt there before the Islamic war in the late seventies.

You not paying a thimble full of attention to Islam is not in any way, shape, or form the same thing as Islam not being a threat.

Winston Churchill recognized the potential threat in Islam and described it when JP2 was a young man. JP2 knew intellectually what Islam is, but still defended it.
