And even canonized saints are not perfect human beings. Unfortunately, commentary like that in the posted article actually tends to support the current pope’s endless hectoring about rigid Catholics.

Did you even read the full article? Because it wasn’t about JPII not being a “perfect human being”. It was a lot more involved than that. It involved his teachings, not just his questionable behaviors.
I’m more familiar with Belloc’s sister, Marie Belloc-Lowndes who wrote The Lodger. I’ll have to check him out.
