An Oregon couple who were forced to pay $135,000 after declining to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple had their first appearance before the Oregon Court of Appeals on Thursday, as they continue to fight back against the massive judgement.
Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, are arguing that the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries the state agency responsible for discrimination claims violated their religious liberty, due process and free speech, after forcing the bakers to pay $135,000 to the lesbian couple at the center of the dispute.
The Klein v. Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries case was argued before a three-judge panel on Thursday, with conservative legal firm First Liberty Institute which is representing the Kleins arguing that the government should never force someone to violate their conscience or their beliefs, according to a press release.

I hope the climate in America has shifted and this family will obtain justice.
How is $135,000 justified?
Tort should be limited to damages. As I understand it, there were many bakeries there that could have baked the cake, and they went to many of them, until they found one that wouldn’t...
Those people should be REIMBURSED FOR DAMAGES and the gay couple forced to pay
Reminds me of Soviet Russia.
The penalty does not fit the “crime,” as there was none. Don’t know who is representing this couple, but there are a number of Christian law groups who should. The Rutherford Institute is one among many others. This is a travesty. If they have come this far, they should not pay it until every appeal is exhausted, and even then refuse.
Being forced by the ****ing government to bake a cake for a sexual deviant. This isn’t America anymore. It’s nothing but a third world sewer with a tyrannical “government”.
Where are the Christian groups at? Probably more concerned about the welfare of Muslim refugees than they are at helping their fellow man.
Is there a Go Find Me account?
That’s why I hate fags. and their supporters. 8 years of this crap.
It will go to SCOTUS and be overturned. But what happens to the 135k?
The claims of the couple who sued were ridiculous and would have been laughed out of any court not of the kangaroo variety.
Do you mean
“Go Fund Me”??
Even if they win, they’ll probably wind up paying that much in legal fees and still be ruined.
I will bake a cake, on behalf of the people that are forced by BIG GOVT INC. to bake said cake. Call me, and I shall make it so.
Tell me about it. I owe the IRS thousands for failure to file forms for businesses that made no money. In one case I showed that the form was mailed on time, but was sent to the wrong IRS office. I also showed that their instructions say the form need not be filed if there was no income and I took no deduction for a loss. It didn’t matter to them. My only recourse is to pay up (I can’t) and go to tax court. We are a nation of petty laws and Byzantine regulations enforced without mercy on the middle class, and major felonies that are overlooked for the privledged rich and favored special groups.
They can subcontract it out.
Sugar? Salt? They taste the same to me. LETS BAKE SOME CAKES!
As 'Salvation' wrote - you meant 'Go Fund Me'.
The answer is that there used to be.
Melissa, Baronelle (a Christian Florist), and some Pizza shop that refused to overtly support some Sodomite celebration, initially had Go Fund Me sites, but then the 'Go Fund Me' owners decided to go the anti-Christian route and support the Sodomites and they pulled the plugs on the Go Fund Me links to support Christians who wanted to follow their conscience.
Franklin Graham then set up a category in Samaritan's Purse where you can support persecuted Americans (such as Melissa, and others).
We don't use Go Fund me any longer. I don't want money going to enemies of Christians.
