Pope: Eternal Damnation "Is Not a Torture Chamber", but Being Eternally Distant from God

Never talk with the devil, he is a "liar" and "swindler", "seeking our ruin" and for "this will be thrown into the abyss." If "we open our hearts", as Jesus asks us, and we do not go our way, we will have "joy and salvation."

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - Eternal damnation "is not a torture chamber," but distance for ever from God, from the "God who gives happiness". But if "we open our hearts," as Jesus asks us, and we do not go our way, we will have "the joy and salvation” said Pope Francis at Mass this morning in Santa Marta, inspired by the reading from the Book of Revelation. In the last two days of the liturgical year, in fact, the Church fulfills the reflection on the end of the world.

The Pope’s homily focused on the day’s reading from the Book of Revelation that describes how the angel seizes the serpent, chains it up and throws it into the abyss which is then locked and sealed. He said the serpent or devil is thrown into the abyss “so that it would no longer lead the nations astray” because it is the seducer. “He is a liar and what’s more is the father of lies, he generates lies and is a trickster. He makes you believe that if you eat this apple you will be like a God. He sells it to you like this and you buy it and in the end he tricks you, deceives you and ruins your life. ‘But father, what can we do to avoid being deceived by the devil?’ Jesus teaches us: never converse with the devil. One does not converse with him. What did Jesus do with the devil? He chased him away, he asked his name but did not hold a.......

Being pope sounds fun. He gets to pull doctrines out of his bottom whenever he wishes. Like Joseph Smith without all the ladies.

Who needs women when you all those priests and cardinals.

It's surreal. It's Bergoglio talking about himself, and not even realizing it.

God CANNOT be absent from Hell, otherwise He is no longer omnipresent. Christ was in Hell for three days, so Hell cannot be an “absence of God”. God, in some form or other, must exist in Hell, just not his divine/human part of the Son who will be at the “wedding feast”. How all this is possible is a mystery of how the Trinity works. But it must be so otherwise people are not longer accepting fundamentals of the nature of God and moves one to heretical beliefs. And refusing to believe this rejects what scriptures teaches.

But I agree with Fai Mao that Hell “is the place that unbelievers desire to be”. The rich man who went to hell in Jesus’ story never asked to be removed from his situation. What we don’t understand is the depth of sin in our lives that would cause us to want to reject love, truth, joy, peace, etc. Some people would rather reign in hell than to serve in heaven.

Only problem there is that “Jesus” is not his name; his name is Yeshua. It means Yah saves.

Jesus is a transliteration of an acronym of a Rabbinical curse against his name. YSHU stands for Yemach Shimo Uzikro, which means may his name be forgotten and never recalled.

The Greeks add an s to the end of translated names, thus it became YSHUS. The J of Europe is the same as our Y so JSUS was often how it was applied.

I thought that your post meant that you were hoping for a bearable Hell.

The word says that it will be horrible torment.

“SAD that so many Christians are WITHOUT Jesus here on earth, isn’t it?”

Once again, I refer to the video posted of the woman hitting a baby. I tried to explain this. When we view or even think of such things, our minds turn numb. We can’t even think about it.

The truth is, that this is a prime example of Jesus’ love for all of us.

Growing up, before finding, thanking and falling before Jesus I thought I knew love. My parents love me, I mean my parents love me in the truest sense. I knew what it was to be loved, but I’m talking about loving another.

I was enamored with girlfriends, I said I loved them. And at the time I truly thought I did. If you were to tell me then what I know now, I would have scoffed.

The truth is that I didn’t know what love was until I knew that Jesus loved me (and you) so much that he died on the cross for us. And he died in a horrible, violent way. He did it for me (And you). After feeling that love I knew then that what I felt for others may be respect - it may be passion but love is what I feel for my wife and daughter right now. It’s what I, in return, now feel for my older family as well.

I would have died for my exes. Sure I would have. Honestly, I would die for you all too. But I would march in and kick the doors to hell down for my wife and daughter.

I’ve dated wildly attractive women in my history. I’ve had fast-paced, respectful relations with them as well. I’ve hurt them, and they’ve hurt me. It wasn’t until I met my wife, and fell to knees before Jesus that I knew what love was.

That woman who hit her child thought (or at least claimed) to be teaching the baby a lesson. This woman didn’t think she was being evil. While I can’t attest to every aspect of this horror, I can tell you where it did NOT begin. It did NOT begin with the love of Christ.

When one understands the love of Christ, they too understand that to keep up with the love of Christ they will always fall short. But they will understand at least what love is, and strive to give it. And not give it for their own reward, nor for the reward offered at Jesus’s side in heaven - But to give it to another because that kind of love is for all, and people deserve to feel that love.

Most will never comprehend Hell ... and I don’t expect them to even come close because only a small percentage of people understand the love of Jesus Christ. And without that, one will never understand the rest. They will never understand an existence without God because they don’t understand an existence WITH God.

It is a mystery, we are not told much, so there is much speculation.

Many of us whether we know it or not get our ideas about hell from cartoons we saw as kids. We think Satan reigns in hell and administers souls as they come down there.

But if we really think about it, the one who administers and is in charge of hell is God. That is a scary uncomfortable thought, but he is sovereign or he is not.

I think H*ll is a personal punishment, that comes from disengagement from G-d. I think I just repeated what you said.

Catholic Dictionary

HELL

The place and state of eternal punishment for the fallen angels and human beings who die deliberately estranged from the love of God. There is a twofold punishment in hell: the pain of loss, which consists in the deprivation of the vision of God, and the pain of sense, which consists in the suffering caused by outside material things. The punishment of hell is eternal, as declared by Christ in his prediction of the last day (Matthew 25:46), and as defined by the Fourth Lateran Council, stating that the wicked will “receive a perpetual punishment with the devil” (Denzinger 801). The existence of hell is consistent with divine justice, since God respects human freedom and those who are lost actually condemn themselves by their resistance to the grace of God.

I think the lake of fire is part of that chaos that God’s presence is not there to protect from. I do believe there is a lake of fire.
