Twelve Things that Caught My Eye about Pope Francis’s New Document on Love and Marriage and Family

By KATHRYN JEAN LOPEZ April 8, 2016

For search-engine optimization, I thought about titling this post: “What Pope Francis Has to Say to Kim Kardashian about Her Dad Caitlyn.” I didn’t, but I imagined had Pope Benedict XVI issued the document Pope Francis did on marriage and family and society and accompaniment and reconciliation, the headlines might have read a lot differently, even with the same text. (I also never would use that title because while it might work on Google it’s not the most welcoming — and so much of what Pope Francis does here and elsewhere is try to open a door to those who feel distant from the Church in the prayer that they might come to encounter Christ and be open to reconciliation.)

I remember when his apostolic exhortation on “The Joy of the Gospel” was released thinking it a shame that most people, relying on headlines and soundbites for their information, missed both the joy and the Gospel in it. I hope the same doesn’t happen here. This is in no way a comprehensive list, but here are twelve things that caught my eye in my early-morning read of the 250+ page document, Amoris Laetitia (“The Joy of Love”).

Sorry, but this Pope is to God what Sotomayor and Kagan are to the Constitution...

The Catholic church has been filled with queers for years.
How many millions have they had to pay to victims now?

The Church has always supported all mankind
The Church has always supported gays - it just never supported their sinful behavior .
All mankind is sinful,.. and mankind has a problem just keeping the TEN COMMANDMENTS
Can you imagine if the commandments were tougher and more difficult to keep ?
Moses came down with a previous set of commandments, and destroyed them ,since mankind couldn't keep them
What we have is the 'watered-down' version , and we have difficulty even keeping those !

That’s true. But that said, most of this 220+ page document was simply platitudes and or resayings of what has been said - and more clearly - a million times before. But the Pope thinks that somehow because he says it, it’s new and cool.

However, the real problem with this document is the last few paragraphs, which talk about “inculturation” and basically seem to say that while all of the foregoing may have been well and good, if the “cultural situation” doesn’t favor it, you can do whatever you want; and also, the Jiminy Cricket message, where your “conscience” (you know, the little voice that tells you, “if it feels good, do it”) is supposed to take primacy over the teachings of the Church.

Remember, we must always be kind and never mean to people spitting your face with their HIV-positive saliva.

Did not the original set of commandments get smashed?

Biggirl :" Did not the original set of commandments get smashed? "

Yes !! Moses came down from the mount, having been gone for quite some time, and saw the Isrealites worshiping the 'Golden Calf', a form of pagan idolatry .
He chastised the Israelites, destroyed the first set of commandments given by God , and returned to the mount.
When he returned , he had in his possession ,the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments, as we now know them , inscribed in stone.
The original, first set of commandments from God had been destroyed by Moses, as the Israelites were seen to be too weak to follow God's original commandments.

Another example of the after effects of lack of leadership that we are experiencing, even today .
Those who ignore the history of the past are destined to repeat history, again.

Yeah, let's criticize him for that. Dumb outdated doctrine! Same old same old.

And if he didn't do this, that'd be bad, too!

From The Guardian:

"LGBT rights groups in the US said on Tuesday that Pope Francis’s document on family values fell short of already low expectations."

The problem is that buried in with these platitudes and citations of lightweight 1960s authors were some real depth cheated that essentially rejected the idea of objective truth and morality.

Want to hide something? Bury it under 60,000 words.

Gotta agree with you on that. As soon as I saw Amoris L. was going to run to more than 250 pages, I said to my husband, “It must take a couple hundreds pages to find a way around Matthew 19:9.”
