A Russian orthodox priest blesses a SU-27 SM fighter jet on the airfield of Belbek military airport outside Sevastopol

The Russian Orthodox Church has backed the country's parliamentary decision to give President Vladimir Putin permission to use military force in Syria, saying the fight against terrorism is a "holy war".

The head of Synodal department for church and society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, told journalists on 30 September that the decision from the upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, to authorise air strikes in Syria was "consistent with international law, the mentality of our people and the role that our country has always played in the Middle East", according to Interfax news agency.

He added that Russia cannot be indifferent while Christians and other minority groups are being destroyed in the region. The interreligious council of Russia released a statement in support of military operations against terrorism in the Middle East. "The fight against terrorism is a holy struggle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world to combat terrorism," the priest said.

This has absolutely nothing to do with fighting terrorism.

Bookmark for fact check over time.
All the players are gathering near Israel while our leaders in power over us (not for us) have turned and betrayed them. That is all we know for sure right now.

I have often wondered how long it would take for the RUSSIANS to start protecting the Russian Orthodox believers in the ME.
Since our worthless hide has chosen not to do anything the RUSSIANS have filled the vacuum while our “boy” plays golf.

“I have often wondered how long it would take for the RUSSIANS to start protecting the Russian Orthodox believers in the ME.”

And how many “the Russian Orthodox believers in the ME” do you really think they are? There are a few monasteries in Israel and that’s about it.

Why should the Pope say it, was he elected Commander of Chief of the United States, the King of England and PM of England, the chief authority of the Protestant church of England, the PM of Germany, France, etc, etc.

Popes gave up secular authority long time ago, and while it was necessary in the context of the fall of the civil Authority in Rome and the West in the 5th century, and was needed for a time after that to hold Western Europe together under the banner of Christendom, the rise of Nationalism in the 14th and 15th century put an end to it.

The Pope’s Job is to profess the Creed and preach those truths, not lead militaries.

"sorry about the double post"

What you said needs to be repeated, often. Funny how the same people who yell, "STFU, don't meddle in our affairs" at the Pope when they disagree with him turn around yammer about how he should be very vocal in agreeing with them.

Millions of Muzzies all over India, the Philippines, and SE Asia as well as in the Middle/Near East would take sides and support the jihadist scum if the Pope came out forcefully and agreed with the Muzzie propaganda that the Holy War has started. The only thing it would accomplish would be fanning the embers in places where they smolder so that those embers turn in to open flames.

The Russian Orthodox have been in the sights of the Muzzies since the Soviets went into Afghanistan and what Russian clerics say is nothing new or earth shattering. The Russian Orthodox clergy have been calling the fight against Jihadists a Holy War ever since '96 when Chechens beheaded a soldier for refusing to remove the cross he wore and much more frequently since Beslin '04. There's a big difference between their saying we're already in a Holy War and the Pope calling for a Holy War.

Rashputin:

Lets be honest, all these people here yelling for the Pope to call a Holy War, most are Hardcore Protestants, who can’t stand the Chatholic Church to start with. So they are saying for the Pope to call a Holy War as if they are going to listen to him????????????????????????????????????????????????? Yeah right! On another note, lets say the Pope did in fact call one, how many here who are Protestant, and again, most here on FR are hard core Prots, are going to say yep, the Pope, the Bishop of Rome called for a Holy War, and then get on the next plane to the Middle east and go fight.

I am Catholic and if he called one, I would not go. Calling for Military options is not in the realm of Faith and Morals. That is decision that rests of with Political leaders. The best thing, imo that could happen is for Iran and Shia Iraq join with Syria and fight the Sunni idiots on the other side of the Muslim divide. Let them kill themselves, why should anymore American Kids die for those idiots.

And as for the Russians, this was called by Putin, the Orthodox Patriarch gave it moral cover, so to speak. Politically, there are some 2,000 Russian speaking Islamist fighting in Syria for ISIS or the anti-Assad forces, when and if those guys go back to Russia, could really be an issue. So I can totally see Russia taking action, but I also see them using this to gain access to ports and Oil reserves, etc by supporting Assad.
