Gay marriage will split the Catholic Church
The Spectator ^ | 05-23-2015 | Damian Thompson

Ireland, for so long the most overtly Catholic state in Western Europe, has voted for gay marriage by a stupendous margin – 62 per cent. Never before has a country legalised the practice by popular vote.

It would be naive to ask: how could this happen? Hatred of the Church is one of the central features of modern Ireland, thanks not only to the paedophile scandals but also to the joyless quasi-Jansenist character of the Irish Church, which was handed complete control of education in the Free State after partition in 1922. (Many of its priests were outstandingly holy and charitable, but you’ll get your head bitten off if you suggest that in today’s anti-clerical republic.)

Anyway, I don’t want to focus on Ireland. Homosexuality as an issue is a greater threat to the Catholic Church worldwide than the sex abuse scandals. Here’s why:

Homosexual marriage will cause schisms in other religious denominations as well.

By this time next month, we may well have seen the U.S. Supreme Court impose homosexual marriage nationwide.

If that happens, the goal posts will then have been moved.

The vast majority of mainstream religious institutions do not allow for homosexual marriage, or homosexual commitment ceremonies, or recognize homosexuality in a positive way. On the other hand, many religions regard homosexaulity as sinful or worse.

The next battle over homosexual marriage could happen within churches. Some more liberal churches may want to recognize same sex marriage, and break away from denominations which don’t allow it. Other denominations may decide to allow it, but see some more conservative member churches split with them over the issue.

And, in the background, there’s always the possibility that the gay activists, who brought us to the point we are at now, with the numerous lawsuits over marriage, will start suing churches which don’t perform homosexual marriage.

If the Supreme Court imposes homosexual marriage on the entire country ,this will not be the end of the debate over homosexual marriage. Instead, it will just have moved the goal posts on the issue.

The Catholic Church has always been open to being split as are the protestant denominations, it calls to question for me what foundation are they really built upon.

The pedophile scandal was mainly caused by homosexuals in the church.

Christian morals under attack by those anti-Christians who support homosexuals which consist of only 1% of the population, not 10 or 20% as claimed.

By Catholic, can I assume you are referring to Roman Catholics?

"Gay marriage will separate the sheep and goats."

Given the Holy Bible’s condemnation of same-sex sexual relationships as evidenced by Romans 1:25-27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, and let’s not forget Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 10:15, gay marriage is certainly separating the sheep from the goats.

In fact, Luke 12:25 shows that Jesus claimed to to bring division on the earth, not peace.

The misguided Catholic Church is mixing the good news of Jesus with the empty traditions of men, imo, which Jesus warned against in Mark 7:7-13.

Ireland, for so long the most overtly Catholic state in Western Europe ...

This whole article starts off with a very misleading sentence. The practice of Catholicism has been fading in Ireland for generations. I was surprised to see an interview with an Irish priest a few years ago in which he said many of the churches in Ireland are empty, and that weekly Mass attendance is probably more prevalent in the U.S. than in Ireland.

“By Catholic, can I assume you are referring to Roman Catholics?”

Well I am pretty sure that is what the author of the piece was referencing. Do you think he was talking about the Amish?

"The Catholic Church has always been open to being split as are the protestant denominations, it calls to question for me what foundation are they really built upon."

I 'd liketo comment on this, but I'm not sure quite what yuou mean by it. So I'd liket o give you a chance to explain.

What do you mean by "has always been open to being split"? Do you mean it has always been possible to split from the Catholic Church, i.e. there is no way to stop people walking out, they will walk out if they want to"?

Or do you mean "The Catholic Church's response to internal splits is just to go on tolerating them, i.e. you can deviate on any point of faith and morals you want to, and still be a member of a parish, receive the Sacraments and call youself a Catholic"?

Or do you mean something else?

Thanks for any clarification.

Well the Presbyterians just voted gay marriage in here in the US.

Remember in Ireland it was not the Catholic Church that voted in gay marriage it was the people.

"The misguided Catholic Church is mixing the good news of Jesus with the empty traditions of men."

This would be true with the addition of s few little words:

"The misguided in theCatholic Church are mixing the good news of Jesus with the empty traditions of men."

In other words, the misguided in the Church (or in any denomination) mix the Good News and empty traditions; however, the faithful in the Church do not.

Do you see what I'm getting at?

My King James has the business of divider at Luke 12:14 (you should be more specific about the version you are reading). Anyway, the context was about dividing an inheritance and not the broader conflict you infer. However, in my King James, Matthew 10:34-37: Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. An a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

In the whole of Romans 1, First Corinthians 6, and Matthew 10 I find no reference to homosexuality. Please be more specific about the Biblical prohibitions; I am sure they exist -- but not where you cite them.

Right. It will "split" nothing.

Well, there is a distinction to be made between "empty traditions" and "Sacred Tradition." For instance, one of the most important things we all have (I mean, all Christians have) from Tradition, is the Bible, and the Canon of the Bible in particular.

Ponder what St. Paul means when he says,

1 Corinthians 11:2
"I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you."

And -- tagline ---

The Church has been headed toward a serious schism for quite some time now. Hardcore leftists now dominate Church administration.
