Living together or gay marriage
vanity | 04/01/2015 | ealgeone

For discussion purposes....

Pretend you own a bakery, or pizza place, et. The area in which you work is also one in which you live close by. You know your customers. You are a Christian.

A young man and woman are living together in the apartment above yours. You see them a couple of times a week and even say hello.

They come into your business and want to order a cake with the following inscription:

TWO YEARS TOGETHER

You know they're not married.

Do you bake the cake?

What say you Fellow Freepers

Just bake the silly cake and stay out of your customer’s personal lives.

I agree, but from a Christian perspective....is living together any worse of a sin than homosexuality?

From my pastoral experience, I can tell you that a couple living together approaching the Church for marriage is a pastoral opportunity but that homosexuals approaching the Church for marriage is not.

Heterosexuals living together are far more likely to repent of their error once properly catechized. Homosexuals are not.

The difference I see is that this cake could lead to marriage, a sacramental union between a man and a woman. JimRob nailed it, a same sex “marriage” is an unholy union in the eyes of God.

I agree!

That’s right, I posted on how goofy your vanity is.

Was that the purpose of it, for people to mock you and tell you that your vanity sucks?

That's where I was going with this.

We are all sinners in need of salvation. If I recall, James said if you stumble in one part of the law you've broken all of it.

Back for another post on this goofy vanity? Mock away....doesn't bother me one bit. You've failed to see the point of the discussion though.

Hey, it's a slow night....just throwing out a topic for conversation.

There is only one sin that is worse than the others. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit, if memory serves.

There is only one sin that is worse than the others.

The Catholic perspective: There are four sins which cry out to heaven for vengeance.

murder of the innocent
defrauding a worker of his wage
oppression of the widow and orphan

And sodomy.

I’ve been sitting in my church for 90 minutes waiting for the opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation, and there’s still 8 rows to go. It’s given me plenty of time to reflect, and now my prayers turn to the six priests hearing at least 400 confessions tonight. It’s an awesome experience!

The question is whether or not the baker is a free person or not. Is he a slave?

A sin is a sin, regardless. I wouldn’t deny business to gays even if they told me it was for a gay wedding, nor would I deny for the living-together couple. The sin is on them, not me. The only reason they would say anything is to get a reaction. I don’t need to know.

I would just have to change the rules: I wouldn’t put toppers on ANYONE’S wedding cakes/recognition cakes. The fee for set up would be hefty. I would find other ways to help out the non-sinners. ;)

I willingly do it and do a good job of it.....together two years has no official religious meaning whatsoever. I may not approve of their lifwstyle, but I have no idea, nor am I willing to judge, that they are not roommates.....Married, however, is an entirely different situation...a marriage is, indeed, a religious commitment and if Fred and George want to get “married”, they can do it elsewhere..

There’s plenty of ways to skin this cat, and you’ve outlined several.

My mother-in-law went to tenebrae tonight and said they’re still hearing confessions at my parish. I am especially moved when confessions are heard during liturgical services, like tenebrae or stations... or dare I say even Holy Mass.

Good Friday is practically upon us, but at least we know Sunday is coming.

“You presume they’re getting married....they’re just celebrating two years of living together.”

Before the 20th century people that lived together for two years would be considered to be in a common law marriage.

Benjamin Franklin had this type of marriage. All it meant was that the couple did not have a church wedding.

This is still the case in many states. People that live together for a period time, have joint lease or bank account or other acts or actions where they act like a married couple are in fact considered to be married.

I had a secularist friend that found this out the hard way when his live in girlfriend of 7 month walked out and sued him for community property. Surprise! He lost 1/2 his assets.

Don’t get me wrong. I want moral people but it is not a job of the state to tell you you are married. Marriage is a religious sacrament. I have no problem with people not obtaining a marriage license from the state. In fact if the state issues “Marriage licenses” for homosexuals then I believe that Christians should not such a license. Have a religious ceremony but don’t participate in the state’s sin.

Homosexuality is not even in the same league as couples “living together”

What’s wrong with “Two years together”?

Better yet, what’s wrong with saying “I don’t do same-sex weddings, whether you are gay or straight”?

Here's my question....is living together outside of marriage with no intention of marriage any worse of a sin than being homosexual and wanting to get married? Trust me....I'm not in the LGBT camp by any stretch nor am I advocating (no pun) for their position.

i get your question, and i do think it fits... i do not get why so many refuse to answer you...

The baker shouldn’t have to service anyone he doesn’t want to. Freedom of association. Guaranteed in our Constitution.

I can bake you a cake but I cannot decorate it the way you wish, for I feel that would put me in a position of helping you celebrate enjoying conjigal relations without being commited to one another in marriage, and it is my understaning that in the eyes of a loveing God, that sin... but I do love you guys and I’m praying that you decide to tie the knot... and if you do decide to get married, I’ll do your cake for free.
