Renowned biologist E. O. Wilson has said we should eliminate religions for the sake of human progress, as they are "dragging us down".
In an interview with New Scientist, Wilson was speaking about his latest book The Meaning of Human Existence, in which he questions religion, how humanity looks for common cause, our behaviour and our impact on the environment.

He said that he is not an atheist or agnostic, instead explains "I'm a scientist".
"Humans everywhere have a strong tendency to wonder about whether they're being looked over by a god or not. Practically every person ponders whether they're going to have another life. These are the things that unite humanity.
"This transcendent searching has been hijacked by the tribal religions. So I would say that for the sake of human progress, the best thing we could possibly do would be to diminish, to the point of eliminating, religious faiths. But certainly not eliminating the natural yearnings of our species or the asking of these great questions."

i am still dumfounded by the Orwellian narcissism: I am a scientist, not an atheist, but i want to get rid of religion.
No one can be righteous if one is less righteous than the scribes and pharisees... in other words, he is not the standard.
What this author is peddling is the concentration of power in the hands of the few—as you pointed out, we see the murderous outcome this has brought and will bring to innocent people. What he fails to comprehend, is that all living things will die, and that includes the earth. This is a basic tenet of life. I am a scientist and I will die, he too will die, and this living planet and it’s sun will die.
Who are the enemies of religion? Those who hold power, those holding power include the 2% of the population that worship deviant sexual behavior—the pervert alliance.

Thus again, he is an atheist who forgets that atheists have killed far many more other atheists than the religious have.
In fact many converted after being persecuted by atheists when atheist themselves, seeing Christ on the cross, that the flesh and material in no way shielded God, but only justice could if it were available.

One way scientists can measure the competitive advantages of religion is by examining the winning records of sports teams that are religious and pray before and during games vs. those that are atheistic. Teams sports are really a form of practice tribal warfare. Religious sports teams generally outperform teams from non-religious organizations of similar talent. The God Advantage is a real thing that can be measured by scientists in the physical world.
One reason the Neanderthals were not competitive against the Cro Magnons and went extinct is that the Cro Magnons were religious and the Neanderthals were not. The atheists already had their trial run on Earth and lost.
