PopeWatch: Deviant Forms of Religion

“Those who annoy Allah and His Messenger – Allah has cursed them in this World and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating Punishment. Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City, desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time: They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain (without mercy).”

— Quran 33:57–61

Pope Francis believes that he understands what motivated the terrorists who slew twelve in Paris last week:

Pope Francis on Monday denounced the religious fundamentalism that inspired the Paris massacres and ongoing Mideast conflicts, saying the attackers were enslaved by “deviant forms of religion” that used God as a mere ideological pretext to perpetuate mass killings.

In his annual foreign policy address to Vatican-based ambassadors, Francis called for a unanimous response from the international community to end “fundamentalist terrorism” in the Mideast. And he called for Muslim leaders in particular to condemn “extremist interpretations” of their faith that seek to justify such violence.

The leader of the 1.2-billion strong Catholic Church has stepped up his call for Muslim political, religious and intellectual leaders to vocally insist that Islam doesn’t condone such violence. Francis said the Paris attacks were the result of a “throwaway culture” in which human beings and even God are rejected outright. Referring to the “tragic slayings” in Paris, Francis said those responsible had become “enslaved” by new fads and “deviant forms of religion.”

“Religious fundamentalism, even before it eliminates human beings by perpetrating horrendous killings, eliminates God himself, turning him into a mere ideological pretext,” he said.

Go here to read the rest. One of the problems with this analysis is that the punishment of death for blasphemy is very much a mainstream Islamic belief, sanctified by passages in the Koran, and has a long history in the Islamic world. It is no doubt useful to the Pope to pretend otherwise, but it is not accurate.

Koran-5.33. The recompense of those who fight against God and His Messenger, and hasten about the earth causing disorder and corruption: they shall (according to the nature of their crime) either be executed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off alternately, or be banished from the land. Such is their disgrace in the world, and for them is a mighty punishment in the Hereafter.

Pope Francis’ comments against “fundamentalists” will resonate with secular liberals in the West, but will fall flat with muslims who are actually familiar with their faith and its history.

....”99% of the Religion Forum is from Catholics posting articles about the Catholic faith. And of course if these articles are not labeled Caucus they are immediately attacked by the usual suspects.”.....

Most are spam anyway as it’s slathered all over FR. But you know those who do so could always stop doing so, then you wouldn’t have a problem with those who oppose catholicism.

1. The deity of Christ

2. The virgin birth

3. The inerrancy of Scripture

4. The blood atonement

5. The Resurrection

Catholics and the left have long used "fundamentalist" as a catch word. Usually its the evil Protestants that are "fundamentalist."

In reality, the Catholic Church accepts every one of the five characteristics of "fundamentalist." I've long recognized that by that definition we Catholics are fundamentalists, too.

Whoever came up with the idea that any man other than Jesus Christ is “Holy” and a “Father” no less would have been outed today as a cult leader by the Body of Christ.

...”Written by a doctor in the Catholic church...See where all those fancy degrees and great education will get you?”....

Just as with Islam..the deeper you go the more bound and insane one becomes. Their inability to see the obvious, let alone discuss them, goes out the door. They are in the dark leading others who are also willfully blind....right off the cliff!

Written by a doctor in the Catholic church.

See where all those fancy degrees and great education will get you?

Just having fancy degrees and great education, does not guarantee one has the common sense to come in out of the rain.

Pope Innocent III and Lateran Council IV: "One indeed is the universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved, in which the priest himself is the sacrifice, Jesus Christ, whose body and blood are truly contained in the sacrament of the altar under the species of bread and wine; the bread (changed) into His body by the divine power of transubstantiation, and the wine into the blood, so that to accomplish the mystery of unity we ourselves receive from His (nature) what He Himself received from ours." — Pope Innocent III and Lateran Council IV (A.D. 1215) [considered infallible by some]

For me, this one takes the cake...Apparently there are Catholic priests here on FR who stand up in front of the sheeple and tell them that they are Jesus Christ, in the flesh...

We know where they get that from and it's not God...

2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Won't they have fun when they bow before the 'real' Jesus Christ...

When I read that, I did a double take as well.

I think it’s so poorly written that they didn’t make clear that it is Jesus who is the priest and offers Himself as the sacrifice.

But considering how Catholics will take some weird thing and run with it, I’m surprised they haven’t already.

TD Jakes and Ted Haggard are not the leaders of any denomination. Haggard is a disgraced homosexual that needs to quit preaching and Jakes is pastor at a mega church. I said show me where I had put down leaders of a particular denomination. The others you mentioned were mass murderers.

Can sure tell fallen away Catholics. Some know the words of all the popes so well. Thanks. I’ll copy and paste your post. Keep up the good work. You did learn something as a Catholic. By the way there is no salvation outside the
church, as in Catholic Church. Of all people on FR you know this.

Luther’s off-spring and Islam were founded for the same reason? To tear down and destroy God’s One, True, Church. You’re in good company.

“Even if the Pope were Satan incarnate, we ought not to raise up our heads against him, but calmly lie down to rest on his bosom... He who rebels against our Father is condemned to death, for that which we do to him we do to Christ: we honor Christ if we honor the Pope; we dishonor Christ if we dishonor the Pope.”

[St, Catherine of Siena, SCS p 201-202, p222 (quoted in Apostolic Digest, by Michael Matauc, Book 5, “The Book of Obedience”, Chapter 1]

WOW!

Looks like a BUNCH of our FR Catholics are in TROUBLE!!!

It suggests that the original form is a true and good religion and the deviant forms are what is false and evil.

Catholic teaching is that all false religions are just that....false. The only true religion is the Catholic religion.

And yet...

1 Timothy 4:1    Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

Now the Spirit manifestly saith, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error, and doctrines of devils,

Revelation 1:4-6, 11,

John to the seven churches which are in Asia. Grace be unto you and peace from him that is, and that was, and that is to come, and from the seven spirits which are before his throne,

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth, who hath loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

And hath made us a kingdom, and priests to God and his Father, to him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.

11 Saying: What thou seest, write in a book, and send to the seven churches which are in Asia, to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to  Pergamus, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to  Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

(Read the 2nd and 3rd chapters to see what ERROR these 'CATHOLIC CHURCHES' were involved in.)

Do you REALLY believe this; in light of what LEARNED CAtholics have said?

Why should anyone believe you over them?

To tear down and destroy God’s One, True, Church.

Who 'tore down' YOUR chosen religion's churches mentioned by John in his revelation?

Who was teaching ERROR in them?

Who 'poorly catechized' them?

Mohamed or Luther?
