PopeWatch: Deviant Forms of Religion

“Those who annoy Allah and His Messenger – Allah has cursed them in this World and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating Punishment. Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City, desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time: They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain (without mercy).”

— Quran 33:57–61

Pope Francis believes that he understands what motivated the terrorists who slew twelve in Paris last week:

Pope Francis on Monday denounced the religious fundamentalism that inspired the Paris massacres and ongoing Mideast conflicts, saying the attackers were enslaved by “deviant forms of religion” that used God as a mere ideological pretext to perpetuate mass killings.

In his annual foreign policy address to Vatican-based ambassadors, Francis called for a unanimous response from the international community to end “fundamentalist terrorism” in the Mideast. And he called for Muslim leaders in particular to condemn “extremist interpretations” of their faith that seek to justify such violence.

The leader of the 1.2-billion strong Catholic Church has stepped up his call for Muslim political, religious and intellectual leaders to vocally insist that Islam doesn’t condone such violence. Francis said the Paris attacks were the result of a “throwaway culture” in which human beings and even God are rejected outright. Referring to the “tragic slayings” in Paris, Francis said those responsible had become “enslaved” by new fads and “deviant forms of religion.”

“Religious fundamentalism, even before it eliminates human beings by perpetrating horrendous killings, eliminates God himself, turning him into a mere ideological pretext,” he said.

Go here to read the rest. One of the problems with this analysis is that the punishment of death for blasphemy is very much a mainstream Islamic belief, sanctified by passages in the Koran, and has a long history in the Islamic world. It is no doubt useful to the Pope to pretend otherwise, but it is not accurate.

Koran-5.33. The recompense of those who fight against God and His Messenger, and hasten about the earth causing disorder and corruption: they shall (according to the nature of their crime) either be executed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off alternately, or be banished from the land. Such is their disgrace in the world, and for them is a mighty punishment in the Hereafter.

Pope Francis’ comments against “fundamentalists” will resonate with secular liberals in the West, but will fall flat with muslims who are actually familiar with their faith and its history.

Proof positive that Francis is totally ignorant of the teachings of the Koran. I've also read where he has said "all faiths have fundamentalists" that do bad things in the name of the Lord. He seems to not understand the major difference in Islam and Christianity. One was founded on love and the other on force and submission (or you die).

I don't spend a lot of time following popes but this one does seem ignorant beyond the realm of acceptability in a high official... or for that matter, in a human being.

Christian Fundamentalists simply adhere to the five fundamentals of Christianity as described in Scripture:

1. The deity of Christ
2. The virgin birth
3. The inerrancy of Scripture
4. The blood atonement
5. The Resurrection

Where is the command to murder the infidels, Frank? What a joke.

Since religion is the Pope's business, is it possible he has never read the Koran and Hadiths?

Since when is it an "extremist interpretation" of Islam to follow it as written in the Koran and Hadiths? -Tom

There sure seems to be a lot of FR folks who don't like this pope. Are any Freepers pro-Pope Francis? I'm neutral (not a Catholic) but he seems nice enough. I do like his efforts to focus on the poor. I read a story in our local newspaper how the bishop in our area lives alone in a three story mansion in the nicest area. That seems extravagant.

There are people on here that will post anything that says Catholic or Francis. I am beginning to think most don't even bother to read what they post.

There is a treasure trove of information available, but here you get blogs and "news" sources that would be laughed off in any other forum on Free Republic.

What gave that away?/s

It’s common knowledge that he is a fascist sympathizer
and part of the homosexual agenda trying to compromise
with the word of God on homosexual marriage and priesthood.

Francis is a leftist that is trying his damnest to change church doctrine on moral issues that have been decided for the last couple thousand years. I like to expose his goals any chance I get and it seems the only people that call him out are Catholics that believe in their faith and trying to live the faith.

Go ahead and keep on with it. It's all fine. I was just pointing out that people are posting stuff that they do not vet and from blogs and various other sources that would normally be laughed off in serious places. OK? So what?

Likewise ... for the simple reason that >90% of what I "know" about Pope Francis comes through the evil satan-worshipers in Big Media.

I don't trust them to tell the truth. Quite the contrary, in fact. They lie about 0bama, mohammedans, abortion, gun control, gun owners, taxes, government spending, the environment, the military, Clinton (either one), Bush (either one) ... in fact, regarding anything that I have any sort of personal or professional expertise on ... Big Media reporting is reliably screwed up beyond recognition.

And I'm supposed to trust them when they report on something I know less about, like the Pope????

Hell NO!

He’s going to set up the Vatican for Islamic attacks. Jihadists won’t tolerate the Pope messing with and revising their religion.

The whole idea of a Pope naming himself as the global religion reformer/leader for the global unification of religion, is dangerous for Christianity. He is either ignorant of what Islam is or he’s evil for trying to roll up Christianity into that religion and all the other religions of the globe.

Exactly, fundamental and discrimination - both words over used and misunderstood or perhaps twisted to suit a particular agenda.

Thank You, that is my point. All objectivity goes out the window around here when Pope Francis or Catholic is mentioned. I have not yet figured Francis out yet. But from the sounds of things he's just to the left of Satan. It's stunning really.

Of course this is the same reason the next President of the United States will probably be Elizabeth Warren or some equal nitwit. But by all means lets worry about the Pope.

ROTFL! Anyone else who calls a pope out for leftist politics is shouted down as a "virulent anti-Catholic". He's all yours.

To paraphrase an alleged statement by one of your earlier popes, "Since God has given your church this papacy, you'd better learn to enjoy it."

"Fundamentalist" a word

over used and misunderstood or perhaps twisted to suit a particular agenda.

I'll say. Catholics and the left have long used "fundamentalist" as a catch word. Usually its the evil Protestants that are "fundamentalist."

It’s interesting the way socialists approach theological concepts but when it comes to Islam they are not the only ones who refuse to approach the issue. That even includes leading Christian clergy including Pope Francis.

Followers of Mohammed not only claim, but truly believe that God has authorized them to kill those who refuse to submit to their version of God’s will. That is a basic tenet of that religion. A claim which goes unchallanged. While it’s understandable for atheists which most socialists are, not to approach that claim on a theological basis. It’s bewildering why any Christian clergy refuse to admit it even exists and is a basic part of Islam creed and worse yet are unable to condem it.

The Koran and its enforcement of sharia law is a pseudo religious concoction using monotheistic selected texts taken and misconstrued from the new and old testaments. Both of which cite the Almighty has granted free will to accept or obey his laws and is the final judge not man. Sodom and Gahmora is a glaring example.

Yet followers of Mohammed under the severest of penalties are forbidden to read either which would refute that assertion in a creed which institutionalizes disgusting arab tribal views, observances, and customs. Claiming adhearants are authorized by our Creator to demand submission to it or suffer an ignominious death administered by followers of Islam.
