Pope Francis: Judas was a sinner, but no worse than anyone elseelse
The Washinton Post ^ | October 29 2014 | Josephine Mckenna

Pope Francis says Judas Iscariot was not the only sinner among the Twelve Apostles but he was the one who “closed himself to love.”

In a homily during his morning Mass at the Vatican on Tuesday (Oct. 28), the pope spoke of the universality of sin while encouraging the faithful to fully immerse themselves in the Catholic Church and not simply stand on the threshold of their faith.

Francis has referred to the role of Judas several times since becoming pope in 2013. In May last year, he said that Judas had stood apart “in his solitude” and his selfishness grew to the point where he betrayed Jesus.

I guess you and the Washington Post are entitled to write the news the way you want it.

Judas did show regret at least. Monsters such as Mao, Stalin, and Hitler did not. And BTW, neither does 0bama.

“Francis has referred to the role of Judas several times since becoming pope in 2013.”

Birds of a feather and all that.

Are we supposed to be shocked by the idea that all the Apostles were sinners? Aren’t we all sinners? I certainly am.

Doesn’t the Church distinguish between venial and mortal sins?

Yes, he is. For some reason, a lot of people seem to be upset about that.

I’m really confused by this one. Aren’t we always being told that it’s impossible that the Virgin Mary was sinless, because “All have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory,” and “All our righteous deeds are as filthy rags.”?

But now we’re supposed to be shocked, SHOCKED! that the Pope observed that all the Apostles were sinners.

I don’t think anyone would be shocked by that

That's a good point. I wonder if he had asked Jesus for forgiveness if he would have been forgiven.

Before the fact, Jesus said it would be better had that man never been born which wasn't said about anyone else; however, those who said he was casting out demons by the power of Satan, Jesus said that they had committed the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit, the only one that could never be forgiven. That's all I can think of Jesus said applying to people of his time; the rest was usually in parables..

So whether the pope said what they say he said, that is what scripture says Jesus said.

I thought of one more; Jesus said of those who harmed little children who believed in Him it would be better if they had a millstone tied around them and thrown into the sea.

There is lots more about sin spoken by the Apostles and also I think Jesus in John's vision in Revelation.

“Closed himself to love.”?

That does not seem a tad watered down to anyone.

He betrayed the Son of God. For 30 pieces of silver he not only rejected atonement for himself, but did not care if the rest of the world ended up hopelessly lost as a result. His later regret was not repentance, evidenced by his suicide.

What a strange way for the pope to encourage people to be more loyal to the church.

Judas rejected the one who was here to atone for his sins. He refused to accept the Lordship of Jesus. He was a fake and a phony, pretending allegiance while plotting against Him.

After writing the above I get it now. The pope is calling all those who leave the church or disagree with it JUDAS. He is equating the catholic church with Christ Himself. That is what it looks like to me.

Beware of elevating yourself too much.

It’s often quite difficult to know what to make of what this pope has to say. Some of this is certainly attributable to translation issues, and some, I’m sure, the intentional twisting of his words and phrases by the media. But the fact that he never makes any ever to clarify some of the more disturbing reports is, at best, disconcerting. This Washington Post story is typical.

Pope Francis seems to be suggesting that all sins and all sinners are equal. He can’t possibly mean that, since that is not the teaching of the Church. The Church teaches us that where all sin offends God, some sin (mortal sin) is much greater. We are also told in the Scriptures that four (and only four) specific sins are so offensive that they cry out to heaven for vengeance.

But acknowledging that we are all sinners (including all of the Apostles), there is only one person that walked the face of this earth that Jesus Christ said: “The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed: it were better for him, if that man had not been born”. The man he was speaking about was Judas Iscariot.

Either Pope Francis is distorting this man’s history, or he is again being misquoted or mistranslated.

“Judas was not the one who sinned the most: I don’t know who sinned the most ... Judas, poor man, is the one who closed himself to love and that is why he became a traitor. "

You know what's not obvious: How can Francis know Judas was not the one who sinned the most, yet he says he doesn't know who sinned the most.

It's very rare to see a man contradict himself in the same sentence. Only other ones I can think of are Biden and Obama. Oh, and Pelosi!
