In Evans’ case, that’s where the Seattle Times comes in. For anyone who wants to know the measure of the man, the Times did an excellent job recently of summing up a storied life and career in the service of his fellow citizens that now appears more like a memory from yesteryear rather than a reflection of Republicans in politics today. Of course, there are some good ones out there at every level of government, but over the course of my lifetime I have seen the overall quality of Republicans elected to state and national office decline. And just to...

CNN — The National Transportation Safety Board is issuing “urgent safety recommendations” for some Boeing 737s—including the embattled 737 MAX line— warning that critical flight controls could jam. The independent investigative agency is issuing the warning that an actuator attached to the rudder on some 737 NG and 737 MAX airplanes could fail. The move comes after the NTSB investigated a February incident where the pilots of a United Airlines MAX 8 landing in Newark reported their rudder pedals “stuck” in the neutral position. The warning is the latest black eye for Boeing. The company has seen a string of...

Progressive Democrats introduced a bill to restore U.S. funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, months after the U.S. banned funding for one year over allegations some of their employees were involved in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. That measure received widespread support in Congress, with Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York emphasizing the “incestuous relationship between UNRWA and Hamas,” saying the U.S. must stop funding “institutions that perpetuate hate, that perpetuate the radicalization that ultimately led to October 7th.” In addition to the dozen staff members who were directly involved in the attacks, the Israel...

When thousands of Boeing employees rejected a new labor contract, precipitating a strike that began Friday, they were at odds not just with management but also with the leaders of their union, who backed the proposed deal. Now, any attempt to reach an agreement must take account of the demands of the rank and file of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. What they want — significantly larger pay raises and far more lucrative retirement benefits than their leaders and Boeing agreed to — may be too much for management. But labor experts said the strength of the...
