Agitprop in action? [Was U.S. SARS Outbreak? Vallejo, California]

Edited on 05/26/2003 7:06:24 AM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

Admin moderator here. If you are interested in seeing the original article, hit the history link above. However, I wanted to put here some information that I think is more interesting. I will be adding to it as I pull some more information together. Please stand by.

Thanks, AM

Update 1:

The original article was posted on Sierra Times at this location: http://www.sierratimes.com/03/05/20/ar_sara_worden.htm.

Update 2:

We recieved an abuse report that said the following:
It is a bogus story. Sierra Times did not validate its sources. Astraea Kelly is a communist labor organizer and is using a blog on Rense.com to try to unionize part-time employees at Kaiser-Permanente in Vallejo.
. So far, I have found enough to think the complaint is valid.

Update 3:

I decided to do some Googling.

Update 4:

Some more from Google:

Update 5:

I just want to add a little commentary. I think that trying to exploit an illness for any purpose is just plain sick. These people are beyond contempt. And to do it by trying to cause fear and loathing in others is fascist. Of course, these whackjobs are the first to tell everyone that conservatives are racist, yet here they are spreading agitprop deliberately trying to exploit people's fears and encouraging a backlash against an ethnic group.

Update 6:

Please see the posts by D. Brian Carter and CobaltBlue on this thread. If I left anyone else out who deserves credit, it was unintentional.

Update 7:

We can see that her more recent efforts have all been regarding exploiting the fear of SARS. Google search.

Update 8:

As was pointed out on the thread, one of the earliest people pushing this on FR was a user called Watchman123. Please refer to this thread. We had a heads up about the AFL-CIO doing some SARS fearmongering, and we looked at Watchman123 a little closer. What I found was someone who had signed up January, 1999 but pretty much had not posted at all- until recently. This is another example of what we call 'Sleeper' accounts. Four years. Sick.

Update 9:

I thought it might be fun to look at some other of Watchman123's posts. When Jim nuked the account, they were pulled (on the thread above I restored his comments), but he or she posted a few vanities as well. For giggles, let's see what she or he was peddling. Shall we?

There is a report of patterns Of SARS-Like Illnesses at a major Northern CA Hospital from a respiratory therapist who works there. I just finished calling this hospital, and I can tell the hospital is not telling and very nervous. One of the managers replied when I told him I suspect they have a crises of SARS-like illnesses, ”Sorry. We cannot say anything about it. It is confidential. “ When I mentioned the name of this medical staff and that I have read her plea for outside help as she is not allowed to say anything, his response is,” I can’t comment on it..." Update 10:

Is SARS an overblown hysteria? -- Pros and cons
self | 5-8-03 | Watchman123

Posted on 05/08/2003 12:27 PM EDT by Watchman123

Let’s get the right, balanced perspective on SARS. The New York Times has printed over 300 articles on SARS in the last 30 days. University of Toronto Medical historian Edward Shorter calls SARS "A media-fanned wave of mass hysteria,” Are we overstating the seriousness or are we being rational?

Update 11:

Why America maybe overconfident about SARS ^
Posted by Watchman123 On News/Activism ^ 05/05/2003 11:27 PM EDT with 26 comments

self | 5/5/03 | Watchman123

I see two extremes in our attitude towards Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). While some are overreacting, others look at our 0 death rate, great health care, and they are yawning. There needs to be a balanced mentality. The SARS here appears to be the mild type. It might mutate someday. SARS so far seemed to have largely bypassed the U.S...All it takes is one superspreader...and all hell can break loose!

Update 12:

Just for the record, Watchman123 had posted 22 articles and 113 replies since signing up. Almost all of them were in the past few weeks, all but one or two about SARS. Funny that.

Update 13:

I am not, by the way, suggesting that Watchman123 is this Astraea Kelly person. I am pretty sure that is not the case. What I am confident of is, intentionally or not, he was carrying Astraea's water.

Update 14:

TaxRelief found a wonderfully revealing quote from the past.
To: hellinahandcart

This is one of Kelly's most revealing rants:

>>> I don't remember whether I got an RFK autograph or just a
>>> handshake when I was a kid and he was campaigning near South Bedford-
>>> Stuyvesant, Brooklyn (where I raised).
>>> I do remember that as I became politicized the political myths

>>> in own right. "That['s what] we have learned now...."!!
>>> While one may debate whether it was RFK's being adamantly pro-
>>> Zionist in speeches and actions that (allegedly) motivated Sirhan B.
>>> Sirhan to fire his fatal shot(s) at RFK, the numbers of people
>>> murdered as a result of RFK's decisions far exceeds just one -- think
>>> about the lynchings / beatings in those times of those who were
>>> (mistakenly or correctly) identified as civil rights activists.
>>> Amazing how political amnesia works as a pill for those who need
>>> something to rationalize supporting / campaigning for the next
>>> liberal who comes down the pike: The witch-hunter extraordinaire, co-

Update 15:

I noted the following:
To: TaxRelief

Now for a moment, back to Watchman123. I found one of his earliest posts, long before his account became suddenly active within the past few weeks. Someone put a thread up along the lines of "What are your favorite websites". Watchman123 posted a link to a site calling it a "great political site". It was someone's geocities site. I kinda liked the disclaimer at the bottom of it:

Heads up everyone! The Bay Area has a HUGE illegal Asian immigrant population!

This has not hit SF Chron yet because it's un-pc, I'm sure, but I live in the Bay Area (open borders land) and I'm freaked!

I've seen this same "SARS in Vallejo" story from other sources that I don't consider to be highly reliable. However, Sierra Times is a source that I do give some credence to. If SARS is raging in China then it is virtually certain that SARS will be raging in the Bay Area as well, since the population of the Bay Area is largely Asian now.

Sierra Times, eh? The same crew that once claimed that Tennessee state troopers trained automatic weapons on the crowd at an anti-tax protest rally. I'd sooner believe a Debka article claiming that the sun was going to rise in the West tomorrow.

I've been reading similar reports by respiratory therapists recently - some really bad pneumonia that's killing a lot of elderly people.

Could be SARS, could be something else, could be we are all hyperaware right now so notice every little thing that we used to ignore.

Apparently, the Astraea Kelly person has some credibility issues. She is some type of left wing labor organizer. This story has been going around here for about three weeks. I haven't seen anything to refute or substansiate the claims.

However, here is a link from Wednesday that is somewhat related. Check it out.

The one you linked to seems to be a real and believable story. But I'd not believe Astraea without strong substantiation, and by this time we should have had that from other sources in the area.

Any stats on what "a lot of elderly people" means?

'Any stats on what "a lot of elderly people" means?'

This could be the result of confusion with a recent story about a fairly nasty gastrointestinal disease making the rounds in a nursing home in the San Francisco bay area.

Not like any true Free Republic writer would ever get any facts confused or wrong, of course.

It wouldn't surprise me if it started here in the USA in just this way. Hospitals will do whatever they can to prevent a panic, they need the employees to show up for work and of course the other patients. They aren't going to broadcast there could be SARS --not even after they have proof.

Me neither ---but the other sources might be reluctant to come forward. Until there is confirmation ---and how many people would really have access to the diagnosis? The diagnosis can be pneumonia ---it may not directly say "SARS" in anything people are going to see.
