289 Million Americans Avoid Peace Rallies
(2003-01-19) -- Police across the nation estimate the crowd that avoided yesterday's anti-war demonstrations at about 289 million. Americans from coast-to-coast voted in absentia against criticizing the Bush administration for Iraq's failure to comply with U.N. resolutions.
Anti-anti-war demonstrators gathered in grocery stores, shopping malls and private homes to proclaim their disagreement with protestors marching in the streets of Washington D.C. and San Francisco.
"Going about my regular Saturday routine is my way of saying I disagree with the radical left-wing agenda of the anti-Bush crowd," said college student Melanie Sampson, who spent the day preparing a term paper for a literature course.
Police reported no unusual problems with the droves that stayed away from the protests.
"It was a normal Saturday in America," said one Sheriff's deputy.

I was a memeber of the 289 million Americans who didn't go to protest against our country, our president, or our military.

A few weeks back, before the California tree-sitter was removed from his perch in his precious oak tree, there was a protest in Orange County at the headquarters of the builder trying to remove the tree. Four people showed up. There were almost 30 reporters and cameras from local media covering the less than a handfull of tree huggers. Over 20,000,000 people within a two hour drive did not show up.

I just heard from a caller/protester on NPR say there were 400,000 who protested in DC. Seems like a big exaggeration by a Loser... anybody know the real number?

THIS is the kind of news I've been aching to see reported!!!! I want to see more average Joes like me giving their opinion, rather than the media always giving voice to the most extreme ideas.

I remember that one! I was living in LA and John & Ken of KFI am [640am] interviewed the tree sitter on their show. It was a riot. Actress Rene Russo came to the protest. I think MOST of the protestors came to see HER and NOT to protest. She said she grew up in a treeless neighborhood.... So that makes her qualified to stop someone else from cutting down their own tree? Things are bad in San Marino, LA county for property owners. I knew a gal who had to get permission from the city to cut down her Avocado tree in her own backyard, and she was not allowed to cut down the oak tree. Sure the trees were big and pretty and old, but they took up her WHOLE YARD! She moved!

I led a massive "do some laundry, clean up the house, and microwave a burrito" rally. Crowd estimates ranged from one to one.

I just don't understand why they don't go to Cuba where everyone is equal, they have health care, and not a worry in the world. Don't have to worry about war there. If they don't want to do that, then they should shut the hell up.

You could post the same headline for anyone holding a pro-administration rally, too.

My rally was pretty much the same except I had soup and washed my SUV.

289 Million Americans Avoid Peace Rallies Perhaps that is indicative of America's view that peace without a good reason is just as horrendous a miscalculation as war without sufficient reason.

I don't believe these numbers. I need an aerial photograph in order to determine if 289 million Americans really stayed away.

Great post!

I went to the grocery store and stood in line with hundreds of others to protest long lines - where were the cameras?
