TOM'S RIVER, New Jersey (CNN) -- A teen-ager was sentenced Friday to life in prison for carjacking and killing a teacher, who managed to record secretly the attack and her desperate pleas to be spared.

Michael LaSane, 17, will not be eligible for parole for 30 years. He pleaded January 27 to felony murder in the death of Kathleen Weinstein, 45.

I truly feel sorry for the teacher and her family; however, I must say, that if NJ had a more practical conceal and carry law and she had a gun, the circumstances may have been much, much different. Sure some will say she would have died anyway. I think circumstances would have been different. I don't think trying to psychoanalyze thugs is prudent in a violent criminal act and in that situation. She should have said, "Smith and Wesson will free me?"

"In the second half of this chilling tape, Kathleen Weinstein continued her efforts to influence or touch her assailant in human terms while offering help, counsel and advice," he said.

"She discussed self-respect, prayer, God, goals, fear and her assailant's future. She asked about and talked about religion and church. She expressed her fear and at one point is clearly crying,"

I think I saw a take-off on this crime on Law & Order a couple of years ago.

I believe she used the preferred method of dealing with killers per the Brady Bunch, that is to talk reasonably with the perp. Problem is, it didn't work.

Too bad she didn't have a 45. Would've been a different story.

Get a CCW and carry a gun. Or at least carry the gun- if I am on your jury after you have to use it, you will go free!

The femanists who excuse the rapes of our former president are adamant about not letting women and the elderly ..carry concealed...regardless of how many rapes and murders

Any woman who had the presence of mind...to record the conversation and then turn the tape over and record more...had a lot of courage..

She faced a fully grown young man with a gun...the proto bully...and coward...if the great nanny state would only let us sheep protect ourselves from these animals... (whose numbers are growing)...

Hey NOW where is your outrage...too busy awardeding your gun grabbing rapist helpers?

An audio tape expert discovered this week that Kathleen Weinstein flipped the tape over and recorded an additional 22 minutes,

This required an expert???

To all the moderates in NJ and elsewhere, here is one example why I hate it when NJ candidates and politicians won't talk about the conceal and carry issue. End result--defenseless People are murdered.

New Jersey doesn't have a death penalty either? Man, glad I live in VA. But, really how can it be this creep ain't getting capital punishment for strangling a woman that begged for her life for 45 minutes. I mean, this is CLEARLY premeditated murder.

I know this is easier said than done, but if you ever find yourself in this situation, it's better to try to fight off the perpetrator by hitting him upside his nose, poking his eyes, etc. Once you drive somewhere with a carjacker, he will probably kill you, because now it becomes kidnapping, and he has a better chance with you dead.

Guess what? New Jersey DOES have a death penalty!

They NEVER use it! If this piece of scum doesn't deserve the needle, then who does?!?

Anyone who says the NJ Supreme Court is 'Republicans' appointed by a 'Republican Governor - Cristy Todd Whitman' needs a reality check.

The NJ Supremes are RINO's appointed by a RINO mentally deranged Governor.

This is why RINO's must be eliminated, IMHO. They are just as dangerous as the left.

So much for the "no resitance" school of thought. "talk to the criminal, make him see you as a human...." BAH ! Criminals don't care, but they do care about not being killed. Resistance, preferably armed resistance, will keep you alive much more often than being passive. Send 'em packing, and if they want to push the issue, give 'em 2 in the 10 ring and a toe tag! To bad this never made the national news, but that would be bad press for the "anti gun / have you hugged your criminal today" crowd.

Well, actually we do. It was liberal republican Governor Tom Kean (Doug Forrester's Campaign Manager)who signed the legislation into law about 15 years ago. The only problem is that he put so many restrictions on it, it takes about 10 years' worth of appeals and millions of dollars in order for him to be put on death row. We have about 20 or 30 on death row and not one has yet to be executed.

Oh, and no grandfather clause, that's why cop killer Tom Trantino was let go.

17 year olds don't have brains, just a stem that develops, maybe at about 23.

Yes, you are right. I've often heard by experts on talk shows, like Bo Dietel and John Walsh, who state that a victim should never go or leave with the perp. onto his Turf. Fight now and there or pay later.

Too bad she didn't have a small pistol in her pocket instead of a tape recorder.

Gun grabbers would rather see women like her terrorized and strangled to death than give them the choice (choice! there's that word the libs love so much!) to defend themselves with a firearm.

Yep, you're right on that one, I've used the reference age of 24 in the past so we are close.

I would never try to negotiate with an attacker. Once you've decided to attack me, you better hope your ass is invulnerable to .45 hollowpoint. FL has concealed carry, and I use it.

I can't imagine living in a state that forced me to be utterly defenseless.
