Your Tax Dollars at Work! (24th Annual Blacks in Government Conference)
BIG ^ | Me

Posted on 08/21/2002 7:04:35 PM PDT by FireTrack

Each year thousands of Black Civil Service Employees travel to Atlanta to attend the Blacks in Government (BIG) National Conference. These all expense paid junkets even force the agency to pay the $525.00 attendance fee.

Blacks In Government was conceived by DHEW Black Federal employees at the Parklawn Building in Rockville, Maryland. The organization was viewed as essential to the Black civil service employee, based on a wide assortment of racially motivated problems faced by the HEW Black employees in Rockville. Initially, it was thought that the umbrella organization would address only the problems at the Federal level. However, it was soon determined that State, County, and Municipal Black employees were faced with the same general type of employment problems.

When coupled with the fact that no single civil rights organization has as its sole objective the preservation and enhancement of Black civil servants, it became apparent that Black civil servants had to unite and protect themselves. To some, this meant jeopardizing their careers. To others, it meant duplicating some of the efforts of other organizations. To still others, it meant very little, they felt (as some Blacks do not) that it would be a wasted effort.

Nonetheless,Blacks In Government, was organized in 1975 and incorporated as a non-profit organization under the District of Columbia jurisdiction in 1976. BIG has been a national response to the need for African Americans in public service to organize around issues of mutual concern and use their collective strength to confront workplace and community issues. BIG's goals are to promote EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE in public service, and OPPORTUNITY for all Americans.

I heard something to the effect that one agency had spent thousands of dollars hiring black employees who were way over represented but had spent hardly anything in recruiting white employess who were hardly represented at all. Actually I think there is a lawsuit over it and the plantiff is using the government's own records.

I don't have a problem with black civil service workers organizing. If white workers did it they would proclaim us to be racist. Be that as it may, what pisses me off is the fact that they fund 99% of this BS using our tax dollars.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

BIG's goals are to promote EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE in public service, and OPPORTUNITY for all Americans.

Why then are only some Americans allowed to attend?

"Why then are only some Americans allowed to attend?"

Good Question! Of course one that you're not suppose to bring up or mention. I bet it haunts the attendees none the less.

Black America will never be equal until they answer these questions themselves and do what's right in insuring that everyone is included in events such as these or taking out the trash as they failed to do in the OJ Simpson Trial.

I'm not holding my breath but I do detect some change in attitude (i.e. The defeat of Cynthia McKinney and the Black Lady Judge in Florida who did what was right in the Presidential Elections). Hopefully black America will begin to realize what it truly takes to make a people great.

As victims of exclusion in the past, they should abhor and not condone it among themselves today!

(panther33 clears his throat and imitates a teacher voice)

"Okay, class, if you are surprised to find out that tax dollars are being wasted on special interests, raise your hand please."

(regular voice)

My point exactly.

Well I'm sure they had a BIG time in Atlanta this week. I wonder if our tax dollars were well spent?
